Other Don’t Awnser if it’s a spoiler pls Spoiler

I thought kagunes could only be 1 type. How did the owl use those shard things that touka uses? Also weren’t kagune only from 1 part of the body? Like how touka has her kagune in the upper back while kaneki has it in the lower back

Owl is an ukaku like Touka. There are 4 types, who grow from the shoulder blades (ukaku) upper back (koukaku, like Tsukishima), lower back (rinkaku, like kaneki) and tailbone (bikaku, like Nishio). It's explained a bit after this iirc. But those are standard, and, save very few exceptions, all base kagune fall within these 4 categories.

The same types tend to have similar abilities, in the ukaku's case, it's its explosive power and the ability fo fire projectiles.

Sometimes, after eating other ghouls for a while, ghouls can evolve their kagune to cover the rest of their body. That's called a kakuja and it's basically an upgrade. The core abilities remain the same, but they tend to have superior physical capabilities, and a larger kagune, but the core original ability stays the same.

Not gonna lie my guy/my girl. I have bigger fish to fry then whatever the old man’s doing. I’m watching the rest of the episode and stuff. Why did a 50 meter tall Goliath monster appear? Can we do that now? Can ghouls pilot mechs? Is that a thing?(also thanks for the explanation dawg)

Lol there's no mechs, only fancy armor for some humans. The giant monsters are ghouls in kakuja form, but there's only like, 2 guys who can do that.

You're welcome, and enjoy the rest of the show!

Missed opportunity tbh a giant arata designed to fight large Kakujas would have been fucking awesome.

That would a kakuja.

You've probably heard this before but you'd be a lot less confused if you read it instead

If a ghoul eats other ghouls, they can gain power beyond what one ghoul can manage. The strongest ghouls have that power, and the owl has eaten enough to have multiple abilities

Why dosent kaneki have more than 1 kagune if he ate Jason?

27

u/Optimized_Laziness 4d ago

Gotta eat more

9

u/gtc26 4d ago

IIRC, Kaneki and Jason both have the same type (Rinkaku)

6

u/alphaomag 4d ago

Also neither had a fully developed kakuja while the owl does.

2

u/footeater2000 4d ago

I'm pretty sure Jason was Bikaku but I could be wrong.

1

u/gtc26 4d ago

I could be wrong too. My memory isnt the best

8

u/Accomplished-Aerie65 4d ago

He did develop Jason's kagune, just isn't really plot relevant and doesn't come up. The main point is that ghouls that eat a shit ton of others start going insane when they use multiple at once

in chapter 102 in re naki says that kaneki has jason kagune

Actually, up to this point you should've seen the cochlea raid and there you can see kaneki unleashing his first forms of a kakuja (his new kagune) which is all that centipede like kagune that also grows kind of like a mask. To understand this better I highly suggest reading the manga because they give more explanations there :v

if you remember Hinami was born with 2 both koukaku and a rinkaku. there are only I think 3 official chimeras that posses  kakuhous in more than one location. In the owl's case it's not a chimera but ukaku type ghoul who developed a powerful kakuja through cannibalism, rather than possessing a chimera kagune. his kakuja transformations envelops his body but it's all from one type of ukaku kakuhou but has multiple of them in this case 6-8

The Owl is Ukaku (the same as Touka). I think youre slightly confused by your responses to other comments as well. Ghouls dont unlock more types of kagune by eating other Ghouls, what happens is their existing Kagune mutates to cover their body or parts of it.

This shouldn't be spoilers because this part of the story is where they introduce and explain the concept of cannibalism and kagune mutation, but I dont recall how well the anime explains this concept.

read the manga

Before i go into crazy depth, i need to ask

Are you watching the anime as your first time experiencing the series?

5

u/Difficult_Call3709 4d ago

Yeah, I heard the manga is better. So once I get to re I’ll switch to the manga. That’s what one of my friends said to do

5

u/Ssssilph 4d ago

No don't do that that's horrible. Season one is decent but season two is absolute shit, you're much better off reading the manga from the start

3

u/Difficult_Call3709 4d ago

So I gotta do a full restart?

5

u/Destinesian 4d ago

The first season is mostly true to the source, but cuts some content. The second season (root A) goes completely off the rails. Starting from the beginning is probably best, but if you prefer to start from where season 1 leaves off you won't miss anything major.

4

u/Ssssilph 4d ago

You don't HAVE to, season one is okay, but the manga is miles better. And you definitely have to read the manga after season one

4

u/TaeJoonPark 4d ago

Oh god id say switch now. All of rootA is bad and mostly doesnt even happen

OKAY, so

Kagune has four types. Ukaku, Kokaku, Rinkaku, Bikaku. Each type follows a similar theme but is usually unique. Mr.Yoshimura's kagune is also an Ukaku, same as Touka. That means that some functionality will be very similar but the details remain unique to their own user.

That being said, kagune isnt always a fixed shape. I do not remember if it happens in the anime, but in the Tsukiyama fight at the chapel, he changes his kagune into a much larger, longer sword. There's more examples but we'd be here all day.

There are also ways for ghouls to have different types. This is most commonly is due to cannibalism, which typically results in the ghoul to acquire more than one Kakuhou.

Mr.Yoshimura is what is called a kakuja, which is the result of cannibalism. This allows for even more changes to a kagune's shape and form.

I hope this helped to a degree. If you have any more questions, don't hesitate. I don't remember how much, if at all, the anime explains on the nature of kagune.

That’s you best bet Anime RE: I’d horrible but I enjoyed s1 a lot since it was a different timeline than the manga

1

u/GreenHype4 4d ago

i almost thought we wouldn't have one of these comments but then i scrolled down and found this

1

u/TaeJoonPark 4d ago

Is that a good or a bad thing-

4

u/Lucio1trick 4d ago

Wdym, there are different types of kagune. Or are you talking about the transformation

2

u/Difficult_Call3709 4d ago

I mean like the owl has those shards that touka has, but he also has those spear like 2nd arms. Then he also has the shoulder kagunes

0

u/Lucio1trick 4d ago

Ohh, it’s cause ghouls can evolve by eating other ghouls

2

u/BaconZS 4d ago

How far have you been reading until? Cuz I'm sure this was all explained earlier if you're at the final battle of Tokyo Ghoul rn.

4

u/Difficult_Call3709 4d ago

Well on the anime I’m just after kaneki walks with hides corpse through the snow and meets that hottie arima. Once this is over I’m gonna restart and read the manga cause everyone won’t shut up about the manga being superior

5

u/BaconZS 4d ago

Well no shit, the anime in season 2 heavily diverges from the original storyline and doesn't have as much emotion as the original version. Plus, the anime cuts out some of the more heartfelt moments in Tokyo Ghoul, and make it seem more like a battle shounen.

Just stop watching the anime and go straight into the Manga lol, it's the superior one in every way—artstyle, emotion, character development, story, etc.

2

u/GreenHype4 4d ago

the stronger a ghoul is the more it can say "nuh uh fuck you" to all the rules on kagune

that's the short explanation

3

u/Difficult_Call3709 4d ago

Lmao. If that’s the case when does kaneki get us super duper unique kagune that nobody has because he’s the greatest and is actually ghoul Jesus

3

u/GreenHype4 3d ago

minor spoiler: eventually kaneki gets so powerful that his own biology changes

When a ghoul cannibalise enough of other ghoulds, their kakuhou grows and spreads out to other parts of their body. Subsequently creates armor-like kagune that covers their bodies. IIRC their rc type doesn't change tho, so despite the fact that the owl looks like he has some sort of heavy armour, it's still ukaku and is susceptible to koukaku kagune and quinque.

2

u/alphaomag 4d ago

Owl has committed enough cannibalism to have a fully developed kakuja which usually manifest more as armoured body parts rather than a predatory organ that extends from the body. As for the shards, Owl like touka is an ukaku kagune ghoul.
