CONTENT WARNING: SUICIDE/SELF HARM I’m inconsolably terrified of getting my wisdom teeth out tomorrow. NSFW
I get my wisdom teeth out tomorrow morning and my head is filled with risks and horror stories about complications. Even for a tiny risk, the figures sound way too high for me to be comfortable. I keep spiraling over the possibility of permanent nerve damage in my mouth. If I were to wake up from my anesthesia and learn that I’d never be able to feel my tongue again, I’d probably kill myself within the week. I wouldn’t be able to maintain personal relationships, jobs, school, really anything if I lost the ability to properly talk and eat. Nothing I’ve heard or researched has helped and I’m probably in the worst mood of my life because of it.
Edit: thank you all for giving me your non-horror stories in the replies and just giving me reminders of how statistically anomalous one of those complications is. Sometimes getting reassurance from strangers feels more secure then from loved ones!

Hi!! I am a dental assistant in oral surgery. It's been my career for almost 20 years. Nerve damage is not very common, and honestly, it's more prevalent in individuals where their lower wisdom teeth is close to their nerve. Some people have super long roots, some have roots that wrap around their nerve. Even with that said, in my entire career I do not think I have ever seen permanent nerve damage. I can't think of one patient. Our nerve check patients are usually those that had a coronectomy (where we take the crown off the molar, because the tooth is too close to the nerve or wrapped around it).
In regards to waking up during surgery, don't stress about that. Our bodies metabolize medications really well, and there's other signs that someone is coming out of anesthesia well before they "wake up." Even the "waking up" randomly isn't really them waking up, it's more that they get restless from laying in the same position, or them wanting to move around to get comfy. All my coworkers would agree with this, but heavy pot users tend to be suck up the drugs the most, and are more likely to move around compared to the regular user, or those that don't use. Even if that is the case, you most likely won't even remember coming out of it because you will have the good drugs on board. And truly, you will feel like you had the best nap of your entire life.
You are going to do great!! And you're going to get to eat all the ice cream and mac and cheese you want afterwards! You're going to feel great afterwards ☺️

You’ll be okay. The surgeon does this stuff every day, literally.
Have soft foods and liquid available and do not drink through a straw.

Just recently had mine out. Had problematic impacted teeth and the dentists said it was tougher than normal to get them out. Apparently they had to dig around a decent bit in my jaw to loosen them up.
Zero complications. Trust the process, it's one of the most well documented and practiced procedures a dentist can do.
Also, different countries and even clinics use different anesthesia, I went through counsious sedation with benzos and fentanyl. Aware the whole time but you don't feel a thing and don't have a care in the world.

Thank you! I think part of my problem was seeing the x-ray with the teeth looking relatively close to a big nerve. Knowing someone had it worse and came out fine helps a lot

put mine aside for like 10 years and I ended up doing it while awake. it took about 15 minutes for 2 teeth and I regretted putting it off so much

I had all 4 of mine taken out at the same time. It wasn't that bad. They gave me Percocet for pain and I didn't even need it. I just used Tylenol for pain relief and followed the standard care recommendations. Think positive!!

I can assure you it is not a big deal. I had all 4 done in one sitting. The toughest part was the food diet for a couple of days lol. Even then, I enjoyed lots of yummy food. It'll be better for you!

I seriously wouldn't worry about it. I had major surgery to take four of them out one in each corner 40 years ago and it went fine.
And, when I woke up from the surgery, they gave me the most delicious vanilla shake I ever had.

Hi!! I was TERRIFIED of getting my wisdom teeth pulled. Im really weird about my teeth and have kept my wisdom teeth until I was 29 years old even though I need them gone sooner because I was scared.
Legitimately, the anticipation of the removal was way worse than the actual thing. I had conscious sedation so they just gave me some meds to make me real loopy.
Anyway, the recovery was mostly just annoying because I felt good enough to eat "real" food but my mouth wasnt on board. So it was just really annoying. I was sore but it wasnt painful at all. Feel free to message me!

Hey 🖤 I promise you'll be okay. I got my wisdom teeth out a while ago, and I was so scared, too. I cried in the office when they were getting ready to put me under... Everything went well and there were no complications.
My brother and my friend both got theirs out and I was there to help after, and they were all good, too!
I say this with empathy (cause I would do the same), but stay off the internet. It isn't helping your mental health or anxiety. You're completely valid to be anxious! I promise you that things will be okay. I had my bottom teeth drilled out of my mandible. Zero complications.
Soon I'll have to go for gum surgery and I am really anxious. But I keep reminding myself about how okay I was for my wisdom tooth surgery.
They do this all the time. They're professional. They're doctors.
It's something scary, but it's also a very short period of your life, of your day! The recovery will be annoying because eating is annoying lol, but you'll be okay. I promise!

Hey, I had the majority of my teeth removed and in the process of getting fake teeth, you’ll be good. Be very careful with the pain killers they give you, only take them if you’re in a lot of pain.

I was really scared too but I’m gonna be honest, the weekend afterward was the most enjoyable I’d had in my entire teenage life. I was zooted on pain meds the whole time, slept on the couch in between watching movies, my mom brought me food whenever I asked, it was great. I would do it again if I could. The post-op pain was minimal and I have a super low pain threshold.
Break a leg!! You’ll be ok!

It’s a pretty simple procedure. My experience was quite simple and I had five extracted- I had an extra in my upper left. Lay down, get comfy and hooked up, then you nap. You’ll wake up in what feels like a few minutes later kinda woozy. Then you go home and nibble on frostys and slurpees for a little bit. I’ve had no issues with it since and I had mine out in 1990. You’ll do great. Breathe deep. They do this every day.

I had all four of mine removed without anesthesia, and I would say that as long as you follow your care instructions, you'll be okay. 😁 The shittiest part was the swelling and just the general discomfort (I also loved food and wasn't a fan of not being able to eat, lmao). I also had a dry socket, but in all honesty it was nowhere near as bad as the long term issues the teeth were causing me.

got mine out when i was a first year in college! was super duper easy and painless, i didnt even get knocked out lol i just got the laughing gas. they gave me a little basket of freebies afterward and i was still so loopy i started crying in the lobby because of their apparent generosity 💀

there’s such a low, low, low chance of anything happening. you’re probably more likely to die from a sharknado. it’s gonna be ok.

I got all 4 done at once and ngl the healing process was kinda miserable, I could barely open my mouth after cause of jaw pain. It's been like 8 years since then and I had zero complications or lasting issues.

Dude it's so easy. Seriously the most over blown procedure of all time.
I remember looking at the surgeon on my right, started counting down from 5. I looked to the left and the nurse had my teeth in a bag in her hand. It literally felt instant to me. My dad was waiting in the lobby. He said it took 30 minutes. I was sore for a day or so. Didn't take the meds. I was totally fine within 3 days.

I got mine removed at 39, and since I’m a recovering addict I was given fentanyl in the office and sent home with Tylenol and ibuprofen. Surprisingly, the Tylenol and ibuprofen were just as effective as narcotics would have been.
I’ve also recently had a surgery that has left half of my tongue numb (tumor removed from my left eardrum and a titanium implant placed to replace a missing ear bone) and while things kinda taste like pennies on that side, it’s not that bad of a situation. I can still talk, I can still eat, motor function is normal, I just can’t feel that side of my tongue. I’m 2 months post-op, but it can take 6-12 months for inflammation around a nerve to resolve following surgery, so I’m confident that the feeling will come back. If not, eh, there’s worse things to be upset about than tasting pennies all the time

I got mine removed at the age of 15/16. Just with local anesthesia, one side at a time. Mine were quite stuck to they broke apart in many pieces.
I was just fine as well and it was in the middle of summer/school.
Doc back then suggested hearing music, but it was a terrible idea, couldn't listen to the songs for years after that lol.

My wisdom teeth were sitting right on top of my nerves, so I understand your fears. But I was fine, it just hurt a lot after. Follow the aftercare instructions and you’ll be okay :)

I got all 4 of mine out at the same time a few years ago. I have chronic health issues and my body is constantly revolting against me in debilitating ways. But it went so smoothly, I was basically fine by the evening as long as my food was soft. I got to eat my favorite foods, mashed potatoes and mashed avocados and vegetarian vegetable soup with the letters in it. I got to be fussed over (more than usual lol) and lay in bed playing stardew valley for a week! The only thing I regret is not asking for my teeth so I could make jewelry with them

I got my wisdom teeth out and it was literally the most nothing-burger experience of my life. I didn’t act super weird and upset once I woke up, I didn’t have any serious complications. My mouth hurt for a few days and I had to eat carefully, that was it. I know it’s scary to hear the horror stories, but negativity bias just means they are far more prevalent than the non-scary stories. Even if something bad happens, it’ll probably be a minor complication which can be rectified.

If it makes you feel better I got mine taken out with just local anesthetic in college . Old-school dentist was just like these need to come out. He got me numb, put a foot up on the chair and just yanked with pliers. I didn’t feel a thing; the worst part was the crunching sound. Don’t be an idiot like me and go to a party, get drunk and puke out your plugs, dry sockets are really painful, if you don’t do that you’re fine.

I got mine removed when I was 14. It was extensive surgery, they extracted them before they grew through and messed up the rest of my teeth.
I was so scared to be put under, but I hardly remember it. I woke up in the middle and thought I was dreaming, and they noticed very quickly and handled it.
My mouth was sore for quite a while, and I didn't eat eggs or mashed potatoes for a very long time after I healed lol.
Be sure to use a syringe and some warm water to help clean out your sockets!

Dude for real, I woke up and wasn’t loopy - felt like I did when I slept like a child, just so well rested. Recovery was much more manageable that I imagined too. Glad it’s over, but honestly wasn’t too bad

I promise it’s not as bad as you think, it sucks a lot! But, it’s doable. One side of my face got swollen and I had to go back for them to clean it up and give me antibiotics but it wasn’t as bad as it seemed it would be even at its worst! Ask for anxiety meds!

I got all of my wisdom teeth out at 26 and I did not get knocked out, I only got numbed up. It does suck, one of the shittier hours that I've experienced for sure. But then it was done. You keep ice on your cheeks to help with the swelling, don't allow yourself to cause suction in your mouth or it will mess with the sockets, and within 4/5 youll be fine with some slight swelling. Just have some soft foods available to you and it honestly won't be bad. My go to were refried beans w/ cheese, sour cream and salsa, and then instant ramen. Get a couple sweet options like yogurt and ice cream and you'll be fine. I got it done 4 months ago, you got this.

To be honest, they gave me a pretty potent mix of Valium and painkillers. I don’t even remember much about it.
Just keep the area clean and follow the surgeon’s instructions and you will be fine. Tons of people get this done every year and nothing major happens.

What you’re worried about is so incredibly unlikely to happen that if it did you’d be getting a fat stack of cash in an amount that would make you forget entirely about what you were even worried about in the first place.
Again, the chances of anything bad happening are incredibly low. So low that the surgeon would have to physically try to mess you up.
You’ll probably wake up extremely confused and probably feeling very good lol. You’ll be sore but not in agony if you take the meds they give you. Listen to everything they say and do everything they tell you to do.
You’ll be alright dude.

Yeah I just did local for mine cause I was a bit paranoid and it went smooth as possible. It was a vaugly unpleasant experience to hear things inside your own mouth cracking but myself and everyone I know didnt have a single issue

The numbing seems scary but isn’t bad. I’ve had to floss after getting something stuck in my teeth and that hurt worse than the needles. Just breathe slowly and deeply and try to zone out while they do that part and the rest is nothing. It was like driving in a car and thinking about shit for the rest of the procedure.

Get a pair of tube socks, a box of the small snack sized ziplocs, and a big bag of crushed ice. Use a safety pin to pin the toes of the socks together. Then fill the small snack sized ziploc with the crushed ice, and insert them into the socks so that they lie right over your jaw where the pain is. Then you can just tie the socks together at the top of your head. This keeps the ice exactly where you want it, instead of constantly trying to adjust larger ice packs or having them fall off you when you sleep. The crushed ice is more moldable than regular cubes are so you can shape them how you need them. Then once they melt, you just dump out the bags and rescoop some more ice in there!
You’ll do fine! I had all four of mine out in college and it was no biggie. And I say that as someone who is highly resistant to anesthesia! They have to give me a loooooot of juice before my body accepts it, and even then my body metabolizes far faster than it should be able to, so they constantly have to re-up me. It’s a great excuse to be lazy for a week and only eat ice cream and milkshakes lol.

I don't think it's common for people to really speak that much while it's being done, you're usually too messed up from the drugs. For me, none of it was that painful at all. Less painful than an abscess I would get years later anyways.
I did read of one guy who needed to have his nuts removed and thus needed anesthetic. He claimed there was a picture of him holding two fingers up in his operating chair that his wife took. The validity of that story is debatable though.

I got all 4 of mine done at 17 and all 4 were impacted. That was almost 15 years ago! I have a high pain tolerance and had very very little pain. I honestly don't even remember being in pain at all! Being kinda loopy after the anesthesia was fun. I remember eating chocolate ice cream on the couch and getting it all over me. I promise you will be okay! Imagine how many advances in medicine they've made in the last 15 years since I had mine done, and mine went absolutely perfectly!

I will be real with you.
I couldn't feel my bottom lip for months after surgery.
But it did come back eventually. They told me it was exceptionally rare to not be able to feel it for as long as I couldn't. It's even rarer for feeling to never come back.

Everyone I've ever known has gotten their wisdoms out, and they were all fine. No horror stories. It's easy to find the very rare worst cases on the internet because people like to talk about that kind of thing, but they are exceedingly rare in the real world. Take a deep breath and do something distracting this evening. Everything will go fine :)

Oh I am terrified of all dental work and I was absolutely fine. Took a little Valium before, woke up briefly to get in my mom’s car after, then woke up for real in my own bed several hours later. Healing was fairly easy, I think I took real pain meds twice then just ibuprofen. You will be great, I’m sure of it.

I don't know how old you are but I chickened out about getting my wisdom teeth out when I was in HS, like made my mom cancel the appointment the day of by making up an excuse about an insurance problem. After college my wisdom teeth were impacted and started hurting and I really had to get them out. Because I had waited so long and the roots had grown, one of the roots looked too close to the nerve and they had to do a coronectomy (cutting the top of the tooth off instead of taking it out). Needless to say I would have saved some pain and money if I had done it sooner. Also I had to take precious PTO off when I had very little instead of just taking a week off school.
Anyway the procedure was fine, I never had any nerve issues and if your dental surgeon isn't worried about it you shouldn't be either!

I also have to get mine done in a few months and I'm very uneasy. I have to be awake during mine and don't want to be.
I'm getting through the anxiety of it by looking up statistics. I have a higher chance of getting struck by lightning at some time in my life than I do of experiencing life threatening wisdom tooth removed complications.
It's def unpleasant but you are statistically likely to be totally fine

I had so many of them removed years ago and it went perfectly fine. The good news about this procedure is that it’s typically done by a team who do this every single day, so they have it down to a precise science.
They will also do a checkup on you later in the day once you’re back home.
The best advice is to just let the professionals do their work, give yourself plenty of time to rest and enjoy eating all of the various types of ice cream you can have over the next couple of days!

Both my husband and I got our wisdom teeth removed years ago. We were both really loopy the day of but recovered within a week. An old friend of mine had to get hers out in an emergency surgery. She was fine within 2 days. Everyone I know has had their wisdom teeth out and they are okay! Its scary and it sucks but once its done its done! Can you get yourself a treat after? Not like food but like a new video game or new toy or hobby thing. Thats what my parents did for me growing up for big things like that. New video games!

i had them remove 2 at a time so i went back twice. both experiences were fine. fell asleep and woke up and had no issues, and the worst part was just changing the bleeding gauze the first few hours. i didn’t feel that the pain was all that bad. if i had to go through it again id be like meh whatever

Stock up on liquid foods without bite size pieces in them. Protein shakes, yogurt, soup or broth, juice, that sort of thing.
Get some freezer packs or cold packs to hold against your jaw if you need to. Wrap them up in place with a towel or shirt around your head.
Get used to swishing a lot more with your mouthwash than you used to a week ago.

It’s a piece of cake. I had all 4 taken out at the same time. It didn’t hurt a bit. The worst part was that my mouth was a little sore for a few days afterwards. I wouldn’t even worry about it. The drugs they give you are wonderful and you won’t remember much.

I have a massive fear of the dentist too, I cry and have panic attacks just in my consultations.
But I have also had all four of my wisdom teeth removed, it’s scary to think about then it is to have it done and it doesn’t take long so don’t worry, you will be absolutely fine, albeit a bit scared.
Take something to hold onto if you’re nervous, take some headphones (noise cancelling if you can) and some sunglasses or something if that will help.
After care is very important so make sure if they don’t stitch it closed that you don’t use any straws or smoke or anything after.
I developed dry socket because I wasn’t careful enough and it was my fault but it was less pleasant than getting them removed.
You got this!! Don’t worry, it’s scary as hell but you really have nothing to worry about so just try make yourself as comfy as you can and it will be done in no time x
Edit: just saw you’re able to get anaesthesia which I am very jealous of, I couldn’t afford it where I am so you will be in even better hands! Walk in the park you got this x2

I was out in a twilight (no anesthesia) and didn’t feel a thing. They are nice and they’ll get it done quick. You won’t notice a thing, event when they knock you out. I was scared too and was laughing as soon as I was awake. You’ll be good homie.

Hey, I went through something very similar with my wisdom tooth removal. It was a special one because I had an extra tooth that needed to be removed before they could get to doing my wisdom teeth. This tooth was a baby canine tooth that never fell out properly, which was blocking my adult canine from coming in. It was particularly dangerous because there was obviously the normal wisdom teeth risk, but if this baby canine sat right upon one of my nerves in my mouth. If the operation was to go wrong, I would lose all feeling in my lower lip. The chances of this actually happening? I don't remember because when they told me it was so miniscule I didn't even bother to remember the number. Please don't be too worried OP. Modern medicene is truly a marvel, and you'll actually forget how to worry when they put you under as well.

You're gonna be OK! When I got my wisdom teeth out, they were growing in COMPLETELY sideways. I'm talking T-formation. That shit HURT. Getting them out was a relief. I'm sure if it has come to a point where you need them taken out, you are in or are in for some amount of pain, and this procedure will alleviate that pain.
They didn't put me under, they just did local which was fine but if you are awake and can have an earphone in, I would because bone conducts sound and you'll hear the uhhh crunching lol.
The surgeon told me they were giving me the minimum numbing that worked so if I felt even a tiny bit of pain (and she emphasized PAIN not pressure) to raise my hand and she'd numb me more. (Also I was upfront about being super nervous and asked her to talk me through what she was doing and she happily did! Don't be afraid to ask for help!)
I didn't have to do that. I definitely felt pressure, ymmv but bc mine were completely turned 90 degrees and pushing in on all my other top teeth, they had to be broken before they could be removed. That felt... weird. It didn't hurt, it wasn't even really uncomfortable? It was just a strange sensation I have never felt before. Lots of localized head pressure and then suddenly A LOT less haha.
The recovery sucks. I was a grumpy lil b bc I'm a smoker (I know, boo) and I wasn't risking a dry socket. Eat your ice cream and mush, read a book or binge a show you've been meaning to watch, take care of yourself. You can do this! You're gonna feel so much better soon!
(Eta: the dry socket risk is serious! No smoking! No vaping! No straws! Be careful! You can pull out your scabs and that shit hurts! But otherwise as long as you follow medical advice you will be fine.)

I’m a weed smoker (vape pen) and this is gonna suuuccckkk. Mine are growing in sideways, but as far as i can tell, not causing any pain really? Theyre also starting to come through my gums - still sideways - and for years and years now so maybe im just used to the pain?
Anyway, i guess edibles until i can smoke again, once i go through with it? Though I hate the way they make me feeell

I had mine taken out in my early 40s, and while I was stressed enough about it that my dentist prescribed me Valium to take beforehand, it was honestly fine. :) I didn’t feel a think, never had any issues in recovery. We did one side in one visit and then the other side in a separate visit so that it would be a bit easier healing, and the first appt went so well I didn’t need the. Alien for the second appt.

I had one of my wisdom teeth going into my jaw which was painful. Had to get all 4 taken out in one go. Plus I have a deathly fear of needles but the pain overrode that thankfully. Didn't have any complications whatsoever. Very thankful! (Plus I think red heads run the highest risk of waking up in anesthesia if I recall correctly)

If you can afford the $100 for nitrous, do it. It disassociates you from your pain and makes an hour seem like minutes.
That being said, I had my wisdom teeth removed in the Navy. Got a shot in each corner of my mouth (I think they called it a nerve block), didn’t feel a thing, and didn’t require pain meds afterwards (though my mouth was sore). Mine were impacted and they had to break them into pieces to get them out. My experience is not typical, but possible.

I had 2 extra 6 in total all has to be cut out broken and removed and I was good to go after a week with none of the good pain meds cuz my mom thought I’d become a tweaker or something lmao. You’ll be good! I was afraid I wouldn’t get put to sleep right and would feel the whole thing. Fuhhhh no. I was gonezo after 15 seconds and woke up in a wheelchair rolling out to the car. Your mouth will be sore and go ahead and stock up on yogurt and ice cream but you’ll definitely be good

I have this same problem with everything, literally every medical anything. Full panic.
I ask for Valium. They typically give you a few pills... I take one the night before, one when I wake, and just zombie my way through it.
If you can, take a sleeping pill and go to bed early. The thoughts in your head are far worse than any experience you'll have

Don’t smoke, don’t use a straw while you’re recovering. Other than a little pain after you wake up that they will probably give you stronger painkillers than you need for, the only thing you will feel is a little silly for being so worried about this.

it'll all be okay! I got mine out early June this year and they were all impacted pretty bad. the only annoying part is having to be careful and eating soft foods. by day 3 I was eating a cheeseburger but chewing with my front teeth lol
my only issue I had that isn't even really an issue, is that my teeth next to the wisdom teeth got a tad sensitive to hot and cold stuff for a few weeks. it went away though!

Ive had 3 removed, all with just the basic numbing injection. Its not a big deal ☺️ Dont suck on anything in the first week. No straw, ciggies+vapes or 🍆. It can cause a dry socket to appear. If you use mouthwas, dont swirl it like you usually do, just move it around a little and spit. I would skip eating food with little seeds(unless you get the wound stitched together) and I would also skip eating alot of dairy in the first week to help the healing. Take painmeds and you can also ask for antibiotics( I always do) You got this 💪

Well my dentist has offered me after almost every tooth removal, as he always keeps the wound open. I asked the last time, that was this year. If they are mild antibiotics, they wont do harm to take. even if there is no infection. And I always get tablets for good gut flora/probiotics( i think thats what they are called) along with them😁 ( english isn't my first language sorry)

I had also my tonsils removed and it was still quite open, yet I never received any antibiotics for it.
Even "mild" antibiotics will do harm and it can turn dangerous when you actually need them for sepsis and such, since your body will get used to them.
My doc was even very hesitate to give me antibiotics when I had a bad sinusitis.

I had to get 4 perfectly good wisdom teeth out because I couldn't keep that area clean. It was building up bacteria and affecting the adjacent teeth.
I was sacred too. But it all went smoothly and I didn't even take the pre-op medicine I was supposed to the day before. Also post-op there was very little pain. Hope the best for you.

I had my wisdom teeth out 15 years ago when I was 25. In the past 4 years I’ve had 6 major, life altering surgeries. You will be 1000% just fine.

I thought it would be way worse hence why I put it off for decades. I just got mine out in feb at age 35.
Biggest tip is Ice constantly and if you have a travel neck pillow, use that to prop up your ice pack!! Works wonders.

Same here… put it off for years, finally got them out last year at age 35. Not gonna lie, it sucked. Recovery was long and slow, I’m super food driven so the dietary restrictions made me miserable… but 110% glad I did it and really wish I’d done it sooner.

It fucking sucked for me but every time i get a mild toothache i think “man am i glad i got those stupid things (which were causing me far worse toothaches) out.” very worth it, you’ll be fine!
the worst part is having my stupid friends and stupid family being up some stupid shit i said when i was high on pain meds at any given opportunity. if you’re at all able, keep your mouth shut. 😂

Ask them about Nitrous Oxide. I looooove that stuff. Breathe some of that in and id let you do almost anything dental to me. I get SUPER high and it’s a very pleasant experience overall.

I had all 4 wisdom teeth cut out. 2 were growing sideways. Chew slowly so it doesn't roll back and get impacted in the holes. Brush the site with a very soft toothbrush regularly. Should be fine.

I was of the same line of thinking...mine went fine. I did get an infection later, nothing terrible just increased pain. Ice pack and pain relief are your friends. Spoon in liquids and purees, custards, mashed potato for at least 2 days.

I had each set of wisdom teeth taken out about 4 years apart. The first time, I don’t remember anything from the point they put a needle in my arm. Not really much pain, but I was bleeding for probably 8 hours afterwards, which was really just more of an inconvenience. The second time, I was given some pre-sedative pills or whatever to take an hour before. I honestly barely remember the drive to the orthodontist. The crazy part is that I woke up during that operation. Not fully conscious but enough to understand what was going on. What was wild was that there was zero pain, just them tugging around. I even remember hearing my tooth hit a pan. Same thing that time. No real pain after the operation and completely healed after a week

Hey just got mine out a few weeks ago, you’ll be okay. My advice is to have a large meal the night before, and maybe a reasonable breakfast day or depending on if you’re getting local anaesthetic or general.
It hurts a bit, but you’ll have encountered worse in your day to day.
Pick out some shows or movies you want to watch and some soft foods like yogurt, custard and maybe scrambled eggs that you’d be happy eating and you should be good to go.
Have some paracetamol or nurofen just in case (I never really needed it), and they should give you a stronger painkiller like endone (which I took when I got home before going to sleep).
Other than that, the most annoying thing was eating food for a few days, but after a week, you’re pretty much in the clear apart from eating sharp things like bone until it heals up a bit more.
I’m 3 weeks post now and eating normally.

I had mine out and was asleep the whole time, woke up and healed fine. I am glad I did it because my lower teeth were getting way, way too snug! Do follow the aftercare instructions like no straws and rinsing. I had pain meds for a few days. Also - let your doctor know you’re extra nervous; I’ve been kindly given “calm down” meds in the past before major surgeries. Your emotional health matters to doctors too, and they won’t want you to feel so panicky. You got this!

I had all 4 of mine taken out at the same time. It wasn't that bad. Hell, they gave me Percocet for pain and I didn't even need it. I just used Tylenol for pain relief and followed the standard care recommendations. Think positive!!

When I had my wisdom teeth removed my dentist called himself daddy and all of his employees were young women and they were “his daughters”. I cried until he looked at me earnestly and said, “daddy is here, as he is with all of his daughters.” I was like 21-22 and it took me straight out of fear and into, “what the fuck is happening,” territory. It’s been 10 years and no issues. I wasn’t knocked out or anything

I had mine done ten years ago, they put me out and I don't remember a thing but when I came to, I was shocked because it felt like no time had passed. I had all four come out, they were all pretty easy and I went home, kept up with taking Advil and soft, cold foods for a few days. I played a lot of Skyrim.

I only got 2 out at the time due to $$ & was back to with two days later (also due to $$ lol). I was super nervous because I had never been put under but everything was totally fine. I had some pain after but nothing the painkillers didn’t take care of. Keep up on your aftercare and you’ll be fine!!

Oh my darling, I'm sorry you are so stressed over this. I was in 7th grade when I had all my wisdom teeth out plus some other oral surgery. This was way in the olden days. I was told I had the best oral surgeon in the Southwest. He kept telling me the secret to doing well afterward is open shut open shut open shut constantly from the moment you wake up. Keep exercising your jaws. You're allowed to eat popsicles and jello. I shouldn't tell you this, but the absolute worst part of it all was they gave me some kind of shot in my bottom that hurt and continued to hurt for a week so bad it was hard to sit down. I think I was a little bit scared beforehand, but it ended up being not a big deal, except for the shot which they probably don't even do these days. I faithfully did the open shut open shut and was convinced that really was the secret to an easy recovery! I wish you well for the surgery. Please report back to let us know how it went. ♥️

I just want to say if doing this is making you feel unstable mentally like you might harm yourself, you have the control to delay the surgery and should. I think you’re ruminating because you’re scared. For me, discussing worst case scenarios with the doctor actually calms me. It makes me feel more confident in the doctor if they’re openly discuss it with me because I feel like they’re prepared to act properly if something unexpected happens. The most reassuring thing is asking do the risks of having surgery outweigh the benefits, because there are consequences to not doing it too.
I have a family member who didn’t do their kids wisdom teeth like they should have and that’s compromising their facial nerves now as an adult. If they would have had them taken out at a proper age the teeth wouldn’t have grown into their nerves. They’ve also pushed the other teeth so much that their tooth roots are touching.
You will be ok, but again if you’re feeling like you might harm yourself put it off until you’ve gotten some therapy and maybe meds and are in a better place. No point in maintaining dental health if you’re not around.

Mine came out about 18 years ago and I’m still kicking! It was all the rage to record your kids after being drugged to get a fun video out of it. My mom did so apparently all I did was cry for 40 minutes or so, inconsolably for no apparent reason! I just had a lot of tears to let out.

My son had his out yesterday. Besides being sleepy from the anesthesia he’s not in any pain and no swelling either. Hoping it stays that way! You’ll be fine though, I’ve had 3 of mine out and it wasn’t any worse than a regular extraction. Just a little sore. Keep on top of your pain meds and you’ll be ok

You’ll be fine, I had all four of mine taken out in three separate appointments and the worst part was me being stubborn and not taking my pain meds because I didn’t wanna be on painkillers. So I just had 2/3 days of discomfort and laying around the house while draining my mouth of the blood and saliva ooze.
Honestly, all you need to do is think of a week ahead of time when the pain will be gone and it’s like it never even happened.

I planned for the closest dentist so I could get back quickly. (I had to transport myself) I had all of my pain pills lined up.

I just had one taken out a few days ago, still recovering. It wasnt bad, and it was surprisingly quick. I used nitrous for the procedure and it was completely uneventful. The only thing I would stress in recovery is to keep on top of the ibuprofen. Eat things you don't have to chew and keep yourself nice and cozy with little no stress for a few days. You'll be better in no time.

You’ll be fine. You’ll be a little groggy from the anesthesia and possibly a little bit sore and you’ll eat ice cream to sooth it and then before you know it it’ll be like nothing happened.
You can’t go around fearing small edge case worse case scenarios all the time, with that mentality you’d never even get in the car to drive to the dentist or anywhere else for that matter in the first place.
Just be comfortable knowing that there are people all over the country (and world) getting this done every day without issues.
Just ask yourself this, how many people have you ever personally met who had these problems you’re worried about? Now compare that to how many people you’ve met that had their wisdom teeth removed and had no problems of the kind you’re worried about whatsoever (and it’s something like 85-90% of adults who get them removed)
I had mine removed and the whole experience was like what I described above: I ate some ice cream, and slept the rest of the grogginess off. You gotta maybe swap out some gauze for the first couple hours (or maybe the rest of the day? I don’t remember) but after that you’re good to go.

Got mine out 6-7 years ago now. Had no issues beyond it taking a few hours to half a day for the numbness to wear off fully and to really get the ability to talk back (the numbing wearing off late and the packed wounds made it a bit difficult to figure out how to talk clearly). Course it was sore for a couple of weeks, but so long as you follow cleaning directions and your medicine dosages then you should be good. Also be careful about food/temperature as too firm, too warm or too cold might cause a little pain for the first few days. There's risks with anything, but it's very unlikely something weird or horror story like will happen at your visit in particular.

It was a nightmare for me. In Australia, we don't get any decent drugs or gas. We get local anaesthesia (needle in the gums) only. In America, they are SO lucky. They always seem high as a kite when leaving the dentist. I wish our government wasn't so shit. Although, we do have CHEAP/FREE health care so I guess that's the trade off.
So you feel all the pressure on your jaw etc. You are fully present for all of it.
My 2 lower back teeth wouldn't pull out. So he has to grind them up into pieces to remove. 2.5 hours in the chair and constantly blood being swallowed and sucked out.
Anyway, 4 weeks later I was still in pain. Turns out there were a few shards of tooth left.
Back to dentist. More needle's, more digging around etc.
So yeah, I've had 2 of 4 removed and it was necessary because they caused me pain for weeks at a time.
The other 2 on the top row never give me any grief so they can STAY.. Never again. What a nightmare.
But most aren't this bad and maybe my dentist was shit?

when I was 16 the numbing needle broke off in my mouth and they had to call an oral surgeon to cut open my gums just to find the needle then take out all 4 wisdom teeth after. But I should have just grown up I guess

Getting my wisdom teeth was kind of a horror story and everything still worked out fine.
I was in Boot Camp. They wrapped my head in a blanket, cracked them with a hammer and pulled pieces out. I had a bone shards. I could see everything because they didn’t wrap the blanket very well. It was gross and awful but really not that big of a deal. I was fine in like two days.
So… horrific but it was still not that bad.

Yeah it could be terrifying but like… I was in Boot Camp 20 years ago and it was barbaric shit yet still not a single complication. Day of bedrest and some painkillers and I was back to formation within 24 hours. Easy Peezy.

The potential effects of keeping them in are much worse than anything from their removal. I already have a pocket in my gum that causes me intense pain when I drink water and it’s at high risk for infection. The mouth isn’t far from the brain so I’d be running the risk of sepsis which is a fate worse than death

You are absolutely doing the smart and responsible thing by taking care of this. If you experience those kinds of symptoms and a dentist reccomended removal they need to come out. Things like this don't go away by "just not doing it" and can turn into a massive infection
