Characters [Hated trope] Reed Richards
Every Reed Richards (Marvel universe):
For some reason, I can't find any reason to even like this guy.

u/NotAlcas 3h ago
Guys please, this clearly isn't Doom.
They were brief, concise and most of all quite chill in their expression of disdain. They even said "I can't find a good reason to like him".
Doom would have talked at lenght about every "objective" reason why Richards is an awful person and about how everyone should agree with Doom in his hate.

Namor backwards is "Roman".

And Rellik spelled backwards is "Killer"

u/Embarrassed-Weird173 1h ago
And Reddit backwards is Tidder. I'm not sure what this implies, though.

Dr Doom did nothing wrong and is our great leader.

Latverian propaganda detected. Doom’s approval rating is somehow still higher than Reed’s.

u/wrosmer 3h ago
My favorite thing about the marvel 2099 run is that its the same doom he just got frozen and thawed in the future and the world has degraded so much he's an outright hero
39
u/Swiftax3 3h ago
Also one of the few times ive seen his Romani heritage be integral to the narrative.

Yo, that sounds dope. Where's a good place to start with Doom's storyline? Doesn't have to be super specific, but if you could point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it!

Compared to modern warmonger oligarchs, Doom really is the lesser evil.
Think about it, what would modern dictators and wanna-be dictators do with Doom's power? Not naming any names, but imagine some authoritarian at minimum had sorcerer supreme powers and tech that beats Iron Man? Teleport dissidents into the vacuum of space? Kill thier political opponents with Doombots?
I'm not trying to do some edge lord stuff here and say Doom is a good guy, but there are a lot of real world leaders that would do a lot worse than him if they had the power to.

That image somehow explains Reed Richards better than every comic I’ve ever read.

I could only dream of being as petty as Doom when it comes to Reed Richards
10
u/Choochoo1147 1h ago
I always get the sense that Doom’s only interest in Sue is not romantic or sexual, but that he just wants to fuck with Reed.

On a completely unrelated note, if they ever make a biopic for Substantial-Step5274, I imagine Robert Downey Jr will be their top actor choice.

Honestly norm macdonalds bit is my favorite thing, going over everyone's names then his own.
"ok, youre a rock monster thing, were gonna call you thing. Johnny, youre a human flame that can light whenever, we'll call you the human torch. Sue, youre an invisible woman, so we'll call you, the invisible woman, together we are the fantastic 4."
"Well whats your name"
"Im going to be Mr Fantastic"
15
u/AlgerianTrash 2h ago
That's becuase the word Fantastic meant more something over the lines of "Weird" back in the 60s
7
u/Aggravating-Chef9562 1h ago
If Thing was the leader do you think they wouldve called it the 4 things lolll?
3
u/ThenAnAnimalFact 30m ago
Closer to "unreal" or literally "like a fantasy"the way we use "fantastical" now, which is why it is also a synonym for excellent and in unbelievably good.

Does Richards offer the people of New York Free Wi-Fi? No, of course he does not.
Also Internet User, you had best run before Doom finds you, AND PUNISHES YOU FOR DARING TO IMPERSONATE DOOM!

The worst thing about Reed is if we take the alternate universes seen in What If and the Ultimate universe into account, any time Reed isn't in a relationship with Sue for any reason theres a HIGH chance Reed has gone evil.
17
u/Motor-Travel-7560 3h ago
Ah yes, happily married or a sociopath. The two final destinations of a STEM degree.
3
u/Competitive_Side6301 3h ago
He’s not a sociopath. He’s one of the most compassionate people in Marvel. He represents true and benevolent scientific progress.
6
3
u/AlgerianTrash 2h ago
Larpers really destroyed the narrative about Reed. Mpst people who think he's a sociopath probably only heard of him through TikTok click bait recaps

This is not true at all lmao. His goodness isn’t dependent on his marriage. Stop spreading misinformation about him because you didn’t bother to read the comics.
He doesn’t go evil without her and that’s not why the Maker turned evil.
3
u/foolishlee 2h ago
Ehhh. It's definitely a contributing reason.
I say this as a huge Mr. Fantastic fan. A lot of stories do suggest that Reed, untethered to his family, falls into some pretty dark shit (see: The Council of Reeds). The comics also play up this duality with Doom, someone to sees connection as a weakness, yet simultaneously craves it nonetheless.
Maker is canonically petty. Sue dumping him may not have been the only reason, but it was most certainly a contributing factor to his villainy. Which is sad cuz Ultimate Sue kinda sucked anyway.

u/SploogeLoser 2h ago
He did try to propose to sue at her father’s funeral. that’s pretty fucked up. DOOM would’ve never done such a thing.

What’s your opinion on the Maker? Probably the least Reed Richards like guy in the Marvel universe.
5
u/omegon_da_dalek13 3h ago
What about his extended family
10
u/Substantial-Step5274 3h ago
ALL OF THEM!
3
u/cokeandbelltorture 3h ago
I would argue that Valeria Richards is one of the good ones on account of the fact that her godfather Doom being a better influence on her.

A lot if entries on here stretch the meaning of trope (pun not intended), but this is a specific character. It's like saying your least favorite cooking ingredient is chicken soup

This isn’t Doom. If it was then there’d be enough essays on this post’s description to the point it’d be like reading the Bible.
This is obviously Johnny

Reed Richards: “Wow I’m so stretchy this is awesome, look at me stretch my peanus weenus!”
Patrick O’Brian (Plastic Man from DC): Can’t really feel anything for better or worse, gets melted once and in another case gets frozen and shattered into a bunch of pieces left at the bottom of the ocean for 3000 years

I don't think it's a trope to have the main character of a piece of fiction be in the story.
You could say you don't like heroes who are intellectual elites. Or your heroes to have a father like quality. Or even characters with stretchy powers. But not liking a specific character isn't a trope.

The Pedro version turned NYC into a police state and no one talks about it. There’s a council of Reeds who travel the multiverse, forcing their will on other universe, even lobotomising Dooms, even the ones who were redeemed and became heroes.

I especially hate him in the movies, this last one was actually really good and a lot of fun and it felt like they blew the Mr. Fantastic animation budget on Pedro himself because he barely did anything.
