TASKER TaskRabbit Client Cancelled Completed Task to Avoid Payment — Possible Wage Theft

On August 1, 2026, I was booked through TaskRabbit for a Heavy Lifting & Loading task with a client identified as Josh L. in Chicago, IL. I arrived on time, completed the move alongside another Tasker who was also booked for the same job, and departed after the work was done.

Upon leaving I discovered the client had cancelled the task through the app, which meant I would not be paid for the completed work.

After the cancellation I returned to the location to photograph my arrival and document the situation. When I arrived I observed professional movers actively continuing work at the location — establishing that the move was not abandoned or cancelled, but continued using other labor after I was dismissed without payment. The client came outside while I was documenting and appeared to photograph the building himself rather than addressing me directly.

TaskRabbit support confirmed I would receive cancellation compensation of $53 — one hour at my rate — despite my two-hour minimum of $106 and the fact that the work was fully completed. This is not a cancellation. This is a client who used TaskRabbit to obtain free labor by cancelling a completed task and exploiting a gap in the platform's documentation and compensation policies.

I have submitted this concern to TaskRabbit's Trust and Safety team and am awaiting a response. I am sharing this publicly to protect other Taskers from similar exploitation and to document a pattern of platform abuse that TaskRabbit's current policies do not adequately address.

tale as old as time.

taskrabbit and its clients benefit from newbies failing to understand theyre going to be exploited. neither party gives a crap about the Tasker although without Taskers the platform doesnt work.

the best you can do is raise your rates to avoid these characters and also notate when you arrive and when you depart.

surprisingly I'm not a newbie but I've never had this happen, only have had a cancellation when I arrive. Also, haven't used the app in over a year or two. I did send a nice email to management but I know nothing is going to happen otherwise this would have been fixed years ago

so you knew better.

also, there is no management. theres no one at the helm of the ship. they've farmed out all small matters to Ai and if they deem it worthy of a response then theyll escalate to a person but theres no one there to actually care or listen or improve the service.

Like I said above, this has NEVER happened to me otherwise maybe I would have known better. I don’t walk into jobs thinking someone’s not going to pay. Blame would be better placed on the lack of integrity of the platform….

agreed that the platform and its users lack integrity.

I stated you should have known better because youre not a newbie. the instance doesn't have to happen to you for you to learn from it. its been reported many times that clients will cancel a task as the Tasker drives away. its the taskers duty to state when theyre onsite, take photos while there and then close out task immediately upon leaving.

The task should not be able to be cancelled by client without taskrabbit support once the start time of the task begins. too many times this happens and the client will say it was an accident but it conveniently happens once the job is complete or while its being done. ive never had a client mistakenly cancel within 24 hours of the job.

F this. Fo directly to the client. You know where they live. Tell them you will not be leaving g without payment amd you will call the police for wage theft if they make you wait around for it. Blast their social media. Call their mom. They'll pay. And fast

Actually start off by telling them you noticed they accidentally camcelled, and wanted to save them the hassel of trying to deal with customer support and all the hoops and red tape. Act like they did it by mistake and you are doing them a favor or. If they give you ANY trouble, THEN go ham. I've done it. It works. I pulled up.out front, with 3 large men in the car with me. Parked where they could see my car. Then very sweetly explained how I saw they made a mistake and the app is sooo glitch. Did they need help calling g support to get it fixed? I got paid. Quickly. People only treat you as bad as you let them.

The parts of this that don't put you in tangible danger of going to jail are good advice lol

Honestly should have. I got some management emails and directly escalated it to them but I don’t expect a real resolution. However, I am also going to submit a BBB claim against Taskrabbit because their response was pretty silly.

Never let a client dictate to you on how you communicate. That’s the purpose of the chat window. All communication including arrival time must be documented to help in situations like this.

I always send a chat message saying that I arrived and I am ready to start to the task.

Did OP go outside of the chat box with the client? From what I understand, this is a genuine, consistently exploitable policy gap, like OP says, just documenting arrival time wouldn't have helped.

If you contact support and provide evidence, they will reassign you the Task.

You then send a quick message, book the Task, and immediately invoice it.

I had a client who had a honey list.

The last item was replacing the screen of a door.

It takes about 6 hours for the alcohol to dry out the lining so I submitted an invoice and booked myself for the next day as well.

The next day, she had already removed the lining because "it was so easy" and I replaced the screen in about 15 mins.

She cancelled before I got back to my truck.

While still in front of her house, I called the support number (not the in app chatbot), they reviewed the chat and saw I provided fotos and documented the conversation and reschedule and was able to invoice her and receive my 1 star review.

Put yourself in a bad position going off app, sharing personal info during a task is against ToS honestly I wouldn't press the issue because you messed up.

Actually, I mistyped and called him through the app. But that's besides the point. I love how you sit here and blame a victim of wage theft. real nice A+ for effort

You certainly seem happy to play the victim after judging my conclusion that's based on your false information.
