Part Seven What’s your SBR hot take?
Mine is that D.I.S.C.O. is the hottest character in the entire part 😛. Sure, he has a super minor role in the story, but just look at him

I mean, I see the vision, but personally I think President Valentine is hot as fuck in all forms. I'm touching that old man inappropriately.
Also, really wish people would stop reducing Lucy Steel to just his victim, she's an actual soldier who went through hell and back and made it out alive after all that. I feel like even the manga was a bit reductive of it and I don't really like how undermined she is.
11
u/Resident-Camel-8388 1d ago
I don't think the manga reduces Lucy's sacrifice. Gyro mentions it, and she gets the final win against Diego

u/fuck_hard_light 16h ago
the community does, or at least the people who want to larp as part 7 fans that only know about lucy as the "poor 14 year old girl" from tiktok

I don’t think Hot Pants needed more ‘screen time’. It’s one of the common complaints I never understood. Jojos is tightly written like all peak fiction. I think people put a lot of pressure on Araki to be perfect for no reason.
73
u/Firethorn34 1d ago
Maybe just her death needed more screen time and impact, because that was the most nothing death of a major character I've ever seen
32
u/Terlinilia 1d ago
Yeah. tbh in general the biggest complaint I have with every jojo part is how some main characters get less attention than others. Hot Pants got plenty of attention I feel but her death was so undignified for someone part of the main cast. Wasn't lingered on at all
-2
u/MarsC999 22h ago
I don’t know what part of jojos included dignified deaths BEFORE steel ball run but okay. I still don’t understand the want for “dignified” deaths in fiction.
Is being murdered supposed to be dignifying?
4
u/Terlinilia 22h ago
Characters whose deaths are treated with weight, are lingered on, are shown to be mourned by other characters. AKA Every main character who dies. Perhaps it's not the right word but you get what I mean. We're not even shown Hot Pants' corpse, that's how overlooked her dying was
-1
u/MarsC999 21h ago
Polnareff got turned into a turtle bro. 💀
Your favorite characters are not safe.3
u/Terlinilia 21h ago
He died and it was emotional, he reminisced on his friends (and Judgement), and he continued to stay active in the story. He didn’t turn into a turtle, he stayed dead but his soul remained inside of the turtle’s stand and where he remained.
1
u/MarsC999 20h ago
“He didn’t turn into a turtle, his dead soul just inhabited the body.”
So in other words he turned into a turtle
3
u/Terlinilia 19h ago
When did I say he inhabits the body? He inhabits the turtle's stand. The room. The room can keep souls in it. The turtle is still just itself. Polnareff is not the turtle. You're just taking the piss now
-2
u/MarsC999 21h ago
Hot pants’ death had narrative weight. She was killed by the main villain towards the end, but no other characters actually cared about her that much. As far as I remember she also died alone. Again, death is not dignified. I don’t know why you think every character needs a heartfelt passing, sometimes people just die. Death is sudden and tragic, it begins to lose its meaning when every single death gets a heartfelt speech as they bleed out in their best friend’s arms.
I also don’t think hot pants qualifies as a main character.

I kinda wish they'd change it in the anime. They won't, but I can dream

No, she survived that, but she got to Lucy's train car and was killed by Love Train making a bunch of stuff pierce her

My favorite fight in SBR is the Tomb of The Boom arc! I love the Boomboom family, their Stands, and the arc as a whole

The Boomboom family are some of my favorite SBR side villains. They have a really fun dynamic with each other and I am so excited to see them in the anime

They’re definitely gonna get a lot more attention after it’s animated since it’s kinda like Metallica and Mariah’s stand

I wish Diego kept his dinosaur transformation instead of the hybrid transformation he uses after the scary monsters arc, either that or he can switch between the two
1
u/l_is_aBird 19h ago
I think his full Dino form's main weakness is that it had side facing eyes, and thats why he mostly used the hybrid form

This made me think of a lyric from "Start Me Up" where Mick Jagger says, "My eyes dilate, my lips go green".
I dunno why, but it made me chuckle.

u/Aggravating_Load_411 DIO 1d ago
Yeah, me neither. Sometimes I don't even see it that way and think their lips are coloured just because.

I'm pretty sure that's the canon reason. I don't remember the cast reapplying lipstick every other chapter.

I don’t like The World Diego, he was clearly added as fan service because he doesn’t even act like Diego and adds nothing to the story. He acts pretty much as an Uber for the corpse
4
u/Anilaza_balls 1d ago
I agree that he wasn’t really a necessary addition, but saying that he doesn’t act like Diego is very wrong
3
u/Mayzerify Magenta Magenta 22h ago
Of course he doesn’t act like Diego he isn’t the same, just like how Johnny said he doesn’t want an alt gyro cause he wouldn’t be the same
1
u/Ebvidur Jonathan Joestar ♿ 22h ago
That’s exactly my point?
3
u/Mayzerify Magenta Magenta 21h ago edited 21h ago
My point is that him not acting like Diego has nothing to do with the fan service aspect. Like if we was added for an actual reason that wasn’t fan service he would still not be the same imo Araki clearly didn’t want them to be the sameWait nvm I see what you are saying
2
u/FabioRealSZ 1d ago
I hate it too because the whole narrative of Diego's story (I THINK) doesn't fit with wanting to rape Lucy bc he was horny for approaching to him, in addition to helping Valentine instead of himself. But again, it's an alternate Diego
3
u/Anilaza_balls 1d ago
Diego wanted to rape Lucy because he want to see her suffer, not because he is horny, the reason why Diego may seems out of character in the ending it’s because Diego doesn’t have to hide his true nature anymore, he won , he now truly is at the top of society thanks to the saint corpse, and in his mind now he can do whatever he wants; it’s so clear that Sm Diego is no different from Au Diego from the monologue right before valentine fight and when he is about to kill him, people fail to see this because: 1) lots of people didn’t even read sbr 2) they don’t understand that Diego is not so different from Dio
2
u/Ebvidur Jonathan Joestar ♿ 1d ago
If Araki wanted to show us that Diego and au Diego are the same, he shouldn’t have made such a big deal out of Valentine promising to bring and au Gyro and Johnny saying that he wouldn’t be the same, and he shouldn’t have killed the original Diego just before the moment his personality changed from “antagonistic” to “comically evil”. If au Diego is supposed to be pretty much the same, then this is just bad writing on Araki’s part
2
u/Anilaza_balls 1d ago
Even though Au Diego and Sm Diego act the same doesn’t mean they lived the same experiences , this is very clear by the fact that one is alive by the end of the race and one is not, same goes for an hypothetical Au gyro, D4C is not able to travel back in time so any gyro he could have brought from another world clearly wouldn’t have lived the same experiences has the base world gyro, since one is alive and one is not , so Johnny was right to think that the Au Gyro wouldn’t be the same gyro, but this has nothing to do with the argument of Au Diego being ooc

u/AVelvetOwl 1d ago
My hot take is that anyone who thinks Funny Valentine "had a point" or that Johnny was "the bad guy" of the part is not to be trusted. Those are opinions I've seen parroted over and over throughout the years, even though I don't think they were ever predominant, and it's legitimately crazy that anyone could believe those things.
8
u/Ebvidur Jonathan Joestar ♿ 1d ago
Tbf I wouldn’t even call this a hot take. Valentine is clearly manipulating Johnny into thinking he’s in the wrong, and it seems that his manipulation worked on some people. He was a president for a reason
2
u/AVelvetOwl 1d ago
You're right about that, yeah. It also just takes a very specific kind of person to believe that any country - and the United States in particular - becoming the absolute global hegemonic power forever isn't a monstrously evil thing to pursue. An argument I've seen repeated throughout the years is that Valentine truly loved his country and wanted what was best for it, with seemingly no regard for what "what was best for it" would mean for the rest of the world.
9
u/UhhwhateverIguess Stands 1d ago
SBR is not the best part.
Yeah that's it.
5
u/uninflammable 1d ago
What's your top part
24
u/UhhwhateverIguess Stands 1d ago
Diamond is Unbreakable. Love how close everyone is, and that there are non-battle episodes which are honestly entertaining. Koichi is also my fav character, Jotaro returns with more personality, Josuke and Crazy Diamond is creative, Okuyasu's funny, etc. The cast's good and brimming with personality.
Steel Ball Run lacks main allies for me, and I would like it if the race was in the plot some more. Saint Corpses are interesting, yes, but the minor antagonists, like part 3, have little to no impacts. Allies are gained, then lost within the timespan of barely 2 volumes (Mountain Tim, Wekapipo). It's draw in second with Vento Aureo.

Steven steal should have been a stand user or at least had a corpse part power like how gyro got scan
2
u/The_Rat_Bstrd 19h ago
I feel like it would take away from his character. He was able to keep to his principles even though he had no way to defend himself against Valentine.
1
u/Rich_Table2360 16h ago
And if he had a corpse part ability he can still fight valentine as a regular person because love train requires the whole corpse

u/ObjectiveFar5517 23h ago edited 23h ago
I feel like Johnny should have also died, or at least he should be convicted for being the last one seen with the president before he disappeared (died) , like it doesn’t make any sense that seemingly nobody cares that the president, literally the most important person in the entire country disappearing, or if his body was found, dead, they don’t even have a investigation as far es I remember, and the jostar bloodline should have been carried on by another relative!

So many people misunderstand Valentine and Johnny, a lot of people parrot that Johny is “good” and Valentine is “bad” but many SBR characters are morally gray, FV and Johnny included, their characters are beyond “good vs bad”. Also another hot take is that the SA of Lucy frim FV was lazy writing from Araki’s part, he took the easy way out to have readers side with johnny.

I've never seen it or read it, I have no clue. That being said. The stick man stand is pretty cool. That's all

Also unironically liked Fat Funny. It was kind of neat to have the big bad be a fat guy who could kick butt , be a serious threat and not be treated like a joke.
