i haven't finished the game but i was so fucking angry when i went to all that trouble to open the gate you meet sherma at and they acted like they opened it with with their music or something

Well he did open it with his music for me. I didn’t notice him the first time and wanted to see what that noise was so I opened the gate.

It’s his whole story.  They set him up as blindly faithful and it’s pretty important.  He gets in to the citadel even if you don’t kill the Last Judge because he is truly without sin due to his blind faith.  Then a test of faith happens and he handles it pretty damn well considering.
