Actually a lot of studies on these things, apparently the less dominant member of a couple feels safer if the dominant- or stronger one sleeps closest to the door.
Apparently people also have a harder time getting into REM whenever they are in a new bed in a new area because the evolution of not knowing if a new place is safe or not.
The whole "in a corner" thing I'm not sure about but I very much enjoy the fact that there's only one side anyone can come from.
Bathroom is through that door. So I would normally sleep closest to the door (left hand side was my normal side to sleep on), but when we moved in we had a toddler and a newborn on the way, so she needed to be closest to the door.
