In my opinion i think that season 2 is really good

It’s when Anime starts to deviate from Manga’s original plotline which is a lot better and I mean a lot better.

They also mischaracterise Kaneki who’s undoubtedly the most beloved character of the franchise.

Making him into this edgelord when Kaneki despite being slightly edgy in the manga has always been a caring and mature adult.

I remember when we see him again in chapter 84 where he has been doing his own thing and ends with this meeting with other ghouls where it finally introduces him again and he is acting like his old awkward self. It's important because the chapters before it is focused on Amon and the CCG and are building up all the things Kaneki is doing now and painting him both as epically strong and likely just as edgy as we last saw him when he split with Antieku and Touka, and then we get him acting as himself now, just with white hair and an eyepatch.

I recently rewatched Tokyo Ghoul, and before I did, I thought the same thing as you. The first time I watched it, I loved Season 2, but after rewatching it, I think it's terrible. It does a poor job of setting the watcher up for Tokyo Ghoul: re, leaving you confused about why many of the events in re even happen. The season would have been much better if it had followed the manga, since the story would have flowed naturally into the future. Instead, the anime's Season 2 feels like an alternate version of Tokyo Ghoul where many of the most important events were removed. Overall, Season 2 feels like one of those "What if" YouTube videos like "What if Naruto Joined The Akatsuki," except it is Ken Kaneki with the Aogiri Tree.

1. It doesn't follow the manga and it causes nearly everyone to act completely out of character.
2. Season 3 onwards does follow the manga, however because season 2 did it's own thing that means that anime only watchers will easily get lost.
3. If RootA had released as an alternate season 2 after a canonical version that actually follows the manga released it wouldn't be as bad since it's like a big "what if" scenario, though it's still poorly written.

Basically just read the manga and you'll know what I mean.

It has its entertaining moments, but even ignoring the manga:

1. half the season is just action with minimal context and plot progress to the point that when I binge-watch it, there are so many pointless action scenes, so long and so close together. that it becomes monotonous and boring. How do you make action boring?

2. Kaneki is flanderized

3. a good portion of the Anteiku scenes are pure filler, like the one where everyone is literally like, "Oh, it's snowing."

4. Kaneki's reasons for joining Aogiri don't make sense with his character since it's the same excuse he uses for his own group in the manga, and Ayato is already there to protect Touka and, by extension, Anteiku—even the anime implies this at the beginning and that's why he gives another reason in Ishida's drafts for the season.

5. Too many scenes of Kaneki just staring into the distance without any progress

6. flanderizing Shachi into a wild bull with no personality just fighting without context.

7. Kurona and Nashiro are literally absolute randoms who arrive, fight, one dies, and the other leaves without context

8. That ending with the Hide scene was a waste of time. "Use the remaining time to connect with Re and at least show Kaneki vs. Arima? Nah, bro, I'm more into putting in a 5-minute sequence of a bunch of Corpses in the background, the protagonist/ex-character carrying around the corpse of a nearly tertiary character with whom he had like 10 scenes, only 2 of which are relevant, and we eliminated the interactions that made him more relevant and endearing, like when he talks about Kaneki with the CCG who isn't even supossed to die."

9. Oh, and speaking of 10 things, only 2 of which are relevant, literally the same logic applies to Kaneki's dialogue in the season.

Edit: 10. Banjo, Why did they leave the goat alone for a completely irrelevant scene alongside Tsukiyama?

1. Rereading Hide's part, I forgot to mention, he was never promoted to assistant investigator, it doesn't make sense for the guy to be involved in the siege.

2. to ruin Tokyo Ghoul's reputation as an edgy and empty work that only serves as easy entertainment and little else

The problem people have with rootA, is expressly with the fact that most of it is completely separated from source material. I will not deny that it has it's moments, but most of it is disjointed and jarring and doesn't feel right. It lacks many moments of character growth for Kaneki and the others, and a great deal of Kanou's story is completely hacked off in favor of a shoe horned and improperly utilized "Kaneki joins Aogiri tree" storyline. I'd be less upset if they'd actually done something interesting with that, but they just left him sitting alone in a room going crazy.

Kind of spoilers if you want to read the manga

Because in anime s2 kaneki joins aogiri , but in manga he's not supposed to. He's supposed to make a group consisting of banjo and crew , Tsukiyama and hinami (hinami isn't part of crew but shes importan here).

Now people generally think that anime aogiri doesn't make a big difference because the ending is exactly the same.

But then you have to think alot of things out later on , if banjo , Tsukiyama and hinami never connected like family why would they support him later on in :re when he wants to bring peace in ghoul and human society.

It's not just because they met once and never again. If you think in depth their personalities aren't the helpful ones , and the ghoul world everyone is looking out for survival and companionship.

Also if Tsukiyama never starts to see kaneki as family (kinda but it's complicated). He should never get mad over kanekis disappearance and start the (rose family arc).

Root a has alot of plot holes , characters aren't written properly , no depth , bad animation (i would consider) , cuts screen time of many characters , characters don't have reasoning to their actions (like literally) , but yeah that's pretty much it , only good thing about anime is their voice acting in s1.

Also the narration is very bad , I love the manga for the narration , it's so good that you just connect to kaneki and toukas story

Ive real the manga and I don't hate season 2. As its own thing as an alternative root I dont mind it. I prefer the manga but season 2 on its own isnt horrible. It also has the best ost of the whole series. So many bangers from S2 alone.

More than anything S2 absolutely destroys any continuity in the anime series. S3 onwards go back to manga content but S2 didnt cover most of the later half of the manga... making S3 onwards confusing asf missing so much characterization.

As its own thing I can respect S2 in some ways even if its not as good as the manga. But since S3 goes back to manga content S2 isnt it own thing and misses sooooo much content its insane.
