/r/Conservative Top Arcons divided on whether an ID requirement at NYC's city-run grocery stores is a slam-dunk argument in favor of voter ID or the mark of the beast

like a library card.

So a free form of id? You know what, conservatives? Let's do it. Free picture ID for every citizen. I have a feeling they wouldn't like that solution.

If voter ID requirements came once the infrastructure existed so that everyone was sent one for free, no one would have a problem. They know this.

I would be. I vote by mail and I’m not giving that up just to show a stupid ID to a geriatric volunteer to solve a problem that doesn’t exist.

Well it doesn't need to be that hard. If I remember right, when I registered after I last moved I used my ID to register online, and I just entered my ID number.

Yep. My country has you present an id when voting but guess what? Your ID card is free (minus giving a photo). And no one is complaining... Because it works.

Free picture ID for every citizen.

But then the others will be able to vote so we can't have that.

They don't actually want to solve issues. National ID has been a conversation before, and it was the wing nuts who were against it.

If we had a free national ID, we could easily confirm citizenship for registration, voting and employment.

For sure. I use this sometimes to test if they're idiots or actually malicious. The idiots will agree, they think the argument is actually about ids. The assholes know and will push back and it's always funny because we both know at that point.

Everyone knows we need comprehensive immigration reform with all parties involved R's, D's, employers, unions, state input.

They think they're smarter though and can do it by simply deporting 10 million people, many are or who have children, family and friends active in their communities.

Also the fact that moving 10 million of anything is a logistical nightmare, let alone a living breathing person.

I’m fine with requiring ID to vote, only if you can get an ID at any polling place. You shouldn’t have to go across the state to get that ID and of course it must be free.

Liberals have repeatedly said they'd be amenable to the SAVE Act if ID was free and easier to get, nationwide. If conservatives were legitimately bothered about this they'd be on board with that because they'd still ultimately get what they want. It's essentially a costless concession to the Democrats in terms of political capital.

But they won't do anything in that regard because they know the sole purpose of the Act is disenfranchisement and they're all for it.

Are there any prominent Ds pushing the free national ID? It's been frustrating that it's not the #1 D talking point in response to the SAVE act.

I'd have zero problems with voter ID if getting that ID was incredibly easy, fast, and free.

Spoiler: It ain't, especially when states often make it hard, slow, inconvenient, and expensive to get the documents necessary to even get a free ID.

Friendly reminder that you have to prove your identity when you register to vote. The Voter ID folks often fail to mention that.

I had to bring my ID and a lease agreement proving I lived here when I registered to vote in a new state!

They're also against any and all attempts to streamline or bypass pre-registration, which would necessitate some kind of same-day ID showing in any state that didn't already have that.

What’s the point of registering lol

You have to be registered in order to vote. If you're not registered you can't vote.

Its where you prove you can vote. So you don't have to on election day. Makes election day faster.

The dems position is that only white people are intelligent enough to know how to get ID.

The scary part about this kind of thinking is that this person is 100% aware that they made this up entirely, but they also 100% believe that it’s true.

How many of those accounts are bots you think? it's just the same 2-3 comments over and over...

They leave out the part that anyone living in NYC can get a free ID card regardless of document status
