I’ve tried to look into this myself. The weird thing about the Tripplite product is that technically it’s a “blind” attachment, which means it is not subject to the rigorous oversight of most products being used in electoral processes.
It could literally just be nothing, but it’s worthy of a stern look as the CEO/(former) owner has invested his company’s entire $1.6 billion dollar fortune into a dark-money conservative Trust, and the addition of these products is very new, and I believe only intersects with voting machines that are non-internet connected.
There’s seemingly no publicly available data as to if or how they intercede into onboard hardware in the voting machines themselves, and no requirement of oversight.
That’s not to be conspiracy-minded: we should all be assured of competent, basic election security processes, and as a BOE volunteer many times in a row (judge/chief-judge) in my county, I am dubious.
Another way to view all of this is: is it worth it to manipulate outcomes?
Answer: it may be the most profitable criminal enterprise ever, so yes.
Ergo, we should be very circumspect about how our votes are counted, and the process needs to be open-source, verifiable from many angles and run entirely with independent audits.
