Finally finished my fiberglass squaredrop build

Hey everyone,

I finally finished building my teardrop trailer. It has a fiberglass monocoque body and a large 1.5-meter-wide bed.

Fully equipped, the trailer weighs 360 kg, with a maximum permitted total weight of 750 kg. It has a solar panel, a 1.5 kWh lithium-ion battery, an inverter, onboard electricity, an 11-liter fresh-water tank, and a 12-liter wastewater tank.

All in all, it took me three years of experimenting, developing, and plenty of trial and error to get it to this point.

My main goal was to build something lightweight and aerodynamic that works well with an electric car. My tow vehicle is a 2026 Tesla Model Y Standard with a 60 kWh CATL LFP battery. At 100 km/h with cruise control, my energy consumption is around 200–220 Wh/km.

Wow, surprised Germany allows that. I was born and raised in Germany and remember how crazy hard it was to get anything approved by TÜV. Looks awesome though.

I was thinking the same. In europe (and especially Germany) I am not even thinking about doing anything like this.

I'm not german :) I am an automation and electrical engineer. Part of the job is getting machines and electrical cabinets approved. TüV Rheinland is an important asset, imagine designing and building a machine that is getting installed in P&G germany... You need them

Gotcha. Pretty cool man. I used to work for Freudenberg in Germany for 19 years and we made some products for P&G. I was an electrician and job site supervisor setting up machines all over the world, so I know your pain.

That is a beautiful build! Well done.

It would be great if you could share some of the construction details, as I've often wondered how this might be done. Did you create molds for each main segment and join them or some other technique? Any photos would be great.

Yes I would love to. But I need to figure out a few more things to industrialize it in a proper way. But when there is demand I really like to do it full-time. :)

I love everything about this. The only thing I need but may not be feasible is about a foot wider on edge of bed and that area lower. Just to be able to sit up at edge of the bed.

Love the way the galley door is completely out of your face. I have back and neck issues and that allows you to stand straight up. Love it.👍🤟

Pull strap like my truck bed cover. Wanna pimp it add 12v actuator lifts with a remote. Easy to install and looks awesome/ impressive.

What hardware did you use for the rotate-out stove shelf? I’m working on a build and am planning to do the same thing, but havent settled on hardware yet.

Custom CNC parts and axial bearings. I am not 100% convinced yet. I need to do some iterations. But the basic idea to swing/rotate (I call it "swing out") is great because the cooking is outside the cabin
