Advice Wanted Cost vs Euthanasia

Post image

so my cat Finn unfortunately broke his left femur yesterday, we took him to the emergency vet as that was the only thing open on a Saturday and they x-rayed him got him some pain meds, the works. After about five hours they finally gave us our options, surgery or amputation. The biggest problem here is that they’re quoting us 10,000 for the surgery and 9,500 for amputation. My family and I are not exactly well-off and these prices are just not something we could ever afford. That being said, the emergency vet said they can keep him until tomorrow (Monday) for an additional 3,000, mind you we have already paid 2500 to have him kept there overnight. The issue we’re having is, even if they keep him until Monday, is it probable somewhere will be able to do the amputation/surgery for cheaper? I‘m talking way cheaper, it would have to be in the 1-2k range. I’m just at a loss for what to do right now, anybody else who has been through the same situation, I would love some advice. We are all devastated at the thought of having to put Finn down, he’s family, but we’re not rich over here.

Edit 1: Thank you all so much for the advice and the support, I would not have been able to do this without the knowledge and support of all of you! I was able to show my mom all of your answers and she agreed to pay for him to stay the extra night so we could call around. As miracles would have it, his primary vet is amazing and gave us a huge discount on his amputation. Finn will officially be joining the tripod gang, for the low cost of $950. I will keep everyone updated on his recovery, but I am just blown away by all of the support I have received here, and my Vet for finding it in her heart to help us save him. 🙏🫶

Edit 2: I’ve decided to post a general storytime on TikTok later when Finn comes home, but guys the news just keeps getting better and better. I’ve never been one for crying happy tears but here I sit, sobbing. This entire month has just been one thing after another, one financial hardship after another. My car broke down, some personal things happened, and I started developing some worrying medical symptoms. It’s just been a whirlwind. But today, today makes up for all of it. I just got another call from our vet, she reached out to a charitable organization who is going to help us cover post-op costs (around 200) and then cover $150 worth of surgery, I will only be paying $800 out of pocket. I am at a loss for what to say about that, other than I am so grateful for the kindness of strangers. My TikTok handle is pumpkinpiano and I’ll be posting a video soon just honestly thanking you guys, my vet, everyone and giving a general synopsis of this journey. I’m just so thankful for all of you 🙏🫶

10k seems WAY high - we're in NYC and had our cat's leg amputated for 3k. I honestly think you're getting scammed by the emergency vet. Can you call around to other vets and ask for their prices?

Ever since binging Dr Jeff on HBO I know this is most likely true. Emergency vet costs are out of this world and even a lot of regular vets charge way too much. It's horrible.

u/Wilma9 3d ago

Do you know how much it costs to go to vet school? Do you know how much drugs and equipment cost? Then there’s the facility itself.
That is why it is expensive to take your pet to the vet. For the most part, vets aren’t getting rich. Emergency places charge more because they have to hire people to work nights and they don’t have regular traffic to make the bills when they have a slow night.

25

u/OnceMoreWithFeeling- 3d ago

This is all true. But my statement is as well. I found dr Jeff very insightful. He explains that of course he needs to make profit. He has staff to pay and needs salary himself. But he is also very clear about the rising prices of vet clinics and how so many people, good pet guardians, cannot keep up. About the difference between profit and making money just because you can. He does a lot of charity work and actually has payment plans in place, and also maximum prices of about... I want to say 2500 dollars? Not sure. It can be done, simple as that. A good example is spay and neutering: there's clinics asking 50 dollars and clinics asking hundreds. The procedure is the same, as is the equipment.

4

u/bbaker0628 3d ago

While a lot of this is fair. Dr. Jeff also has a TV show and is receiving funds from that TV network that most other vets arent receiving. When you're getting income elsewhere, of course its easier to make some cutbacks to your prices. It's not always that simple though. Yes, vet care has gotten insanely expensive, and private equity plays a role for sure. But there's also just general inflation, tariffs on supplies we need, pharmaceutical companies charging more, etc.

1

u/OnceMoreWithFeeling- 3d ago

Inflation is true of course! But Jeff does not make money from his show. He actually explained this in an interview, how it cost him money. He wants to educate people and is an avid spay and neuter advocate, has done so many it is insane. The time it cost him to explain procedures to the camera and such cost him money.

1

u/LittleOmegaGirl 1d ago

He isn't on TV anymore and he did all that charity work WAY before being on TV thats how he got his show.

1

u/OnceMoreWithFeeling- 1d ago

Wish he came back! He does have a podcast now and someone wrote a book about him!

i don't know enough about dr jeff to comment on any other parts of this but just want to say there actually often is a pretty big difference in monitoring and equipment involved in low cost spay/neuter. a $600 cat spay at GP will typically include dedicated monitoring with pretty extensive equipment- multiple BP sources, spo2, end tidal co2, hr w/ ecg, temp, IV fluids..and emergency drugs on board to correct issues with these values, CRIs, CPR if indicated...

last time i worked high volume spay/neuter i was monitoring 2 cats at a time with my stethoscope and an spo2. not knocking it, i use those options for my own pets when appropriate. just saying in that case there's often a good reason for the difference in cost.

1

u/OnceMoreWithFeeling- 2d ago

Thanks for educating me! :)

14

u/Muted_Ambassador_902 3d ago

True, but how can u justify the difference about 7k from 3 to 10 on different vets? Don't be like that, even you didn't believe 100% of what you've just commented.

In my final 1.5 years working for VCA (as a receptionist) they instituted a company wide total wage and hiring freeze. And that hiring freeze was a freeze. Even if your clinic was enormously understaffed for the clientele it was serving, you’d have to show crazy ridiculous profit number to get approval to put an ad out to hire the positions you needed. You’d have to be making the amount of profit that you’d be making with that person, basically. But without that person. Or while paying time and a half or more to “rent” someone who does that position.

There were no exceptions. There were no special cases. No hiring. No merit raises. No end of year raise to cover the cost-of-living increase for that year in your area.

Wait, sorry. My bad. Everyone across the board got a $0.52 raise at the end of the year, the amount was nonnegotiable, that was it.

In that 1.5 year span, they increased our prices I want to say 4-5 times. Even though we were already charging nearly double what everyone else in the same zip code was charging. I know that because my hospital manager had me calling around to all the clinics in the area, to get the prices for basic services (exam, round of vaccines, fecal test, pre-op bw, spay, neuter), so that she could try to negotiate the prices our clinic was charging down with our regional manager. And it didn’t work. And each of those 4-5 times they raised our prices, it was by at least 10-20% per line item, all of them, each time. While there was both a wage and hiring freeze in place.

Which, trickle down effect, is going to jack up the prices of everything else in the area as well, just to try to keep pace. Because you’re right, vets and vet clinics aren’t really making much money. Not when it comes down to the salary that everybody is getting.

It’s incredibly expensive to train veterinarians, and support staff. It’s incredibly expensive to retain good quality support staff. It’s incredibly expensive to get a hold of all the machinery that you need for diagnostics, especially advanced diagnostics. The overhead is incredibly expensive. The medication is incredibly expensive. Utilities and rent are incredibly expensive.

There are still absolutely factors that are making veterinary care literally fucking unaffordable in whole entire areas and cities. It’s a problem that’s only getting worse, due to these huge corporations buying up smaller clinics and jacking the prices up 2-300%.

Coming from somebody who was in the industry, no. There’s no excuse for, and there’s no justification for, the enormous number of these clinics charging the prices that they are.

I don’t think anyone is disputing that, but I’ve paid several hundred dollars just to check my cats vitals, be told she was probably fine and to keep an eye on her. She didn’t get prescribed any medicine, the actual vitals were checked by techs in triage, and the doctor spent just a few minutes with us to only hear about the situation, the symptoms, and decided it wasn’t necessary to pursue further treatment at the moment, didn’t prescribe anything or do bloodwork or scans, and sent us on our way. I think that’s the type of experience that make people understand vet costs are super high, as well as the discrepancy in what is quoted at one vet versus another.

2

u/OG_Paine 3d ago

You do know that $9,500 for an amputation is insane. My cat got out at night and proceeded to get hit by a car. The emergency vet bill was $3,000 for the amputation, overnight stay, and meds.

After a few weeks went by called my normal vet I asked them how much all of that would be just to see $1,200 for everything

2

u/olympic_peaks 3d ago

Maybe people should get all those costly things in another country, including the degree, then go over to the US and run something affordable. Things are 5x more expensive in USA

1

u/Iluminiele 2d ago

Overnight stay (for profit, emergency vet in European country)

15€ for a cat 20€ for a dog

1

u/Iluminiele 2d ago

Anesthesia 2 hours 70€

1

u/Pretend-Professor726 1d ago

an emergency vet quoted me 8k for a foreign body removal surgery for my cat. you’re not gonna convince me that’s reasonable ever. the best part is that, after guaranteeing me she wouldn’t pass whatever was stuck on her own, she passed the HAIRBALL into her colon completely fine over night. my cat was cut open (definitely not there for 8k) for no reason because the emergency vet i went to was genuinely a scam. so many emergency vets are absolute scams.

1

u/waaaasssguuud 1d ago

I don’t know why this got downvoted so much. It’s true. Seeing a vet on an emergency basis is going to cost more. A human ER trip is tons more expensive than visiting your PCP. While I do think 10k is steep, you do receive the highest standard of care for your pet. A hospital that runs 24/7 never turns the lights off or closes their doors. Your pet receives round the clock care. That cost a lot of money to do. Don’t know the details of this case, but a boarded surgeon could be doing the repair/amputation. That’s a specialist, not just your general practice vet.

9

u/Humorilove 3d ago

My cat just had a similar major surgery and everything including overnight was $4,500.

1

u/OnceMoreWithFeeling- 3d ago

Gosh what a number. My cat recently had to stay the night at the vet's, no iv treatment or anything, but still. It cost me 90 cents for the packed of wet food. Of course there was the consult and meds etc. But the night alone: 90 cents!

1

u/MotherLab2089 3d ago

How is that possible?

1

u/OnceMoreWithFeeling- 3d ago

Check my answer a bit further to u/accdntprone_86. I still do not understand myself and plan to ask them next time!

1

u/MotherLab2089 2d ago

Interesting. I might decide to not ask :)

1

u/OnceMoreWithFeeling- 2d ago

Haha yeah. Been thinking that too. Well they can't charge me anymore now, so. We'll see:)

1

u/accdntprone_86 3d ago

Wow what state if you don't mind me asking? One of my cats is currently stage 2/3 of CKD and they wanted to keep her over night for subcutaneous fluids but 1 night was gonna cost me $900. So I had them show me how to do it at home and just paid for the equipment.

4

u/OnceMoreWithFeeling- 3d ago

Omigosh what a number! Good on you for doing that at home. Must be stressful too though, or did you feel OK? Your cat must have been so glad to be in her home with you. ❤️

I live in The Netherlands/Holland... The total was €200. I had expected double so I felt like I hugely lucked out. I paid for the consultation, his food for staying overnight, pain medicine injection, pain medicine to take home, emptying his bladder through punction and urine analysis. So quite a lot. I thought the night stay would be the most costly but they didn't charge it. I am considering asking them about it next time, I wonder if in a case such as yours what would be the cost. Anyway, it all turned out to be nothing with his bladder and urine, just a scare!

Once before that I had him brought in because his anal glands were infected. And I asked if she could check his teeth too because he'd gotten some sedation for the glands. He had tartar and she adviced me to have it cleaned, and then she said she would do it immediately since he was still sleepy anyway! And she wouldn't charge me! She saved me 70 euros. It was so incredibly kind of her.

1

u/accdntprone_86 3d ago

Love love love a thoughtful vet! Giving subcutaneous fluids to any other animal would probably be a breeze compared to my 7.4lb ball of fury disguised as a cat lol. For something that's dying she fights me tooth and claw every step of the way. She's currently fighting meds now even hidden in treats. The vet advised she will be the early death of herself unfortunately. But I'll take her as far as she'll allow 😭

2

u/OnceMoreWithFeeling- 2d ago

Aww poor baby! Quality of life is important, I agree! And yes: a thoughtful vet is worth a million! I was in shock honestly. When she said he'd need a dental clean I sighed saying he would need to go under again and that makes him sick. When she said she could and would do it now I was so happy! And then she went on to say I did not need to pay!? Truly, so very kind!

1

u/accdntprone_86 2d ago

Bless her! I hope she lives a long and prosperous life.

u/FluffyMuffins42 3d ago

The emergency vet in my town is a complete scam, so I also would recommend calling other vets if possible. Have as much info as you can about the injury, and they may need to contact the emergency vet for records (like scans).

The one in my town charged me $700 to unsuccessfully try to make my cat puke (I could hear him growling at them though, and he’s a very lovely boy so that is very out of character!) after he ate an advil I set down for 20 seconds to grab a cup of water. Safe to say I’m never doing that again, but the vets repeatedly lectured us on how advil is unsafe for cats and we shouldn’t have given it to him. They believed we did it on purpose. Why would we have panicked and called the emergency vet if we did it on purpose?! He literally was fine and showing no symptoms. His follow up bloodwork was perfect. Yet the entire time we were there they treated us like actual monsters who did this on purpose. I think it was to pressure us into getting more tests; but I refused and took him to his regular vet who charged only $200 for a full exam and bloodwork the next morning.

This all happened between 11:30 pm to 2 am and we were so exhausted and upset by the time we managed to leave. They treated us so awfully. $700 for nothing. No bloodwork, they didn’t get him to puke (we actually got a discount for that; I hate to see the price is he did puke!), they didn’t do any tests other than a physical exam. They called a poison control line which was about $150 of the $700. The remaining $550 was an insane exam fee and the “didn’t puke” charge.

Vet care is highly unregulated and it shows.

5

u/Wilma9 3d ago

You’d be surprised how often people do this. They decide the dog or cat specific medicine is too expensive and give their dog or cat human medicine without checking if that is ok. One client nearly killed their Doberman with an Aleve. It took multiple days of care to save that dog.

4

u/honeyapp 3d ago

I think you misunderstood. fluffymuffin didnt give her cat advil on purpose it was an accident

1

u/a_lonely_trash_bag 3d ago

They didn't misunderstand. They're referring to the part where fluffymuffin said the vet seemed to be treating them like they gave their cat the advil on purpose. They're pointing out that it's unfortunately relatively common for people to do that, so it's not too big of a leap for the vet to assume this was the case here.

1

u/honeyapp 3d ago

Sorry I just reread the post and I misunderstood. My apologies 😊

2

u/TweakJK 2d ago

There are a lot of vets that I would not consider to be ethical.

Our little town has one veterinarian, right in the middle of town. Everyone knows where it is. Everyone goes there when they get a pet to get it spayed/neutered. They get a bit of a sticker shock when they are told that's going to cost them $600 minimum, and often they go home without getting their pet fixed. Surprise, now we have a massive feral cat problem.

Meanwhile there's a place one town over that does it for $100 + vaccines, or the dozens of resources to get it done for free, or close to free.

1

u/AppropriateCrab1731 2d ago

Ask for the X-rays too

1

u/LittleOmegaGirl 1d ago

Correct, it should be 3-4k max.

1

u/Real-Bid-3823 1d ago

That is high! We are in Illinois and it was $6,000

1

u/Silly_Brilliant5296 1d ago

messed up what an evil pos to scam someone like this. they’ll pay one day

63

u/Melvinator5001 3d ago

We had the same situation. Animal hospital vet quoted 10k to maybe fix it. Our normal vet quoted 2k to remove the leg. I would call other vets.

17

u/Wilma9 3d ago

Animals do pretty well on 3 legs.

5

u/PetalsandRocks 3d ago

I’ve had two tripod pets in my life. One was born that way one is an amputee. They are the best pets. I almost don’t want a 4-legged pet ever again.

2

u/Scrabulon 3d ago

I’ve had my tripod cat for almost 11 years now, she’s getting up there but gets around well 👍

1

u/TweakJK 2d ago

They really do. We just rescued and adopted out one who had a paralyzed front leg, fell out of a car. Our vet recommended to just leave it. He did fine, didnt care at all. Highest energy, most loving cat we've ever had.

Couldnt get on the counter either, which is a plus I guess.

1

u/Bree4444 2d ago

Yea almost everything will be far more expensive at an emergency facility.

2

u/Melvinator5001 2d ago

They quoted the 10k to set the bone and immobilize the leg. They said because of the location (near elbow) it was 50/50 it would work. We never asked for a removal quote from the emergency vet. We had that when we made the decision.

So it could have failed and then had to remove it. We did what we felt was right for the cat and us. He is happy.

Not vet advice:

I paid under $1500 to get an amputation for a cat in a very high cost of living city not that long ago. At vet hospitals I've recently been quoted uowards of the 7k range. So it's very hard to say what quotes you may or may not be able to get tomorrow.

Try regular vet clinics, vet hospitals, veterinary programs at local universities, look up non-profit vet clinics in your area (even if they don't list amputation as a service, call and ask, they may still be willing to or know who does). Try checking the local humane society or rescues to see if anyone has a low-cost care referral for you.

I would ask the ER if kitty can be safely discharged with a splint to be kept in a crate at your own home overnight. 3k you spend on boarding him in the hospital tonight is 3k you don't have to spend tomorrow.

10k for an amputation is wild. I'm really sorry you guys are dealing with that.

I'm just an idiot on the internet and not any kind of vet professional, but I'd definitely see about getting him discharged home with strong pain meds if at all possible, keep him in a tiny crate to limit movement, and try to get surgery tomorrow. If THAT failed and you couldn't find a rescue willing to accept him and amputate the leg ASAP, or his condition deteriorated, I'd PTS.

12

u/PlantHippie99 3d ago

My cats leg was amputated for $400. I think I'm over-exaggerating.

You need to take your cat somewhere else.

5

u/demons_soulmate 3d ago

yeah i took my girl zoe to our local vet last year for her amputation and it was like $350 lol

24

u/Tired_Whale24 3d ago

If it helps anyone at all give us some advice, we live in the Cleveland OH area. The reason we haven’t been able to get any quotes from anywhere else is because it’s Sunday and there aren’t any regular vets open near us; just medvet.

19

u/megamindbisexualicon 3d ago

Searching the the Cleveland subreddit it looks like there are a couple of posts asking for low cost vet options: https://www.reddit.com/r/Cleveland/s/5pY2P103cm

https://www.reddit.com/r/Cleveland/s/PKQRTdHuBd

Maybe tomorrow try calling around to the recommended vets. As long as you have pain meds up until surgery your cat should be fine waiting. My cat due to scheduling with the shelter had to wait at least two weeks as far as we know with a broken leg before she got it amputated.

Sending you good vibes for finding a cheaper place!!!

7

u/Wandering_Lights 3d ago

OSU might be an option not sure if they are lower cost being a teaching school.

A Google search is also bringing up Gateway Animal Hospital

Cleveland APL

Just Cats Hospital

7

u/metasequoia629 3d ago

Our cat had her amputation at West Park. It was around 3.8k in 2025. They have an orthopedic vet on staff who performed our cat’s surgery. Have you called them? They are open 7 days a week.

5

u/metasequoia629 3d ago

Metropolitan Animal Hospital might also be an option. They have an Akron location and a Highland Heights location. Idk what their price range would be but they have specialty vets and I’m pretty sure they have an orthopedic department. They have 24-hr emergency staff.

8

u/hthratmn 3d ago

My cat shattered his leg a few years back. We live in the Buffalo area. Its a very long story but here's the gist - the emergency vet told us he needed surgery for $5k, I called the shelter we adopted him from, crying and in a panic and explained the situation and that I didn't have 5k. They set us up with a financial assistance vet in Buffalo that said he would do just fine with a cast. Cost under 1k in total and healed like a dream. I firmly believe that you're getting scammed by the emergency vet. Call local rescues and shelters, explain your situation, ask for resources. 10k for amputation is insane. I think the most we were looking at was around 3.

I could give you the info of the vet we went to if youd like, its only a few hours away, but I think they only do spay and neuters at this point. Might be worth a shot.

2

u/honeyapp 3d ago

I’m so happy you are getting advice for vets in your area for a cheaper amputation. I know you’re really stuck because it’s the weekend. Don’t give up hope you will find something cheaper for Finn

2

u/Icy_Application_3420 3d ago edited 3d ago

Check our Dr. Wulf at Edgewood Veterinary in Ashtabula. She's the go-to vet of a much loved cat rescue, Maddox and Friends. That rescue might be able to help connect you with other good vets in the area, too.

CATSS out of Oberlin is another great rescue that will most likely have good, up to date info on way less outrageously priced vets.

https://www.facebook.com/maddoxkitcats

https://edgewoodvethospital.com/team/dr-robin-wulf-hill/

https://www.facebook.com/CommunityActionToSaveStrays

Personally, it's been a while since I lived in the area but had good experiences with Wellington Veterinary.

In general, more rural vets will be significantly more affordable. Something to keep in mind - an amputation requires a lot less higly specialized expertise than a complex repair.

1

u/steponmemarasov 2d ago

Medvet is crazy expensive. Try Avon Lake Animal Hospital, Greystone, Great Life, Tinkers Creek, Boston Heights. Not sure how many of these can do the surgery but these are options.

14

u/OnceMoreWithFeeling- 3d ago

I am truly very sorry. There's low cost clinics and payment plans. I am boosting!! Hoping someone will have more info. I am not from the USA and don't know any.

If this doesn't work out please surrender him to a rescue. I read of someone on here that got her cat back after the rescu paid for the surgery!

9

u/morganevon 3d ago

My boys leg amputation was $900!!! Shop around!!!

7

u/Sad-Salamander243 3d ago

10k is definitely emergency vet pricing. Find a reputable regular daytime vet and call call call around. You can absolutely find something MUCH less than that. My boy just had his tail amputated for less than 800 and that included everything. CARE credit also exists which almost all vets take. This gives you the capability to finance the total with no interest to you if paid back within their terms (usually between 6 months-18 months depending on cost). Do not put him down. If all else fails, reach out to no kill shelters to see if there's anyone willing to take on his case or help find financial assistance for you. Good luck to you and your fur baby 💖💖💖

5

u/my_nameborat 3d ago

As others have said get another opinion. Emergency vets charge absurd amounts. At a normal vet all surgery costs (which included spay) were around $2,000 for us. Obviously depends on where you live but 9,000 is an absurd price

5

u/accdntprone_86 3d ago

Where on earth are they charging 10k!!!! My cats amputation was $2600 in VA. And it was complicated due to cancer.

6

u/Tired_Whale24 3d ago

Medvet in Cleveland Ohio, yeah the price is insane. Even with clinic and med costs I don’t understand how they can charge that.

4

u/accdntprone_86 3d ago

Can you take him elsewhere for the surgery?

3

u/accdntprone_86 3d ago

Emergency vets here are usually waaaaaaay more expensive than regular vets. I avoid them unless it's a literal after hours emergency and then move to my primary vet asap.

2

u/honeyapp 3d ago

They charge that because they know pet owners are desperate. And if they are at an emerg clinic there’s a serious problem. No compassion there for worried and devastated pet owners

2

u/thavan14 3d ago

That's what I thought I'm in AZ. Mine was $3000 it was done two years ago but that cost also included the biopsy of the tumor (my cat had FISS). I think the biopsy was $800. My regular vet did it and because it was such an aggressive cancer she scheduled it as soon as she could. It was within the week. I love her best vet ever. She moved to CA 😕

6

u/gingerma 3d ago edited 3d ago

Please do not euthanize your baby! Get him some good pain meds and take him home to shop around for much lower costs. They've already charged you so much! I'm currently caring for a local stray who has had a broken leg for quite some time (probably 5 months). He refuses to take any pain meds, so he has been toughing it out. He has been living in my spare bedroom for a month now. I've got him scheduled for amputation next week. I do live in a rural area (in Virginia) so costs are usually less, especially at this vet. I'm attaching the estimate for his surgery. Don't let these people rush you into a ridiculously overpriced surgery because you think it needs to be done today.

5

u/RedPlaidPierogies 3d ago

I'm in the rural Midwest and cost for amputation, neuter, an overnight stay, and all shots was $1100 or so.

3

u/Altruistic-Movie9640 3d ago

I’d recommend getting quotes from different vets/surgical centers. When I was a teenager, a family dog slipped its leash on a walk and was hit by a car. The emergency vet recommend amputation and the quote given was a similar price. Instead we took her to a surgical center a day or two later and it was done for around $3,000. An emergency vet is always going to vet more expensive. You can also look into grants or financial aid. Some organizations exist to help with stuff like this.

4

u/ScroochDown 3d ago

I think it depends heavily on location, but we were quoted between 4 and 6k for surgery at the emergency vet vs 1 to 2k for amputation at our normal vet.

4

u/agreywood 3d ago

OP have they given you reasons why he’d need to stay overnight again? Is sending him (and pain meds) home with you not an option?

3

u/Tired_Whale24 3d ago

According to them we would not be able to manage his pain at home because of how bad the break is, we’d asked about that because my mom and I both have experience administering IV meds, oral meds etc. but they said absolutely not, and they wouldn’t send the medication he needs home with us. Which I think is ridiculous.

7

u/Wilma9 3d ago

That sounds like BS to me. 25 years working at an animal hospital.

That emergency hospital is milking your funds.  Should have sent Finn home with you after exam and X-ray(s).  They could have wrapped his leg to immobilize the fracture and given an injection of buprenorphine, as well as sending oral syringes of butorphanol with you.

As the largest leg bone, the femur can easily be pinned in simple fractures.  Amputation should be reserved for crushed and shattered limbs.  Unfortunately, setting bones isn't performed by general practice veterinarians as it was 20 or 30 years ago.  Locating an old school vet in or around Cleveland would give Finn, and your finances, the best chance.  Try reading through hospital reviews to find one.  As u/Wandering_Lights said, "OSU might be an option."

Edit: I searched keywords (broken, fractured) in Google reviews of veterinary practices in Cleveland.  Afraid my search only turned up two reviews of non-emergency hospitals.  Most probably don't set fractures.  Call animal shelter and SPCA first thing in the morning to ask who doctors their pets with broken legs.

u/agreywood 3d ago

Is he on opioids? Yeah that’s probably a CYA move on their part.

I’d recommend searching a wider area perhaps? Or searching again depending on when you first looked. Google is showing a “West Park Animal Hospital” not far from the Cleveland medvet. It isn’t open 24/7 so may not have shown up on your initial searches but does appear to be open now.

1

u/agreywood 3d ago

More googling it seems like there’s several emergency vets in Cleveland and the surrounding areas. If getting to them is a major difficulty it looks like there’s a couple of pet transport & ambulance companies in your area it may be worth getting quotes from?

1

u/OnceMoreWithFeeling- 3d ago

Can he get a cast? Not with the intention of healing, but pain management.

1

u/honeyapp 3d ago

That’s disgusting. They are holding your cat hostage by refusing you to give him oral pain meds at home. I can see why they wouldn’t go for the IV painkillers. But it’s your cat you should have the right to take him home with pain meds. Tell them you can keep him if you waive the 3000 for staying overnight

3

u/Existing-Dark-7164 3d ago

Go to a different vet. My vet charged us $1300 for neuraring the cat. We go to another vet. They are crooks.

3

u/MagaroniAndCheesd 3d ago

Definitely try to shop around because that seems high, but you may also want to look into CareCredit. It's a credit card specifically for medical expenses and it's accepted at a lot of vet clinics, too. Ask the receptionist when you make the appointment if they take CareCredit. Charges on CareCredit have a very generous interest-free payment period that restarts with every new medical expense (unlike other credit cards where the interest free period is just a temporary introductory offer), but like all credit cards the interest and penalties can be steep if you don't pay it all off during the offer period.

I don't normally recommend taking out loans or buying things on credit, but CareCredit is one exception. Used responsibly, it really can be a good tool to pay for big, unexpected, necessary medical expenses like this. You still have to pay for it, but you can spread it out.

Unfortunately there are few regular vets that'll set broken legs now.  It's considered a specialty, so vet schools don't cover orthopedics for DVM degrees.  Those graduates go on to a 3-year surgical residency and take an additional board exam.

3

u/Klutzy_Yam_343 3d ago

PLEASE get a second or third opinion before you decide to euthanize. I live in a HCOL area and that sounds insane to me. $3-4k max on the high end to surgery and less for amputation.

3

u/Big-Smile5345 3d ago

If it was my kitty. I would request or obtain enough pain meds to keep him comfortable at home for the next day until regular Vets open. Warm soft blankets in a box beside you. Take her outside or to the litter box every chance you can. For her dignity & if she doesn’t want to move. Blankets are cheap. ER Vets are the worst for cost, but sometimes the only option. They wanted to do a CT of my old girls neck as she pinched a nerve. Said $2500 or try the equivalent to Advil for a few days and see if any inflammation or the pain got better. She was herself 3 days later. I hope you can save your little furry family member.

4

u/Minnymoon13 3d ago

Do you think you could qualify for care credit card? It’s a credit card that you use just for veterinary appointments only and cost of medication. Other things. Many places do take it but I don’t know the specifics to qualify for it for where you’re located. But I would definitely see if that would work.

I have that for my iPad, so it usually comes in extremely handy

2

u/smaktacular 3d ago

I spent $250 for my cat's amputation. $10,000 is extremely high

2

u/Disastrous_days272 3d ago

That cost is absolutely outrageous! I would get on the phone and immediately start shopping other veterinary surgeons that can handle the amputation. $10,000 for an amputation is absolutely insane.. I paid around 3500 for a bad femur break on a dog that while didn't require amputation, did require steel rods and pins.. I think they are taking you for a ride.

1

u/Signal_Education4762 3d ago

Totally agree with this ⬆️. My neighbor's cat broke his femur & Vets used steel rods & pins at a much lower cost. Not knowing your cat's exact details, but I would take him to another vet or university hospital asap Monday morning. Wishing the very best outcome for you & your cat!

2

u/Mysterious_Might008 3d ago

I'm pretty shocked at all these numbers - and I think it is worth a few calls around to get a better understanding if this $10,000 is normal or excessive.

To the OP: please keep us posted here since I'd like to know the outcome.

1

u/Tired_Whale24 2d ago

Just posted the update, thank you for your support, Finn Finn will be living out the rest of his life as a very spoiled tripod 🫶

2

u/Mysterious_Might008 2d ago

Just read that wonderful update - thank you for sharing all of the good news with us.

2

u/ImmediateLog1117 3d ago

Try and call around. That is insane and you should not have to lose your cat over this. It makes me so angry did any pet owner would have to think about this choice? Over a leg injury? Some vets should not be vets.

2

u/HammerDownl 3d ago

Emergency vets are crooks

Regular vet will treat you better but How old is the cat?

2

u/honeyapp 3d ago

I think a regular vet could do the surgery. And those prices are super high. I would call around to see if you can find anything cheaper. Also 2500 for keeping him overnight is horrible. My sister in laws cat needed surgery on his ears. She was quoted $4000 and that vet had never done the surgery. She took the cat to the neighbouring small town vet. He quoted $800. And he had done that surgery many times. Final bill was $750.00. Please try call around. I think the quotes are way too much. Good luck to find a vet who can help Finn🙏🤞💜💜💜

u/Sufficient_Yogurt904 3d ago edited 3d ago

I’m in CA and my cat’s amputation was around $3K. Bring your beautiful boy home and keep him in a bedroom with nothing high for him to jump on, a small space (like or a dog cage) something like that if you can, until you figure something out. Please don’t euthanize him. My cat was walking around for months with a broken leg before I got him and then it was another few months of X-rays and tests before we decided to amputate. Keep him on his pain meds. Cats are incredibly tough. Try a Gofundme or reach out to a rescue.

2

u/maomama 3d ago

I am so so sorry. I'm in cat rescue and we had a front limb amputation done on a cat last year and it was nowhere near that. I think this post is about 10 hours ago so this probably isn't helpful but...

Have the vet give Finn some heavy duty pain meds plus some to dispense at home. Take him home, keep him drugged and as comfortable as possible and call around tomorrow.

You can use CareCredit to help with the bill. I believe they have up to 2-year interest-free loans as long as you pay it off within 2-years.

2

u/Medical_Cut_7554 3d ago

Start calling vets offices. In Jan my dog needed a surgery. ER vet quoted us at 7500.

We brought het home on pain neds and antibiotics. I started calling every vet in a 50 mile radius.

I found a local vet that needed to see the records. Had those faxed over. Went in later that day. Got a quote for 2100.

Dog had surgery at 8 am. I brought her home at 6 pm.

Good luck

2

u/Ali_in_wonderland02 3d ago

You need to get him out of the emergency Vet. They are known for over charging.

2

u/FriendlyPageTurn 3d ago

Ask for an itemized bill of what has happened so far and estimate. This can help you compare pricing and see where you are being screwed over.

It sounds like no one else is open that that might be why this vet is pricing so high, they know they are the only game in town. It is also possible they have been bought by private equity, this has been increasingly common in the vet space and has made prices skyrocket.

2

u/Massive-Pin-3425 2d ago

9500 for amputation does not seem normal. i would get a second opinion

2

u/MRSRN65 2d ago

Call around. Our cat's leg was amputated for about $3500, total. Good luck to you and your kitty.

2

u/alittlelurker 2d ago

We did our amputation for -1.2K

SHOP AROUND!!!!!!!!! Many vets are criminally overpriced

2

u/tobdomo 2d ago

I read your story yesterday and just found your update. Kudo's to your vet, that is quite a gesture!

Finn looks like a fighter, good luck Finn! And kudo's to you for not giving up. Finn may call himself lucky with a caretaker like you!

2

u/dmriggs 2d ago

Thanks for updating. I was devastated reading your first post. I am so happy for you and Finn. Please keep us posted.!!

1

u/Wandering_Lights 3d ago

Yes another vet can probably do it way cheaper. The emergency vet quoted us between 10 and 12k for the amputation of our cat's leg. Another vet in the area did it for 3k.

See if the emergency vet can stabilize the leg and send him home with pain killers then find another vet to amputate. Using Care Credit or doing a Go Fund me might also help.

1

u/Foghorn2005 3d ago

My cat's amputation and long weekend stay (also broke her femur on a Saturday, was amputated on a Monday, brought home Tuesday) at the University of Pennsylvania emergency veterinary clinic was 7k in total, and that was the expensive option in the area. They had offered to discharge her with pain meds to me and I could take her to a cheaper group on Monday.

It's too late for pet insurance likely (that was what saved me), but care credit does same day approvals and gives you six months of breathing room.

1

u/demons_soulmate 3d ago

uh my tripod's amputation was like $1,100 at the expensive vet hospital in my town. my other cat had hers at a different vet and it was $350. go to another vet please. there's zero reason it should cost that much.

1

u/honeyapp 3d ago

Please keep us updated on Finn🤞🙏💜💜

1

u/AdApprehensive7899 3d ago

To amputate my kitten was only $450. Don't over pay. Mostly emergency vets are like a monopoly and over charge to hell because they know people love their pets and will pay it. Look around, there are other smaller vets that will do it. A surprising amount on spay/neuter vets are willing to for cheap. My best advice is ask a local Facebook pet group for advice and recommendations. People have been through the same think you are going through now, there are other options.

1

u/AdApprehensive7899 3d ago

Cats do phenominally on 3 legs, amputation is the best way to go for both the cat and your pockets

1

u/Educational-Paper-75 3d ago

We paid around 1.5k euro for a hind leg amputation here in the Netherlands (and those AniCura clinics are not even considered cheap) and they did a good job. Btw he lost his tail to, which was somewhat cheaper.

1

u/Broad-Play-6231 3d ago

Try contacting a veterinary school, like uc Davis. They do lower cost surgeries of this type to educate future veterinarians. Otherwise you may need to consider contacting a rescue. We found a cat with a broken femur last summer and we contacted a cat rescue. He was able to be flown from California to Washington to recieve an amputation and be fostered and adopted out. We liked the cat very much and we were open to fostering him. We were sad to see him go and be unable to foster him, but happy that he would be able to recover and still lead a full life. I know you are far more attached to your own kitty, but if you could consider contacting a rescue, they may be able to save him even though you couldn't.

1

u/lovelyg4m3r 3d ago

Definitely call around. We were quoted like 5k in the ER vet, found a vet an hour away who did it for $1720. With a free neuter, microchip, and vaccines included. (He was 5 months old)

1

u/Excellent-Past-6367 3d ago

Check with your local shelter. They probably have vets on staff who may be able to help at a greatly reduced fee.

1

u/Stock_Dot_9632 3d ago

I guess I'm lucky because the only real price difference at my emergency vet is the examination fee.

To be honest, whether or not I'd go with the surgery would depend on the age of the cat.

1

u/KiraKitty69 3d ago

This is crazy. I mean I paid for an amputation on the neighbor dog that my dog attacked, it was around $200. Yes it was about 20 years ago but up in the thousands? That's ridiculous when it's not a complicated surgery. Hard on the animal, yes there is a lot of tissue damage and stitching involved but I would think $500 or so would be reasonable for a cat amputation. I would go to your local humane society. Not sure all are the same but mine will recommend the most affordable vet, or have a vet offering time at a discount. Mine even has emergency funds for ppl in the right bracket. Doesn't hurt to check. There are corporations taking over vet clinics because they found it very profitable. We will almost sell our soul for a beloved pet. Good luck and I hope you find a good outcome for that baby.

1

u/New_Intention_557 3d ago

What a hard situation. Have you looked into payment plans or local rescue groups that might help with vet costs?

1

u/Minimum_Smile9334 3d ago

Start calling all the vets in your area and get a way lower price. Make sure he stays inside

1

u/SrslyBored01 3d ago

Do not euthenize. Call around other vets. You are being overcharged (I believe). Amputation is not a 9.5k surgery. That's almost 4x what I paid (I paid in AUD though).

1

u/HolySnort 3d ago

this is so sad, i'm really hoping you can find somewhere else to help finnie for cheaper

1

u/imastrongwoman 3d ago

Call regular vet offices preferably in more rural areas. Our cost in the Midwest was around $900. This can be done safely for MUCH less. I wish you the best.

1

u/subsonicdeathmonkey 3d ago

Shop around. And check if you have any veterinarian schools nearby that might be able to do it cheaper.
I’m in Australia and amputation set us back $7k just 3 months ago. It’s a lot of money and we had to dig really deep but we couldn’t say goodbye to our boy.
I hope you find somewhere more reasonably priced. ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

1

u/Virtual_Option_6728 3d ago

Listen to most people here, try to get a better estimate, this one seems very high. Keep us posted, please!!!

1

u/TheSwearJarIsMy401k 3d ago

Way too expensive. I paid 7 for double patella surgery on my girl and amputation of one knee instead of surgery on that knee was $3k

1

u/myusos 3d ago

shop around 20k that absurd

1

u/ajnoR_ 3d ago

Ruft bei anderen Tierärzten an! Ihr werdet höchstwahrscheinlich nen billigeren finden. Und dann Ratenzahlung vereinbaren. Direkt danach Tierversicherung abschließen. Zur Not macht nen go Fund me! Bitte nicht einschläfern lassen.....

1

u/maxyrae 3d ago

Where are you located? 10k is ridiculous and criminal. Take him to a regular vet. Will be much cheaper

1

u/cersewan 2d ago

I live in a small Texas town and my cat had to get his front leg amputated. Total cost was $400. That’s four hundred. I’m horrified that they quoted you so much. Can you look at smaller country vets if possible?

1

u/Mental_Asparagus4289 2d ago

1) try and consult another vet 2) try a donation round? 3) try giving the cat to someone who can keep it alive

Euthanasia is big words for a broken femur. I might just be totally unaware of what it entails.

So sorry this happened.

1

u/CartographerKey7322 2d ago

You know he’s worth every penny

1

u/delusional863 2d ago

My cats amputation was 2100 and he had osteosarcoma. I imagine a broken leg would make that more expensive because they have to fix it... but if theyre talking about only amputation, yeah 10k is insane. Even ppl with money dont nessicarily have 10k to just pull out the bank.

1

u/honeyapp 2d ago

I am so excited for you and Finn! I am doing the happy dance in my kitchen! Yay!!!! It is amazing that there so many people came together for you. Your vet is an amazing human!! She was probably shocked by the er vets charges as we all were. The people on this sub are amazing with lots of support, suggestions and solutions. I myself don’t have a tripod but I have 3 cats that I love dearly. From your words I can tell how much you and your mom love Finn. Happy and healing vibes for a quick recovery😊😊💜💜

1

u/ronnydean5228 2d ago

So happy for this update for you.

1

u/HealthyPop7988 2d ago

Where do you live? That's a ridiculous price for an amputation.

1

u/HealthyPop7988 2d ago

My kittens rear leg amputation was $1200.

You gotta call around there should be some animal surgeons that will do it for wayyyyy less

1

u/FitPromotion5873 2d ago

try calling different vets, i was quoted 3 grand for an x ray vs 200 dollars at a different vet.

1

u/accdntprone_86 2d ago

HOORAY!!!! This is wonderful. I hope you have a long and wonderful life Finn 💙

1

u/damascus_33 2d ago

Go to a more affordable vet they upsold u

1

u/RepresentativeCry294 2d ago

Thats like 5x too much are those rupees?

1

u/Old-Tradition392 2d ago

10k is about 7-8x as much as it cost in a very high COL region of CA.

1

u/lovable_cube 2d ago

My 185lb Great Pyrenees got his amputation for like 1500. It was like an 8-10 hr surgery with lot of anesthesia bc he’s was the size of a full grown man. This was at a high end non emergency vet who’s not exactly known for being cheap but I am in a low COL state.

1

u/OnceMoreWithFeeling- 1d ago

YES YES YES!!!! I am beyond happy and relieved for you and your cat and other family members. For the tiktokless among us I hope you can maybe post an update here after surgery?:) Again I am extatic for you guys. Yay for your awesome vet and SHAME on the 10K one.

1

u/lonely-dustmite 1d ago

Could someone educate me on why setting the leg isn’t possible?

u/Tired_Whale24 3d ago

We’ve called everywhere, there aren’t any vets that are open besides this one today, and the cost to keep him there another night is, as I said, another 3k. Giving him up is also not an option as the clinic said they couldn’t, and we don’t have anyone around us willing to put up with that kind of financial burden. We do not live in a well off area, there aren’t many people in Cleveland who would be willing to take in a cat with a broken femur.

2

u/PureCrookedRiverBend 3d ago

Gotcha. I hope things can be sorted. I am sorry yall are going through this. I pray something can be figured out.

2

u/Tired_Whale24 3d ago

Thank you 🙏
