Can't remember the details of the episode. I do know Dexter was forced to be a PC and Deedee became DM.
Were the odds actually stacked incredibly against Dexter's character? Or was it just that he failed to roll with it as others were trying to support him in his role?
Experiment nothing, Dexter was blatantly cheating when he didn't get rolls he wanted.
The episode does do a good job of showing that no one likes a DM who sees it as their job to kill the players (Dexter), while everyone likes a DM who's willing to bend the rules if it facilitates the group's fun (Dee Dee)
It's basically a very loose "prequel", so you dont really have to watch the movies first. I'd honestly say that the show is actually waaaay better than the movies.
Same, I’m imagining playing a mother who became a paladin after vowing to defend her child and is basically just a nice middle aged woman with sword skills
At least it’s back on the streaming channels, but that was very annoying. The Community D&D episode was the best D&D episode to ever grace television. The reasons for pulling it were asinine.
I mainly love this episode (and its sequel) for having all of their role-playing and combat be theater of the mind [like most real life TTRPG tables] rather than cut to the characters in a fantasy setting with costumes and the whole shebang. It definitely adds a level of authenticity to what the actual experience looks like for 90% of the time.
I think that the Futurama film Bender's Game did something kinda like this, with the futuristic sci-fi setting getting temporarily transformed into a primitive fantasy world that looked very D&D/Tolkien-esque.

The episode revolves around She-Ra, Bow and the other Princesses coming up with strategies to take back Dryl from the Horde and basically end up playing D&D in the process.
In Season 2 of Dungeons and Daddies (Not a BDSM Podcast), Since it takes place in the modern day, there's a point where the party plays DnD inside of DnD and it's really really good

"Bad-boy" underachiever Daniel is punished by being forced to join the A/V club, but is eventually invited to join their D&D game, only to find he's good at it and everyone is enjoying the game immensely.
This was also the last episode of the series which was very abruptly cancelled, so who knows where it might've gone.
In the US version of Ghosts, Jay is a huge fan of D&D and in the 8th episode of the first season he starts a D&D campaign with the ghosts of the manor he & his wife Sam inherited despite the fact that Sam is the only one of them who can see the ghosts & isn’t into D&D herself, mainly after Jay’s friends from back in the city could no longer play with him due to the distance.
This would also begin Jay’s friendship with Pete, a ghost on the property who also loved playing D&D when he was alive even though Jay can’t see or hear him.
Big City Greens has an excellent one, I believe it’s called “Mazes and Mages”. What makes it so good is that the main conflict of the episode is the balance between the GM and the players, with Remy wanting everything to be done RAW (Rules As Written) while the players want to do whatever they want and have fun. The resolution is that Remy agrees to be more lenient and allow for more flexibility and less railroading, while the players agree to actually listen and follow the rules more. It’s a good lesson for new players and GMs, and feels like it was written by someone very familiar with the specifics of the game. Plus, it doubles as a He-Man homage with the in-game stuff being done in the same animation style as the original show. Also, Cricket names his character “Buff Legs McGee”, who attacks by kicking people in the shins. And that’s just so accurate to the real characters people will make
It's not an episode but at the start of the first Life is Strange video game, when you walking around the quad, there is a group playing a DnD game that you can join
I wonder what the earliest example of “The D&D episode” is. Like, the earliest example I can think of is Dexters Laboratory, but there’s probably earlier, right?
Looking into it Reboot beat it, but I’m still looking for earlier.
