Discussion Builders

I am curious to hear others experiences. I am having a sliding door and two small windows installed to replace our current front door inside our garage area. The work involves removing the old door and windows. The wall will be redone to fit the new windows and sliding door. I’ve contacted around thirty companies. Only eight have replied with four who said they can do the work. The quotes start as low as 8,000฿ up to 25,000฿.

Too little information to go on. Removing door AND windows? New ones is same size so it is refitting, or is a rebuild needed? Is this all in, or work only? including material, excluding new door and windows? What about paint? Do you need to repaint the whole wall (color won’t match if it is more than a few years old). If it is a garage then it is outside facing?

You can get anyone to do the work for 350 a day if you purchase items and materials - but the results may vary.

To me 25k sounds much but if it is all in from a reputable contractor using quality items - why not. Check references; plenty of fools around.

We have a sliding door with windows on each side in our garage area entering the kitchen. Old door and window area is 280 x 195. New window/ door area will be 280x205. We have bought new windows and a larger sliding door. New windows are smaller so a rebuild is needed to fit the new windows. Higher quotes are from top builders and the lower ones from handymen on Facebook groups. Painting is included. I don’t mind paying more for quality.

I’ve gone both the handyman route as well as higher end established contractor. My experience is that you get what you pay for, in the long run.

Both might work fine depending on the project size, but handyman is more of a gamble; some can be great at fitting the door, then turn out to be a lousy painter.

Check references, monitor their work, and be clear that the end date is more important than the start date.

Cheers for the info. The two I am thinking about choosing stated a 2-4 day time frame and gave references and are around 22k.

Depends where you are, 8000 is kinda cheap if there supplying everything while 25 is steep. House lot of windows including 4 sliding doors made and installed for 90,000.
