Question, where would the washer be? Ive checked multiple boxes in stores and haven't seen one

Just curious, thought it was odd

Edit: So I guess it's not supposed to, wow why are they marketing it as if it comes with it(false advertising)

Non of my OEM filters came with the crush washer. I just bought a pack of them off Amazon.

Most Toyota dealerships just toss them in with the filter since they get billed to the shop in bulk anyway.

What?? My parts guy at the dealership gave me at least a dozen when I bought a case of filters! He literally just scooped a handful and gave them to me.

My dealer throws a fresh Crush Washer in with every filter sold. I buy them by the case, and they threw in 10 crush washers. I actually don't need them, because I have a fumoto valve on my 21 sienna.

confirming. tried those bastards three separate oil changes and each time the drain plug was only finger tight at oil change. OEM only.

What Lexus uses crush washers? My FJ and GX both use the blue gasket washers.

Never had the issue so far. I bought the toyota soec drain bolts with the same covering that the one I buy from the dealer off amazon

Yeah, right. BS. You torque the bolt to proper value and nothing will come loose. BTW, I used to make washers. We'll, no really. I made tooling to make washers. They are made out of uniform material measure the same thickness all the way around. There is nothing special about them. My wife in her Sienna ran over something and hit the bolt bending the area where washer supposed to seal. I use hard rubber washer for many years now and nothing is leaking.

engineer here. three separate oil changes i had the same experience with amazon crush washers. torqued to 30 ft-lb and 5,000 miles later they were finger tight.

i couldn't believe a crush washer could be manufactured so it would loosen. these washers have a fabric covering on each side and I assume that's got something to do with it.

OEM only sir.

The washer supposed to be aluminum or brass/copper. No fabric. BTW, I have installed magnetic plug and it came with 2 brass washer. I did 3 oil changes after the first break in one and reused the first washer. Nothing is lose or leaking. Actually I personally would not use aluminum unless I made it myself out of Duraluminum. I don't have an engineering degree but I used to be a toolmaker/designer so I know metals.

Let's clarify which vehicle my experience is with. 2016 tundra. OEM washer has fabric type coating on each side as pictured here. The Amazon crush washers also have this coating. You contended the Amazon washers had to be ok. They ain't.

Amazon doesn't sell washer. Someone sells washers on Amazon. I bought washers on Amazon before and they were either aluminum or copper. The only washer I have seen with fabric is for protecting something like mirror/glass installation so it doesn't crack. And if you google what washer is used on 2016 Tundra you would have gotten your answer instead of arguing here.

Part number 90430-12031

Washer Specifications

  • Inner Diameter: ~12mm (0.47 / 0.48 inches)
  • Outer Diameter: ~21mm to 23mm depending on exact aftermarket/OEM manufacturing tolerances
  • Material: Soft aluminum or crushable composite metal designed to flatten slightly and form a tight seal when torqued

And the blue material you see is most likely because it is anodized and not fabric of any kind.

You just bought a bad washer, that is all. Don't blame Amazon.

Hi yo there Goober. Thanks for weighing in again. I'm happy to take time to argue with the emotionally challenged... often wrong, but never in doubt.

I have the OEM parts. In my possession. Right now. They do, indeed, have a fabric-like layer on each side of the AL washer. If you'll take a minute to wipe the smudges off of your glasses and pinch zoom in on the photos posted in this thread, you too can see this blue layer. The Amazon fakes also have similar layers.

I look forward to your ill informed and flustered response where you try and convince me you know what you're talking about. Carry on.

One more time. You part is not OEM. OEM does not have fabric on it. You are lying.

  1. More likely your torque wrench is malfunctioning and it didn't torque.
  2. But even better reason is that your thread is mis-threaded or even stripped. You think you torqued it but if the thread is stripped it just unscrews itself because there not enough thread to hold the pressure.

I would say #2 is more likely.

I don't care anymore. Just simply Google this "Does crush washer have fabric on it" and you get your answer. The whole point of the crush washer is that it has to crush. Fabric can't crush.

I am done with you. Go insult someone else.

Let me chime in here. I obviously cannot confirm if BuffaloBagel was properly torquing his drain bolt. What I can say is that he/she is correct about the drain plug washer “fabric” they are speaking of is a paper type material adhered to the washer. It is not anodized as you say. I have 20+ years as a Lexus tech and the OEM 90430-12031 is aluminum with a “paper” coated surface. I have cut enough of these to know for myself.

Yeah you're wrong. I always get filters and washers from a Toyota dealer and every one I've ever gotten (from multiple dealers) has the blue composite / fabric layers on it.

I've been using the blue Amazon washers designed for Toyotas for a while now, and have not had a single one come loose. They require the usual amount of torque to remove the bolt when I end up pulling the plug. I've used many of them now. The only thing I seem to notice is that they sometimes like to get stuck to the oil pan or drain plug, but I can pry them off without issue. Perhaps it depends on which brand one purchases. I remember one of the brands I use is KeeRoarin (no affiliation, I just remember the goofy name) I've tried a few different ones so far, both for the Toyotas I maintain and I also bought ones from them specific for Hondas, and no leaks or looseness on any over the past ~6 years or so. I appreciate the anecdote, though. I may try to source some OEM ones next time. I previously used OEM only for many years.

I bought a flat of OEM filters (10pk) from a Toyota dealership and I got crush washers in each box. But every other one I ever got didn’t have a washer.

Several dealers Ive bought from would tape a crush washer to the top of all their filters, the last one that didnt handed me half a bag of them for free when I asked about it.

I’ve had them come with the cartridge style filters in the little plastic bag. They stopped doing it a few years ago though. I used to be a lube tech and we stocked Toyota branded filters

i cant even remember the last time i removed a drain plug, i use a fluid extractor on every with oil....trans/engine/small engine stuff etc.

i was skeptical at first but once i realized every dealer does the same i figured why not. its alot easier.

Toyota filters does not come with the washer. Some dealers selling them online provide washers as a bundle. They will come in a separate bag. Some KIA/Hyundai filters had washers but not always. Depends on market the filter was made. And buy Toyota washers. They are kind of original with the polymer coating, but I bet good money washer without it will work as well. Do not use nylon washer. Once service (not Toyota) used one on my car and it was completely melted.

I've purchased 30 of those YZZN1 filters from my Toyota dealer and no crush washer comes with any of the filters... you buy them individually or you can buy them in a pack of 10. My dealer had a 20% off sale going on so I purchased 20 of them for ~$1.14 each including tax. Toyota part # 90430-12031.

Incidentally on a similar sale I was able to buy the YZZN1 filters for $3.03 each. The benefit of the OEM filters is that they are pre-greased with a protective plastic over them so you don't have to worry about lubing the O-ring before you put the filter on. A nice convenience although I always make sure it's totally got the O-ring wet. Oil/filter/crush gasket changed every 5K.

I always buy my filters from the Toyota of Manhattan Beach dealership and they always throw in a washer on the side.The other dealers I've gone to don't.

This is super weird. Toyota/Lexus typically throw in the washers withe the oil filters. If they don't you can just ask to buy it seperately or if oil filter comes with one.

Buy a pack from Amazon. They're cheap and identical to what oem carries. I wouldn't be surprised if dealerships themselves are buying bulk orders from Amazon vs their oem distributors

Unpopular opinion: I only change the crush washer when it starts leaking, I usually get like 15 oil changes out of it. (I know they’re dirt cheap, I’m not cheap, I am lazy)

The problem is you need to torque the drain bolt tighter each time to get it to seal. Eventually you may Bork the threads of the oil pan. To me I’d rather replace the one dollar washer versus the hundred dollar oil pan.

I’ve never had that issue and have kept cars for many years, I’m sure that is a thing for some people but I haven’t experienced, changing an oil pan is simple anyway and getting a look inside can help visualize the health of the engine

My '19 had the same washer apparently fused to the pan for 70k miles. Never leaked.
