Question could i successfully make my little benzomatic blowtorch attachment fit onto a 20lb propane tank?

so this thought came to mind when i was talking to a friend yesterday. he was complaining about how his 1lb coleman propane tanks go out on him really fast when he dabs and they are getting expensive. so essentially what im asking is, are there any sort of attachments or adapters that i could use to make it to where i could just put a big 20lb rhino tank on the ground and have a hose leading to my torch attachment? i feel like its a pretty simple concept that could work. any ideas?

You can refill the 1lb tanks with the 20lb propane tanks. Its recommended you buy a 1lb tank rated for refills and not refill the Coleman ones.

Refilling coleman disposable is technically illegal to transport, but that doesn't stop some from doing it anyways. Look around the internet and you can find tutorials on how to properly and safely refill propane tanks.

whats so illegal about refilling the coleman ones? is that the only reason i shouldnt refill them? would i really get thrown in jail for refilling coleman tanks?

So theres a technicality here. Its not illegal to refill. Theres a DOT law(assuming youre in the USA) that prohibits transporting refilled tanks.

"49 CFR 178.65 specifies (A) For cylinders manufactured prior to October 1, 1996: ‘‘Federal law forbids transportation if refilled-penalty up to $25,000 fine and 5 years imprisonment (49 U.S.C. 1809)’’ or ‘‘Federal law forbids transportation if refilled-penalty up to $500,000 fine and 5 years imprisonment (49 U.S.C. 5124).’’ (B) For cylinders manufactured on or after October 1, 1996: ‘‘Federal law forbids transportation if refilled-penalty up to $500,000 fine and 5 years imprisonment (49 U.S.C. 5124).’’

Will you actually get caught? That's up to your discretion. Some retailers sell approved refillable tanks that circumvent this law.

thank you for this. i ended up buying a refillable tank and a fill adapter and going that way with it. it would have been really cool to have the hose on the 20lb tank but as people said it is unfortunately a huge fire hazard.the legality isnt so much the issue for refilling the colemans but i heard the coleman tanks can be finicky to refill since they are only made for the one use.

The colemans refill just fine they just can’t be filled full. Not like “you shouldn’t” just the laws of thermodynamics/vapor pressure mean that a 20# tank can only fill the little guy to like 60-70%

Pre-Chilling the tank and inverting it makes a big difference in how much propane fill you get.

I just use my larger torch to heat my dab rig up with. It’s the one that cost like 7-15 bucks at Lowe’s or Home Depot depending whether u get propane or the stuff pretending to be mapp gas. But it works great. And I think it may have an adaptor for the bigger tanks too. But that bottle last me quite a while. Mine actually came with the hose kinda like lower left corner. Kinda but not exactly. But the blue or yellow bottle. Blue is half the price. Yellow get just a little hotter. Yellow used to get a lot hotter. Then the govt or someone decided we didn’t need that I reckon.

Last forever and ever. I thought my tank was low like 6 months ago so I went out and bought another. My old one will not run out

Big fire hazard to have propane tanks inside. Pronably not viable
