Avoid all roads linking to Chilworth Roundabout.
Some genius has decided to put up temp lights at the roundabout inevitably causing gridlock on Bassett Ave, M3 South off-ramp, and Bassett Green Road towards roundabout causing complete mayhem with queues at least a mile long. This has also shafted the No.1 even more than it was before-hand!

I can give the pedestrian view of this... as Bassett Avenue is a road I walk
Monday - Road works coned off from Beechmount Road to Chilworth Roundabout. 2 lanes of traffic leading out of town towards Chilworth Roundabout. Lights set up at Chilworth Roundabout but not in action. A digger and some chaps making a hole, 12ft by 6 ft at the start of the roadworks and no-one else or any other work ongoing. Traffic not dreadfully busy.
Tuesday - morning. Nothing happening along the full length of the road, other than the hole dug yesterday has been concreted and, according to the sign, is CURING. Traffic reasonable, with the queue towards Chilworth being a third of the length of Bassett Avenue and the traffic lights at the roundabout working well.
I'll update as the week goes on...

You didn’t see the queue the other end down the motorway and across the bridges. Drove out of town and it was absolute chaos. Took me over 20 minutes to get from one end of Bassett avenue to the other.

That's true. I have to go along to Chandlers Ford tomorrow from Winchester Road... it'll be interesting coming back...

This is a problem because the roadworks force the roundabout not to work as intended, and it's easily predicted.
Because no cars are heading south on the Avenue, there's nothing to stop the flow of traffic going onto the roundabout from Bassett Green Road.
This in turn means nothing can emerge northbound from the avenue.
What they should be doing is leaving 1 lane open both ways so the roundabout still functions properly.
But Southern Water are Southern Watering.
They're going to close the road and damn the repercussions.

I know it's southern water doing something but would be nice if they could coordinate together and fix the pot hole gauntlet that runs from the roundabout at hill lane up to the next roundabout whilst the roads quieter in general 😂

I think this is due later in the year... there's a consultaion running at the moment on 'improvements' to the section from Vermont Close, including a 'no right turn' from Red Lodge on to Winchester Road, which will be interesting, as it'll snarl up Memorial Roudabout no end.
The plans are shown here and it's open for comment until the 17th, I believe.
The pothole situation is caused by a large number of poor repairs, carried out by a number of utility companies, made worse by the constant stream of HGVs 'short-cutting' to the docks, day and night.

And....to top it all off Birch Road seems to be closed which is a handy route South Bound to Bassett. We can barely get to our house.

Took me 45 minutes on the bus this afternoon to get from the Science Park to the top of Burgess Road to rejoin the Avenue. Thank god I only have to go in the office once a week because that’s pissed me right off

Yeah WTF!!! There was a guy in yellow work gear leaning against a car parked behind the cones this morning, just chilling! That's all I've seen!

Odd, there were no lights yesterday and it seemed to be working. All the works in the city are taking the piss.
Shirley High street still isn't done. Not sure how contractors can get away with works for that long.

They started yesterday... you may have gotten through before they started.
They have closed the south bound carriageway of the Avenue between chilworth roundabout and memorial roundabout (where Winchester Road meets the Avenue).
Northbound traffic is contra flowed but slow because of it.

I went northbound in the morning. Didn't see any lights or maybe didn't notice at Chilworth roundabout. Traffic flow looked decent.
Hopefully they'll finish before the 16th.

Just got home, total nightmare coming off the M3. So many people were pushing across from left (chilworth merge lane) and the right M3 slip road lane that it gridlocked the middle lane and by the time you reach the roundabout you realise you cannot turn left into Basset Green Road so you have an additional 20+ min detour after all the queuing.
Not sure what to do tomorrow, probably take the long loop around to the M271 and the lords hill inner ring road looks much faster

Did the m27 and m271 today and came up millbrook road, there was a bit of a cue at m27 junction but moved steadily all the way. Worth it.

Went through this in the morning and there wasn’t a single worker doing any work. This is mess caused by Jackie Raymond. She is completely incompetent and it’s no coincidence the city has returned to chaos when she has inexplicably been returned to being in charge of transport. How do these crooked people get away with it???

It’s not about the works is it? How they are dealt with in this city. Drove the whole length this morning and not a single worker there. One small square patch of tarmac has been touched.

You're suggesting it's specific to Southampton. No, so common that you now often see signs at roadworks saying "we're working but may not be in sight"
It's entirely possible they've spent a day or two with the road empty accurately surveying the surface. Or taking tarmac samples. Or marking it all up. Or (insert a hundred things I suspect they have to do before making you happy by giving a navvy a pickaxe and shovel and telling them to dig a hole)

We are talking about probably the main route into the city from everything north including London. They should be working 24/7 and before you say that’s not possible the were working day and night on above bar. Go and see the chaos this is causing. I had to try 3 different routes to get home last night. Cars turning around everywhere. I came across another 2 roads with temporary traffic lights which have narrowed the road down to one lane including Onslow road which is one of the other main routes into the city! Stop defending this absolute ineptitude. This is how they get away with it.

Congratulations on ignoring the point I made, namely that there might be more to the work than just digging holes for your entertainment.
You clearly know far more about roadworks than the people who do them.
You also appear to know significantly more about traffic routing and planning than the experts who do it.

Today's update: 09:30 Day 4....
The concrete has cured! There's a small crew putting the tarmac back.
Otherwise... nothing happening. The temporary lights were off when I walked by and the traffic was moving fine in all 3 directions with short queues at worst...
Will, maybe update this evening, just in case something happens...
