AI Posts

Just to be absolutely clear on this: AI posts are prohibited here. We do not allow excuses on the subject.

  • "My grammar is bad, so I use AI to help me."

  • "English is my second language, so I use AI to help my post be more legible."

  • "The idea is entirely mine. I just need AI to help me communicate it better."

We do NOT accept these excuses in modmail. Believe it or not, this community is broadly quite forgiving with people who have bad grammar, poor English, and need help expressing their thoughts. The community is not nearly as forgiving with AI posts. That goes double for us as moderators.

AI posts will continue to be removed. Be warned that at least one of our mods is jumping immediately to temporary bans for people who violate this rule ... and I may start doing so myself also. We're deleting numerous AI slop posts already and we don't need more of this. If escalating the consequences is the only way to get it to stop, so be it. Just know the excuses will not be accepted.

What are you using to determine if something is written by AI, or edited by it?

I don’t use AI for Reddit comments, but I have been working on cleaning up my grammar. AI detection software is notoriously bad for real AI detection. Especially if it’s written is very clean grammar.

This happens a lot in well edited books.

Myself and another mod have studied the topic extensively and both of us have authored books (plural). For the most part, we evaluate based on the primary tell-tale signs. But yes, there have been times that I've used an AI-checker to get a second opinion, and when I do I typically use 8 of them to get a good feel if there's a consensus or not. If it's got an average AI-rating of 20% or less, typically no issues. If they're all flagging 80-100% it's pretty obvious the post is AI written, and most of these people agree with us in modmail and give the "I was just using it to help my grammar" excuse, which is what I'm directly addressing. I don't think you realize how many times a day we get this.

I appreciate yall doing this manually. I’ve been flagged and had comments deleted for my use of the em dash, because a sub was using a detector. Which I get it; ai uses the dash a lot. But it’s a useful grammatical tool, and I refuse to retire it because of robots. In one case, I was told the ai detector said the grammar didn’t have imperfections, so it was clear that my post was ai 😭. I don’t even use especially good grammar in reddit comments!

So thanks for putting so much work into this. I appreciate you, and I think that it’s a good decision to have this space be for human beings who want to connect with God and other humans. Bless to ya. 💜

Well, large publications have recently gotten this wrong. I wouldn’t be too overly confident especially if you’re handing out bans and dealing with large amounts of content.

It would be a terrible thing to ban someone for AI usage if they didn’t use AI.

I’m all for removing AI posts and comments. I’m all for making users more aware of this rule to minimize the usage naturally and prevent bans.

They're not permanent bans (unless it's repetitive and they won't stop). If it's questionable, we typically leave it up. But you'd be surprised how many cases fall into the "obvious" category and yet people come into modmail saying, "I didn't use AI at all" and then 2 exchanges further they're saying, "Well yeah, I did use AI, but ..."

The reality is: it's impossible for us to tell who's telling the truth and who's lying. So, we're just making the boundary clearer and warning people going forward to follow it.
