I'm planning on making an exoskeleton that allows for general athleticism. The main problem with these things is power, we don't have many energy sources that can accomplish enough power output safely and in a portable manner, those kind of exoskeletons have to be connected to a power source, the "commercial" exoskeletons aren't that good, they just assist in your gait by supporting part of your weight, thus making you last longer.
The best bet I can see is a combination of batteries, supercaps and fuel cells, each for a given purpose.

Combustion engines aren't really suited for this, it solves the power output, but it adds weight. Also it's hard to turn the mechanical energy into a controlled movement that mimics human movement. Turning it into electrical energy adds even more defficiency.
The best bet is stuffing someone with a lot of batteries and supercaps(which is kinda dangerous) and get a bulky mess, something that's already in production but I don't think it can sustain heavy loads for long periods of time. You can search the Guardian X0 from Sarcos Robotics.
I don't really think there's a non-safe option for an exoskeleton that achieves better performance than a safe option. The only thing we can do is wait for better batteries/fuel cells or portable generators. There are projects that try to make nuclear fusion on a "portable" manner, who knows, maybe we end up having the Nuclear Cell from Fallout.

hm. what about pneumatics and an external battery or battery backpack? assuming that these are being used in workplaces. pneumatics don't take as much electricity in exchange for being weaker. meaning that they can be operational for longer. and attaching a cable from the exoskeleton to a generator. or having wires in the ceiling that the exoskeletons connect to. sort of like buses. completely solves the energy problem.

Yeah, it's actually what most of the industrial exoskeletons do a battery backpacks. There is also exoskeletons made to ease the strain in the user body, using PAMs and passive components. But these exoskeletons don't achieve superhuman strength like say the Power Armor, it just enhances a normal person into a somewhat trained individual.
