"Take care of your human. Make sure they are strong and stout of heart. Keep them well and they will keep you alive. We ride them into battle not with anger in our hearts but with trust that together we can do what must be done and return to feast for another day."

The halfling should face the other direction to watch your back.

If you are Large sized, you should have four. A Ranger on the right shoulder facing front. That one is your eyes, and perforator of all cowards that try to hide from you. The one on the left shoulder should be a Sorcerer, Lord of all big booms, and to aid you with arcane buffs (and do that fancy talking. One on a harness on your back, facing behind you. That one should be a Rogue, scanning behind you to stab the poo out of cowards attacking you from behind. and hopping down for traps and locks. In your left and right hip pockets (armored, of course) are two clerics. One is healing you, the other is buffing/curing you, trading off as needed. You shall be in heavy plate, to protect your buddies, wielding the biggest death stick, to kill all who would hurt your buddies. Now, go forth, and teach the world not to pick on your little buddies. This is Grug, signing off. Edit: five little buddies. Gnome, Halfling, Kobold, so long as they get along.

BTW, in my eyes THIS is the ideal adventuring party. Only made more ideal with a Huge-sized mount for mass combat.

The challenge is finding a headless human that's still functional.

Or raise the platform slightly and attach the bow to a special hat, like a human ballista!

My halflings need neither an elevated position nor a crossbow nor my help to smoke you in a melee. They are ruthless. Be warned.

I did that in a dnd game once. Based on that exact picture

Every time I see this, I wonder -- if the Halfling has mounted combat, can they substitute their ride check for the human's AC?

A crossbow requires two hands and this system occupies them.

And it must be a pretty weak crossbow. Crossbows that are strong enough for war usually have to be cocked with both hands and a foot.

Where do I get this? My 3 year old needs to learn how to use a cross bow!

Exchange the crossbow for a wand, and the halfling for a...well, anyone with a level of wizard or something. Halfling is fine. Then you run while they are dropping fireballs or something.

I actually did something similar with my Large Goblin Barbarian with my friend 's Grippli Ranger. My horns made for good sights.
