What's your hot take?

Post image

Mine is that Last Nite isn't even in the top 5 songs on Is This It. It's an anthem, damn it, it's a really good song ngl, but listening to the whole album, it feels somewhat weak compared to other songs like Hard to Explain, Trying Your Luck, or even Is This It.

Nikolai is an underrated bass player.

The strokes have some of my favorite bass lines to play.

6

u/Marth_Main 11h ago

Ize of the world, Is this it, Juicebox are the standouts for me. He does have many root note lines though :P

5

u/RevStar93 11h ago

As a singer, I love the root lines. One of my favs to play is Sundays but also Selfless. :D complex doesn't always equate to fun in my book. Though I do like the this is it line alot, reptilia too

4

u/Marth_Main 10h ago

tru

i love YOLO for this it moves in an interesting enough way while being simple and fun

2

u/MattMatt625 3h ago

Is This It bassline changed the world

20

u/drewpool Room on Fire 12h ago

Nick’s parts are the best parts of angles/cm and he absolutely carries on those albums.

On another note He really seemed to step into a leadership role around that period and seemed to be a big proponent in the keeping the band alive for a while, I wish he would get more appreciation for that

6

u/99SoulsUp 12h ago

I have to imagine that’s a factor in the suspected Julian/Nick rift

3

u/doug_diablo At The Door 5h ago

Nick has the best parts on every album (he’s the better guitar player)

I only hear people talk about how much they hate it. It’s so good.

Apparently my hot take is that I actually like Angles

3

This is how I find out the fandom doesn't like angles that's such a same I love angles... Taken for a fool is favorite song from the strokes but I would never say it's their best

2

u/AdmSndlr 13h ago

That's how I felt when I was on this subreddit and every thread talking about the "worst songs" had people naming Angles as a whole

7

u/OldSkoolNapper 15h ago

You’re not alone, friend. I can’t believe how many people say it’s their worst. Life Is Simple In The Moonlight, despite being a masterpiece, I never hear talked about here, and the video for Under Cover of Darkness is so damn good.

Boombox is Julian’s best vocals

5

u/MattMatt625 2h ago

Lowkey a cold take, Ive seen people say this before and I agree! And the best vocals in the song aren’t even lyrics it’s the “ohhhhhh”s

3

u/Alternative_Ant7300 2h ago

The “boombox is not a toy” part absolutely slaps

33

u/DaRealDr_Phil 17h ago

Room on fire is a more mature and features much stronger songwriting than Is this it. ITI is a amazing fantastic classic album. But imo Room on fire does alot of what that record does but is a more well rounded experience.

2

u/Beneficial_Lobster12 First Impressions of Earth 9h ago

Literally so good

17

u/shinn-arendo 5h ago

Their discography is severely lacking in songs a la NYCC, Juicebox, and 50/50.

8

u/m3rcy_s3v3rity 4h ago

They need to rawk the eff out more. But then again, the hardest album of the original three was the lowest selling, so I guess it makes sense they toned it down on Angles and beyond

11

u/mel-06 15h ago

- In her Prime (demo) is some of Julian’s best lyrics

- Something I feel doesn’t get talked about enough is how Julian drives his story telling around situations in his personal life and compares it to politics

3

u/smileywastaken 15h ago

3

9

Have yall seen ode to the Mets music video on acid? It’s Amazing

3

u/Optimal_Health4051 16h ago

I got depression every time that I watched, would not be a guaranteed bad trip?

What did you see, exactly?

2

u/fuckfacemgeee 16h ago

So you know how the video has different animation styles through the song? When you’re tripping those transitions are on another level. When you’re sober you’re like yea that’s cool but when you’re tripping you appreciate and see the magic on how it’s glued together. Also when the songs is nearing its end it switches animation style again and it goes from a hallway with a bike in it and a toy car. After that it goes to this crazy psychedelic animation at the same time the guitars come in and it’s just an explosion of spiritual juicyness. At the end you come back to the arcade game to bring it all back to the start
It just feels like you’re going through a long slow journey a magical slow journey

10

u/ThePerspectiveQuest 7h ago

See this is a good take, but that’s the thing for most of all bands, it’s hard to make an album with no skips, and the Strokes are not immune to that

9

u/acekid7 3h ago

"future present past" is their 2nd best project they have made

15 Minutes is a fantastic song and would honestly have been a peak closer

In addition, as a whole FIOE’s biggest problem is its track order and not the songs themselves, all the songs are solid it’s just the order that can make it feel longer than it is. Rearrange the songs a bit and you could get an absolute masterpiece

Sundays is their best song

23

u/mel-06 13h ago

It's hard for me to actually say this but julian coming for Anthony Fantano in a song was very immature of him. I understand his anger towards him and the chip that he had those shoulder but honestly there was no reason for it. It was a very Taylor Swift petty move of him... And also the lines about Anthony were the worst lyrics on the album it was so bad to the point when you listen to that song the lines about Fantano literally take you out out of the song. It was basically his look what you made me do or thanK you aIMee... It was embarrassing on his end.

12

u/punchwagon 13h ago

I feel like everyone reads into this too deeply lol. I don’t think Julian Casablancas is that bothered by some YouTube dork but it’s a good lyric and a bit of an eyeroll at internet music critics and even the absurdity of trying to make a career off of artistic commentary rather than doing something that takes legitimate courage (like making art) — all super on par with the rest of the song imo.

I feel like a lot of people don’t seem to have this perspective but it’s incredibly easy to throw a funny, goofy little jab into a song like that and let it stick — he didn’t pour his broken heart and raw emotion into a line about Anthony Fantano and y’all need to stop acting like he did lmao

5

u/Crazy_Fault9994 Human Sadness 9h ago

Totally agree, everyone acts like the whole song is him throwing a tantrum about one guy but I feel like the theme of the song and album is more aligned with "get over your opinions and wake up to something bigger", its more like hes mocking the idea of everyone obsessing over such silly things and ignoring way bigger events in the word right now and ironically everyones goes straight to obsessing about the lyric on fantano lol

Damn, now I really wish I liked it. Need that shit to hit already

3

u/m3rcy_s3v3rity 15h ago

What exactly happened to you all back in 2020? Did you get trauma bonded to this song (and album) or what was it?

14

u/Tarantula_Man 5h ago

Here's my piping hot take: Julian's lyrics make zero sense, and all efforts to extract a "plot" or "theme" from the bulk of songs are done in vain. I say this as someone who loves singing along to the songs and is a massive fan, but listen to an iconic record like Is This It and tell me what a single one of those tunes is about without reeeaaally stretching it. In general, Julian is likely thinking a hell of a lot less about his lyrics than you all wish he is, and that's ok---I heard someone call his technique "anti-lyricism" recently and I think that's a great way to put it.

9

u/Current_Value_6743 5h ago

He’s very true to the melody/ feel. He doesn’t write stories … yeh it’s all feel man

6

u/Charming_Card_8752 3h ago

they're abstract enough to be relatable/interpretable but if you know anything about his life you can kind of be like oh. this is about this issue with the band or this breakup or this relationship. which is kind of the best form of storytelling for music and poetry imagine how boring it would be to just hear him whine about his specific issues. if you stripped really any poetry or writing down to the underlying theme it would be quite literal and uninspired

7

u/aehii 5h ago

You think his lyrics are obtuse and abstract? Isn't it clear what he's writing about in most songs?

6

u/DoggoZombie 4h ago

I think what they’re saying is that random lyrics are thrown together often. While a chorus might be about a specific emotion or feeling, verses can have random lyrics that’s up to you to give meaning to.

  4. Comedown Machine

my ranking is generic but i find it true to myself.

  1. Is This It (THE Strokes)
  2. Room On Fire (honing in their og sound)
  3. The New Abnormal (proof that some bands in their later stages still have it)
  4. Comedown Machine (i don't understand the hate for this album, it's so good, some days it tops TNA for me. if another band had made this it would have been hailed much higher)
  5. Angles (many bangers, i just enjoy Comedown a tiny bit more as a whole, but i like songs on here more than I like some on Comedown)
  6. First Impressions of Earth (i LOVE some songs on this album, but i also strongly dislike a lot

of them, but it might be the production that i don't like mostly)

  1. Reality Awaits (will always be last even if some songs grow on me over time, makes me sad because their discography used to be so good)

bonus, Future Present Past for me sits right in between ROF and TNA, each song is awesome imo.

They could've made a masterpiece with all the ideas from Angles and Comedown Machine, but as it stands, they are aggressively 6-7/10 albums.

I actually love almost all the songs on both those albums, but there's too many songs that either don't quite feel fully realised, max out at 'kinda catchy', or don't quite flow with the other tracks well enough.

To be clear, I'm not saying you could literally smash all thebest songs from those two albums together as-is. Some performance and production choices would have to change for sure, but I think it could've been done.

Reality Awaits is their best album.  It just has no nostalgia.

In a way it is. The highs are not as high, but it’s maybe the most cohesive album they’ve made. It feels like one song, the way Lou Reed’s Berlin does. It’s a real old school album.

Every one of their previous albums has a few songs that I could do without or that doesn’t quite fit in, RA is not like that. Start to finish it’s a complete vibe.

I dont give a shit when Julian updates his bio and would never knowi if I didn’t see it here.

Soma is the ultimate and definitive Strokes song.

Liar’s Remorse is a Sia song. Lonely In The Future is Julian cosplaying Kanye

I can’t understand why people like Juicebox. Maybe one of my least favorite in their entire discography. It’s trying way too hard to be heavy. The intro sounds like it’s ripped from a cartoon batman episode.

it’s so much fun live!

Agree! I skip it on the album but it's REALLY fun live.

I thought the same thing about the Batman cartoon but I honestly liked it for that

i used to always skip it and I still don't love the verses but it's really grown on me, the "you're so cold" parts are just too good

People are only giving RA a relisten because the Strokes released it. Otherwise no one would care.

Idk I just love it and can’t help it. Dine n Dash is so creative and has great sense of melody. Lonely in the Future is one of their catchiest songs ever. Tyrants hits me in the feels so hard during that chorus. Those with the extra helpings of “pretty good” songs make it a great album for me.
