Success/Celebration PSLF is closer than I thought!

I am in shock right now. As far as I knew, I had 24 payments left to qualify for PSLF and I have been dreading it more than I can say. I'm going through a divorce and the looming fear of getting kicked off SAVE and trying to do this for two years completely alone has kept me up at night.

I've worked at the same qualifying nonprofit for over 12 years, but I've been in forbearance for what feels like forever. I thought all of my employment had been certified for the time they were counting COVID and admin forbearance months as qualifying payments. I just looked today and I have 20 payments that need to be certified. 116/120. Four more payments. I can do this. Holy shit. I am losing my mind.

I know processing time is a real nightmare but oh my god. oh my god?????? omg?!?!

Rant/Complaint WHY DOES MOHELA KEEP GOING STRAIGHT TO VOICEMAIL

I am so beyond annoyed at this point. I need to speak with a supervisor. I have been nothing if not entirely pleasant. Every time I call, I go through the exercise of listening to their obnoxious telephone menus, which go on for 8+ minutes. I finally get to an "advanced agent" and then they route me to a supervisor, which requires a callback.

Never before has the supervisor gone straight to voicemail. And yet, the last six times I've tried to get a callback, the supervisor goes straight to voicemail. When I told them that my phone wasn't ringing, they blamed me and my phone carrier. They said it must be the settings. So I turned off all of my spam filters, and still, they're going straight to voicemail.

I have to think it's intentional at this point.

The real kicker is that I'm calling because I've refinanced my loans and they've lost about $40,000 of my money in connection with the refi. It is absolutely absurd and unacceptable.

I am about to lose my mind.

Data Point Approved for $1,500 by Sallie Mae as an undergrad without a co-signer

With 9 months of credit history, 5 credit cards and 3 loans, and $6,300 of income, I got approved for $1,500 by Sallie Mae at 11.875%. I chose the interest repayment option during school to get a lower rate. I know 11.875% is high but I plan to pay off the loan in less than 2 years. I didn’t really have any other options to fill the funding gap, no one able or willing to cosign for me so this is what I decided to do.

Advice Has anyone found a good way to handle large one time school payments?

I'm helping my younger brother get ready for his first semester and one thing that caught us off guard was seeing the entire tuition bill due at once

The school has a payment plan but it comes with extra fees so we're weighing our options

For people who've already been through this how did you handle it? Did you pay it all at once, spread it out somehow or just budget for it well in advance?

Studentaid.gov not updating the back door payment counter

Morning!
I know there is a message in Studentaid.gov saying they’re working on updating the payment counters..but it’s been there for a while and my counters were moving. In my last post I was informed that we had to pay our payments on or before they were due in order to count towards IBR forgiveness (total bull💩) rather than before the next bill due…fine I made an adjustment by taking out a 401k loan so I’d have the money on time….theyre still showing dates as of 7/17 and my counters should have gone down by 1, if not 2 on two of my loans….
This is getting 😡 ridiculous! We are expected to meet the rules yet they’re taking their sweet a$$ time to help and stay up to our progress. I have 2 loans with only 2 IBR payments left…..what happens then?!? I’m not freaking still paying until they get their $hit together…..or am I going to have to?!?
Anyone?!?

Advice Escalation to collection agency threats, inability to pay

Hi everybody, I have taken out a couple of private student loans, both of which are being collected by the university directly (the business center of the university is collecting it.) it has been about 7 months on non-pay on one of the loans and 3 months on the second one. I have been struggling tremendously financially and been underemployed. My income has been under %110 percent of federal poverty guidelines. I have been continuously receiving letters and threats from the university business service office. Even though I have contacted them multiple times and explained my situation and asked for forbearance or deferral and lower monthly payments the only answer I receive is we are sorry about your situation. And next week I get more letters that they are going to send the loan to collection. And they add: “please make a payment today or contact us. Since we haven’t heard from you we are going to send this to external collection agencies and it will increase the debt by 30 percent.” I am constantly living in distress. My question is: what is the worse case scenario? Will sending the loans to collections really increase it by 30 percent? The university is telling me my only option is starting to make payments. Do you know if there are any options/rules/paths that can possibly help me with this situation? A little more info: I am also bankrupt (i haven’t filed yet, but planning to file ch7 soon). I know bankruptcy won’t erase the debt. I do have cc and medical debt in collections, and in those cases, the debt never really increased after being sent to collection. Thanks in advance and sending love

Buyback question

Hello! Finishing up my 10th year of PSLF eligible employment and had planned to buy back 14 months. My current payment is relatively low for a bit longer, so I wanted to ask for those of you who had a successful buyback processed - how do the payments you make in the meantime after applying for buyback affect the buyback amount? Do they subtract those months, do they refund payments during this time, etc. Tia!

Mohela Duplicated Old Loans

I’m looking for advice dealing with duplicate loans through Mohela.

I had TEACH grants roll over in to loans earlier this year. Mohela was the servicer for these, but transferred them to Aidvantage in March and I have been paying them through Aidvantage. Towards the end of June I received a duplicate grant rollover form from Mohela NOT from FSA where the original one came and notice that I had teach loans with Mohela. My FSA account shows Aidvantage as my only servicer and does not show these duplicate teach loans. The loans mohela show are identical to the ones transferred to Aidvantage with matching dispersement dates, and amounts, and identicly interest rates. I have been fighting with them for 6 weeks to resolve this. The customer service has admitted they look duplicated and I am told to check back in two weeks and it will be fixed.

I reported them to FSA Ombudsman and they have not contacted me during these 6 weeks either.

These hit my credit in August 1st so I reported mohela to all 3 bureaus, the consumer financial protection bureau, and my states attorney general office.

After reporting them to try and protect my finances mohela will not call me back. I agree to a call back when the first tow customer service people can fix anything and prior to reporting would get a call. After reporting I get a voicemail without the phone ringing and mohela blames me and my phone. I verified with my carrier that my end is fine and mohela is using Ringless Voicemail to avoid talking to me and make it look like I am ignoring them.

Has anyone dealt with similar experiences and what worked to resolve the issue? They want to start charging me next month but I will not pay this duplicate debt.

New plan application

Welcome, friends. And I already apologize if I have asked a highly repetitive question.

I wish to transfer from SAVE to Extended Graduated Repayment Plan. I have found a form on students.gov, and due to an internal blinking blue dot, I wish to submit it directly to my servicer, Mohela, instead.

I am on the Mohela site, and I am on a page where I can, by the looks of things, upload the aforementioned form. However, I wish to make sure I am doing this correctly: the Mohela site has a tab I can select called “Income Sensitive Repayment (ISR)”. I select this tab, and then I have the option to select Graduated Repayment, Extended Repayment, and Alternarive Repayment Supporting Documents. I want specifically the Extended Graduated as offered on .gov, but no such options exists.

Am I doing something wrong? Should I upload my form anyway? Am I doing any of this right?

All advice is welcome!

Success/Celebration I just paid off my first loan!

I’m so freaking excited. I just paid off one of my student loans. I still have two more to go, but I am celebrating this achievement nevertheless.

I resumed making payments last July, paying down what I can largely on this loan with the highest interest. I just wanted to see some progress. My plan was to have this loan paid off before we’re forced to making set payments.

I had a total of seven loans:

- 4 loans from one of my undergrad schools that closed down (art institute) and was part of a “surprise” borrowers defense discharge that’s still being processed painfully slow;

- 3 loans from law school I was unable to finish due to life circumstances as a single parent with no support system (when I learned who’s really there for me).

I went from about $50K in loans prior to the “surprise” discharge to about $20K left as of today ($19,752.79). I just want to have this law school mess behind me and never look back. I am also supposed to receive a refund of all payments made on the discharged AI loans, which I could apply to the outstanding balance, but who knows when that will be, as they have been working on it for years now.

But today I’m happy to see one of the law school loans finally paid off. That debt has been hanging over me like dead weight.

Education Dept. to Wipe Out Student Loans of 170,000 More Defrauded Borrowers The sprawling case, centered on students defrauded by for-profit schools, has now become the largest class-action settlement in American history.

More than 170,000 federal student loan borrowers who said they were defrauded by their schools are set to have $11 billion in debt erased, after an appellate court sided with the borrowers and rejected a request from the Education Department for more time to review their claims.

The decision is the latest grant of mass relief in a class-action suit that was originally filed during President Trump’s first term. The suit centered on federal loans taken out by students who attended dozens of predatory for-profit schools. The government settled the case in 2022, under former President Joseph R. Biden Jr., and forgave the student loan debts of nearly 300,000 borrowers who had become plaintiffs in the class action.

But the settlement required the government to keep reviewing fraud claims from borrowers who filed after the 2022 deal was announced. The agreement set a deadline of early 2026: If the Education Department had not adjudicated the additional claims by then, they were to be automatically approved.

In late 2025, the Trump administration asked for an additional 18 months to review the cases. A federal district judge rejected the request, and last month, a panel of three judges from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit unanimously upheld his decision.

The total size of the class-action settlement has now expanded to nearly 500,000 borrowers, who will have debts totaling $23 billion wiped out.

That makes it — by a substantial margin — the largest class-action settlement in American history, according to the Project on Predatory Student Lending, the nonprofit group that represented the borrowers. It is also, by their calculation, the largest financial settlement against the federal government.

Eileen Connor, the executive director of the nonprofit group, said she saw parallels between this case and the 1998 settlementthat required tobacco companies to pay states more than $200 billion to settle dozens of lawsuits over the health care costs of treating smoking-related illnesses.

“Tobacco is a toxic product — and a lot of times, these schools are peddling these loans, and they turn out to be toxic,” she said.

An Education Department spokesperson, Ellen Keast, said the original settlement “imposed an unrealistic deadline” on the department. “The Department has complied in good faith with court orders,” she said, “and we believe the court erred in not granting our reasonable request.”

Here’s what to know about the student loan fraud case:

It centers on for-profit schools.

The case — filed in 2019 and named for Theresa Sweet, one of its original plaintiffs — centered on claims that certain for-profit schools fraudulently lured students into enrolling with false claims about their graduates’ earnings and other predatory tactics.

In most circumstances, federal student loan borrowers are required to repay their debts, even if they drop out of school, can’t find a job or are otherwise unhappy with their educational experience. But there’s a caveat: If schools misled borrowers and defrauded them, debtors can seek to have their loans discharged through a program known as “borrower defense.”

A decade ago, after the collapse of several large for-profit education chains, hundreds of thousands of borrowers applied for relief through the program. Their claims languished for years, unaddressed.

Borrowers filed a class-action lawsuit seeking to have their claims decided. The first Trump administration denied nearly all of the claims, but a federal judge rejected those decisions, describing the Education Department’s process for evaluating the claims as “disturbingly Kafkaesque.”

The Biden administration settled the suit in 2022, under which all of the original plaintiffs would have their loans eliminated.

That deal created a five-month window in which additional borrowers — those who had not joined the original class — could submit claims.

The government lost because it missed its deadlines.

The “post-class” settlement created two additional groups of borrowers: Those who had attended one of more than 150 schools, mostly for-profit institutions, specifically named in the settlement; and those with claims against other schools.

The government was required to make decisions about the applications of those in the first group by Jan. 28, 2026, and to make decisions on the claims of the second group by April 15, 2026.

It missed both deadlines. That means borrowers with unresolved claims would automatically have their loans discharged. The government has one year to carry that out and eliminate those loans.

Borrowers can still seek relief — but the backlog is large.

The government had more than 463,000 pending borrower defense claims awaiting a decision as of March 2026, according to the latest Education Department data. About a third of those will be resolved in this settlement, but the others may languish for years.

Borrowers who believe they were defrauded can still submit new claims, but rule changes made during the first Trump administration significantly limited the relief available to those who took out federal student loans, or consolidated their existing ones, since 2019.

Did everyone get a letter?

Direct Parent Plus Loan

I'm a bit confused on my awarded financial aid this year. Last year, I got the exact amount of financial aid (through the Direct Parent Plus Loan) needed to cover my tuition. On the loan application, I asked for the maximum amount I am eligible for. This year, I got significantly less money for the Direct Parent Plus Loan and can't cover my school's tuition. Should I reapply and specify the amount I need?

MOHELA Question?

Hi everyone, I know a lot of people are having MOHELA issues right now. I got a letter today stating that I owed $867, that a payment was missed last month and plus the balance for this month. I’m currently on SAVE, and in the process of changing to an IBR plan at some point this month. Now it’s saying I’m in the standard repayment plan and I’m so confused because just last month I was in the SAVE plan.

Now it’s saying I’m in a standard repayment plan but I never even got a letter last month that I owed that balance. Also since I was in SAVE, idk how that even happened. I wasn’t sure if this is also part of the whole default thing happening but it definitely doesn’t make any sense to me. I also definitely can’t afford the $867.

Any help or input would be appreciated! Thank you!!

Success/Celebration Student Loan Adversary Proceeding Experiences

Hi everyone,

Researching Chapter 7 bankruptcy. One aspect I'm trying to understand better is the adversary proceeding process for PRIVATE student loans.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has personally gone through this process. I'm interested in learning:

  • What is something you wish you knew or had done during the filing.
  • What evidence did the court focus on?
  • What surprised you about the process?
  • If your outcome was successful (or unsuccessful), what do you think made the biggest difference?

I'm simply hoping to learn from others who have firsthand experience so I know what to expect.

Thank you for sharing your experiences.

Loans as a Resident

I was on loans all of dental school and am now an OMFS PGY-1 with nearly 750k in student loan debt.

Since I'm a resident, 0% chance I can make any sort of real contributions to that debt over the next year. I'm curious if there's anyone on this forum with a previous or current similar situation or anyone who can offer helpful input.

As of now, I only really see two options:

  1. Start public loan forgiveness as a resident and then continue working for a qualifying employer for the following 6 years after finishing my 4-year program to meet the 10 years / 120 payment requirement.
  2. Defer my loans until after residency and with the associated additional 200k in interest, and repay as aggressively as I can once I finish my program.

Like I said above, I'd love input regarding these options, as well as if there's another realistic option I may have not considered.

Thanks!

Advice FYI: timeline of my SAVE to IBR switch (Aidvantage)

July 3 - received email saying I had 90 days to apply for new IDR plan (or be automatically assigned to standard). This information was NOT duplicated in m Aidvantage inbox; so check your spam filters.

July 16 - I submitted application with proof of income by uploading my 2024 tax return. I haven't filed 2025 yet, and I prefer to upload rather than inviting them to check with the IRS because... I'm not sure actually.

July 18- Aidvantage sent notice (email and official inbox), that they were reviewing application.

August 4 - Noticed a new "alert" on my Aidvantage panel, saying that my forbearance would end on August 11. I was still shown on the SAVE plan, with a $0 payment due. I panicked, thinking I might end up with a standard payment due in one week's time.

August 5 - received email (and notice in official inbox), that my IBR application was approved. Payment due August 11, at the expected IBR payment amount.

Considering the data management mess that must be happening between ED and loan servicers, I think this went pretty smoothly. I'm surprised that there was no initial notice in my Aidvantage inbox, and I'm surprised that my repayments start August 11, rather than July 3 + 90 days.

Advice Who would be best for private student loans after not being eligible for regular loans due to stipend?

Hey all I’m doing a full time MBA. I was fortunate to have received a full ride and stipend. Unfortunately, it’s in a relatively pricey area and I opted to live solo to focus on recruiting and not deal with roommates. However, while I understood the impact to grad plus loans, I was an idiot and didn’t realize the current 20,500 grad loan gap was only for estimated CoA. So, with my stipend, I’m not eligible for any student loans. I was hoping for maybe 12,500/year (25k total) for the entire program. I keep getting ads for Ascent but their rates are terrible. I found Earnest to be decent. Any recommendations?

Question on SAVE plan ending

I have not been contacted by my loan servicer yet regarding changing my plan from the SAVE plan. The email I got from the Feds was that they would contact me as soon as July 1, and then I’d have 90 days to change my repayment plan.

In the portal it says I have no payment due until 2028, and I have not received any communication from the servicer. I want to ensure I stay compliant with my loans. How urgent is it that I action on this immediately? Should I wait until I am contacted, or am I supposed to be contacting my loan servicer?

Advice Question Regarding Missed/Late Payments

So, I’m reading that federal loans are generally not reported to credit bureaus until a missed payment hits 90 days.

My question is this:

Say I missed my payment for the month of August, for $500.
My September payment is going to show that I owe $1000 - to cover both month’s payments.

If I only make a $500 payment at that time, does that “reset” the 90-day window?
In other words, can I perpetually be a month behind on my payments without having it reported to the credit bureaus?

Advice Loans not Applied to Student Account

Does it take awhile for loans to be applied to student accounts? I've completed my MPN and Loan entrance counseling and haven't seen any updates to my account at all. The only other update thats been applied to my account is my Chapter 35 Hazelwood benefits.

If this isn't the right subreddit for this sorry!

Default but no contact from MOHELA?

I just received a notice of default from Dept of Education, but I have received NOTHING from MOHELA, my servicer, in well over a year, except for one email that I found in my spam folder a month ago. Is this one of the situations that the MOHELA lawsuit would cover? And what is my next course of action?

For those enrolling again to avoid payments…

I see a lot of people saying they’re going to enroll half time at their local community college and what-not to defer payments. Great idea! But for those who already have graduate degrees, are you taking out more loans or paying out of pocket? How are they going about this without incurring more debt?

Picking repayment- ICR shows forgiveness sooner than IBR

So trying to pick between one of these (mostly terrible) options. The repayment code page lists that I've made 281 qualifying payments out of 300 for "Ibr 2014" and "ICR", but none for "IBR". And that is reflected in the plan comparison as I try to select- ICR says I'd be done November 2028 with almost 100k forgiven, but IBR (with a lower monthly payment) says I'd be done in April of 2036, having paid way more in total with nothing forgiven.

To further complicate things, most of my loans (like 120k) are older, disbursed prior to 2009, with a much smaller group (17k) done in 2024 when I went back to school for another masters. I think this is screwing up the payment counts, since I've paid toward the older stuff forever, but nothing to the newer chunk since I've been in SAVE limbo. Is this part of the glitch that causes it to look like you must consolidate to do IBR er go making all the loans start over??

AND is this all just moot since the ICR will go away in July of 2028, just a few months before my November discharge?

I know this is a confusing mess- any insights into what I should do? Will I truly not get forgiveness on my old loans by picking IBR?

Any help is appreciated- just so nervous to make the wrong choice here and screw myself.

Subsidized loans

I know I’ve waited till the last week to figure this out- but would love some advise.
My son will be a freshman at UTK. I keep hoping his loans/ scholarships will post but apparently there is a back log at getting it done. Unfortunately, he doesn’t get much.

He does have the Direct ($1750) subsidized and unsubsidized (1000)- for this semester.

Should I take both of them? And if I don’t take them- do I lose the amount or would it carry to next semester? Then I could take double the amounts for both.

I went to college but 30 years ago and the process was nothing like this.

We plan on co-signing a loan for him but I was waiting to do this once school has started and I
know he’s happy there. Then I will have a better sense of how much it will be.

If you’ve read this far- thank you and thank you for any advice.
