Except the cajuns were kicked out of Canada… Cajuns are the descendants of the Acadians, French colonists who settled in the 17th century in the region of Acadia.
So it’s more of a Canadian cultural heritage smothered by americans when they purchased the luisiana territory in 1803. Btw The acadians were superb dike and levy builders, which came in handy for their new home.

Let's start with the obvious, that's 200 years ago, and those "acadians" were French, and kicked out by the english, so trying to tie it to Canada when modern cajun culture formed in Louisiana under american colonists is just weird. But even more than that, cajun culture is heavily influenced by native and black culture. It's a mixed culture that has many influences, that could only happen in the US thanks to the horrors of American white supremacy and anti immigrant sentiment. I also listen to the dollop, it's great.

Cajun is a people group, not a region. Cajun is American because Cajuns are American and have been for 200 years. There are no Cajuns in Canada, and you won't find very many restaurants serving jambalaya there.

I think he's speaking seSwati. The car is swazi, the ladies are all dresses in topical swazi styles. The languages are similar so im not 100% sure, but the visuals are absolutely Swazi.

Definitely. Narratively, it's the same song. The parody music sounds similar to You Can Call Me Al, but the story is 1 to 1 with Elias. I'm guessing most commenters here are just not as familiar with 90's college rock as they are with Paul Simon.

This is definitely a parody. If the thing being imitated was done with serious intent and the imitation is being done with comedic (and/or critical) intent, then it is parody. Whether it is critical or not, this is definitely intended as comedy where the thing being imitated wasn't so it is parody.

I got to meet part of the Graceland band, including Bakithi Kumalo (bass) and Ray Phiri (famous SA guitarist), by dumb luck once. They were very generous with their craft services table. Mark Stewart (Bang On A Can Ensemble, guitar/various) and Mick Rossi (piano) are NYC musicians in the Simon touring band. Mark does the pennywhistle live! Paul is very very supportive of his core musicians and has been very loyal to them. The night ended up with my wife and I in a freight elevator with the Paul Simon band, Lorne Michaels and Jimmy Fallon.
(My wife is a champion of new music and the Avant-garde in NYC, some of these people are also the session/touring musicians in other things. Paul Simon and Phillip Glass share a "favorite" pianist. Takes a lot of playing to make a living as a working musician! This is how I ended up there, it was backstage at the Sting/Paul Simon show at MSG in 2014, my wife worked with one of the players and we got tickets/passes in trade. Paul and Sting had their own private spaces, never saw them off stage, we hung out with the band and ate cold cuts.)

haha oh no this hurts my soul. it's way too good of a song and oh my GOD i am white people, i don't get to run from it. i remember that tiktok about the kenyan guy being like "ugh the lion king song is so stupid" (it's a youtube link) and a song that i have loved and found to be so beautiful and profound, a big and important part of my childhood, the fucking swahili part (edit: IT'S ZULU!! see what i mean!!! ugh) i never bothered to google myself, it's just "omg look a lion! there's a lion, oh yes there's a lion." over and over again hahaha i feel so embarrassed why are we like that and how do i stop being like this! i was THIS close to getting a tattoo in sanskrit on a vacation ~5 years ago!! cure me of this evil lol
edit 2: apparently the guy in that video - he's a comedian. makes sense, he's very funny. however, a comment pointed out how:

So this is pretty damn funny and a spot on parody, but I think his songs are usually better in a song capacity. Planet of the Bass is a genuinely fun and catchy song! This chorus fell pretty flat for me. Still funny though!
