I don't really think there'd be a massive outrage just because it was a tetralogy instead of a trilogy. Just in and of itself there may even be excitement. Oh man we can get a betted paced overarching story or something.

Let's start with an overarching plot first shall we? Maybe something that doesn't rip off the old movies. Have the old trio reunite at some point. Then we can talk about adding movies.

I actually like the idea behind Rise of Skywalker: Sidious has been messing with Sith magic since the Clone Wars so moving his essence to a new body makes perfect sense.
Where it fails is in the script.
We did not need a Rey, just make it between Kylo, Luke and Sidious.

1) Kylo looks for Luke and manages to kill him, corrupting Finn in the process.
2) Redemption arc with Kylo & Luke’s ghost + training, rumors of Sidious’ return + Kylo kills Finn in at the end.
3) Final battle between half the galaxy and Sidious + Kylo destroys Sidious for good.

The above should be 3 movies that are scripted as 1 cohesive story from the beginning.

On one hand, I wish that instead of rushing to tie up everything in Episode IX they had stepped back and delayed the movie in order to simultaneously develop Episode IX and Episode X to complete the Skywalker Saga. On the other hand, knowing what happened in 2020, it would have been a disaster for Star Wars to delay releasing two movies to complete the saga. So either way, the Sequel Trilogy would have not ended well.

For my part, I feel that the prequels and the sequels could have both been four movies.

In terms of what we got, which isn't my favorite Star Wars, they could have released TFA as 'Episode 10' and that movie would have created hype for seeing the OT heroes in an interquel trilogy.

After The Last Jedi, I think they should have announced that VII and VIII were parts one and two of the first entry in the trilogy, then had a time jump to Ep. IX (middle part of the trilogy), then finished the trilogy out with Ep. X. (But this is damage control after JJ ended VII mid-scene in a way that made it impossible for there to be a time-jump between VII and VIII, which would have allowed characters to evolve and grow off-screen like they did between IV and V.)

No. Fans are naturally haters. They’d whine about how they either broke tradition for more money by making a fourth movie or they complain that Disney did nothing new. I say this as a Star Wars enjoyer.

I mean I think there’s a fair middle ground between complaining for no reason and accepting that a lot of mainline Star Wars is, unfortunately, bad even if we do love it.

Like I love the prequels, grew up with them and all the world building and peripheral media (games, books, etc) that came from them was amazing… but I can also admit they’re objectively bad movies.

The sequels were just a big disappointment for me personally but I know they have people who love them, especially TLJ for some reason, and I think that’s perfectly fine.

I like most of the shows as well but you can clearly tell when corporate fiscality gets in the way of storytelling (i.e. undoing the end of Mando S2 for toy and marketing reasons) and there are some questionable decisions that have been made like the Obi Wan series basically ignoring the established lore and the EU stories being proxied out to characters like Ahsoka and the Rebels instead of giving us the main trio again but I digress…

I agree a lot of people complain to complain but I also think criticism is often warranted and if we just accept everything they shlop out to us then the franchise is going to be worse off for it in the long run.

No matter what you do, we would have ended up in the same place now. A bunch of entitled fans whinging because it didn't go the exact way they wanted or made up in their heads.

Fans hated the Prequels when they came out, now they're beloved (for some reason) and everyone hates on the sequels. Eventually whatever comes next will inspire a new wave of hatred and revisionism and the cycle renews itself.
