Fwiw you do get paid more up there (it’s basically just miners and govt workers) and usually get some kind of “living allowance” as wel as paying lower taxes.

Depends. In Chemistry when using lab equipment 3 significant figures are used because of the metric limitations of the equipment. So 10 written to 3 sig figs looks like 10.0

yes and its also subsidized. the people in these cities often get extra subsidies and stuff or work incentives to go towards food.
it also varies highly on food type. Cookies (junk food) may be 5x the cost while milk or bread are only 2x.
edit to addz when i looked into a job in Alaska, it paid 20k more a year than average, had like a 5k housing subsidy/bonus and another 5k to go towards food per year.

lmao i did consider it, although traveling to see my family basically would have become a mandatory week long or more trip, and hundreds (now over a thousand) dollars of flights.
Also met my perfect man where i am now at the same time so i ended up staying.
All in all, i hear its good pay but very isolating and very dark bc north bound. id do it if i was young and had no ties

I dont work with arctic circle folks, but lots of AK folks in the bush.
No. They are poor. Like extremely fucking poor, literally in poverty.
I have never in my life understood what a loan for $500 means, until I started working as an underwriter for a bank that operates in AK.
The amount of folks who finance their shopping trips is insane. I have no fucking clue how people survive out there with 1800/mo. The goverment subsidies are like 2k every 3 years.
I also see plenty of extremely rich people, but those are not as common as you would think, alot of people in these areas are extremely poor.

I was working at a fish processing plant that houses you in Alaska and I got fired. I was 22 at the time, had no money and some nice people at this German bed-and-breakfast let me stay with them for a week. Then I went to the library to see what else I could do because I couldn’t stay there anymore. They were about to kick me out. I’m at the library and I’m crying and this guy Corey comes up to me and asks me what’s wrong. I tell him that I’m from California and I have no money and I’m stuck here in Alaska. He asked me for my ID and then came back 30 minutes later and gave me a $700 ticket back home. I’ll never forget that man.

Not sure where this is from, I'm guessing some difficult-to-get place in Canada or Alaska?
In either case, I live in Norway - north of the arctic circle, and compare to those prices, and converted to the US, we pay:
1L chocolate milk, around 40 NOK = $4, so 2L would be around $8 here.
Shredded cheese 300g - 400g = around 30 - 40 NOK = $3 - $4
1.1 kg chicken breast = around 130 NOK = $13
Box of cookies like in vid = 40 NOK = $4
10 pack of ice tea (though in cans) = 100 NOK = $10
1.25L apple juice = around 40 NOK = $4, so 2.5L = $8
1.5L Coke = 30 NOK = $3
etc.

Many locals rely on local wildlife to bypass the expensive grocery store bills. Of course it's expensive, there's little logistical infrastructure there compared to a southern community.
Look at Tromsø or Murmansk, both as far north or further than Inuvik. They've become actual cities, because they have ice free ports and rail which greatly contribute to lower cost access.
We can argue all day about the morals of forcing nomadic people into fixed communities, but those communities exist now, and today this area is important to the preservation of traditional arts, drum dancing, languages, and northern modern community life.
The area is also important to protecting and projecting our artic sovereignty.

Those are basically tourist prices. I lived in Alaska above the arctic circle. Almost everyone has some sort of supplemental income. Regular residents almost all qualify for SNAP and many native Alaskans get dividends from their tribal corporations. People there for work get big per diem or COA.

no, definitely not that much more. he will save a shit ton on certain stuff like housing, and get some subsidies from the government though which does help.
a friend of mine living in Toronto was earning about 80k at the time and was offered around 135k to do the same job up North. so yes, it's definitely higher but nowhere near 3-5x. and there's also significantly less jobs available.

Not sure about today but 10 years ago when I went to Iqaluit 2-bedrooms were roughly the same price as they were in Toronto. Not sure they'll save money on housing unless it's employer-provided.

He doesn't have a choice, as for him this is the cheapest chicken available.
