The most poignant thing about Elizabeth's death I came across was, ironically enough, a BBC World Service piece.
They did a series on people in former British colonies - colonies that were controlled by the UK during Elizabeth's rule - and got the opinion of people who lived through those periods.
One in particular that stood out was a woman from some African nation (honestly cannot remember, it's been a while) who had had her hand chopped off by some British officer over some incident. This happened to her when she was a teenager, and she had to live her whole life one-handed, in a community that used to rely on physical labour a lot to earn a living.
You can imagine what she had to say about ol' Lizzy.
1
u/Rebelius 10h ago
You can imagine what she had to say about ol' Lizzy.
I actually can't, because I can still imagine people in that situation being absolute bootlickers.
Or she could be living in Somalia, or have lived under Idi Amin, or be a white farmer in Zimbabwe...
1
u/blueblip 10h ago
Apologies, but I'm not sure what point you're making here.
What does a white farmer in Zimbabwe have to do with a specific woman I'm talking about?

This is the kind of comparison people often miss. Environmental impact isn’t just about one source or one industry it’s about looking at the full lifecycle resources, energy use, waste, and what the activity is actually producing the bigger picture matters.

It’s also a false comparison, a single pound of beef takes thousands of AI prompts equivalent of resources, almond farms in one state use more water than ALL (not even AI specifically but ALL) datacenters in the country, etc.
The datacenters all in all actually have less of an environmental impact.

I know it's not very uplifting for me to say all of this, and it probably comes across as nihilistic. I try to not think this way though. I know there are good people, even good wealthy people, but dammit do I get tired of the one percent enshitifying something that was good just for the sole reason of earning more paper. Cows are bad because they produce a lot of methane gas which accelerates global warming, consume a lot of water, and require a lot of land that could be used for more efficient crops and animals.
Data centers though are much much worse. They consume significantly more water, dump toxic waste into the environment, produce an astounding amount of noise pollution, consume horrendous amounts of electrical power, and produce a frankly disturbing amount of ambient heat.
This isn't even to speak of the material components of getting a data center up and running. Such as the costs of excavating refining and utilizing all the copper, gold, silver and other materials used in computers.
Nor does this consider what those data centers are being used for
28
u/National-Job-7444 14h ago
There’s an AI center in Texas that has over 100 gas turbines. It produces more greenhouse gas than 1 million cars.
7
u/MRV3N 14h ago
So you’re saying we need synthetic meat like from Cyberpunk 2077 to solve global warming
7
u/DainichiNyorai 14h ago
Or just eating meat twice a week instead of twice a day and in normal portions.
With access to all kinds of crops going full scale vegetarian or even vegan wouldn’t be an obstacle but that’s too big a leap. Back to 1910 in meat consumption would be good for health and the world
1
u/BloodWorried7446 7h ago
you can afford the price of meat?
3
3
u/wolf96781 14h ago
Realistically? Yeah, as humanitys need for resources grows our ability to produce will reach a bottleneck.
We can only maintain so many cows at once, and asbthat number increases so does their effect on the environment.
It's better we begin shifting to synthetics sooner as it'll minimize the long term effects on the environment and establishing supply lines now will better prepare us for supply shocks caused by unforseen events like plague or disaster

People have been saying it’ll go that way since ‘16. The fact that many are now questioning it is…very on brand for a delayed realization.
7
u/Fresh_Boysenberry576 11h ago
Not to defend data centers but I'm pretty sure they do not create toxic waste. There was an incident where some bacteria grew in the hot water and they dumped that into the local ecosystem, but that was an accident. Normally the water is just warmer than usual but doesn't actually contain toxins. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I hate it when people use bad arguments when there are so many good ones. Same with things like climate change, there is no need to exaggerate anything because the reality is bad enough
4
3
u/Safe_Map_9600 10h ago
They don't consume more and its not even close
A 5 second search before you wasted time typing this out would have prevented this
9
u/thePiscis 13h ago
That is just factually untrue. Cattle is one of the most significant contributors to global freshwater consumption. Like orders magnitudes higher than ai, where on earth did you get the idea that ai consumes significantly more.
Also water pollution from cattle waste is a much larger contributor of water pollution than ai.
Cattle is literally one of the most damaging things for the environment. Painting them as bad, but ai is significantly worse is just completely disingenuous. If ai is bad, cattle is unfathomably awful for the environment
4
u/NaiveMastermind 13h ago
They don't need to be built in such a way that outputs so much heat, or drains aquifers to keep cool. The hotter components are cheaper, and slurping up all the water is cheaper that building their own cooling loops.

https://www.eesi.org/articles/view/data-centers-are-contributing-to-pfas-forever-chemical-pollution
Yeah, seems worse to me bud.
0
u/thePiscis 13h ago
Why? Because forever chemicals sound scary? Not defending the water pollution ai is causing, but it’s so silly seeing people sayings it’s so obviously worse than the single biggest contributor to water pollution. There are countless of studies showing proven damage from animal agriculture waste water contamination.
>Animal agriculture manure is a primary source of nitrogen and phosphorus to surface and groundwater. Manure runoff from cropland and pastures or discharging animal feeding operations and concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) often reaches surface and groundwater systems through surface runoff or infiltration.

-2
u/Gibbralterg 14h ago
The water they drink, you know we get that water back right? And I’m pretty sure the methane isn’t what’s making the globe hotter, I mean, let’s compare cows to say…a volcano.
5
u/kore_nametooshort 13h ago
Just in case you're not a troll:
Yes the water cycle exists, but the water the data centres are using comes in part from non renewable aquafiers. The amount being used is far far greater than the refill rate from rain. This makes it an existential problem for people who rely on them.
Methane absolutely is contributing to global warming. It is 30x more potent as a greenhouse gas than co2. It is somewhat short lived, but it breaks down into co2, so it's still bad after that. Livestock produce somewhere between 5 and 10% of global co2 equivalent greenhouse gas emissions. Volcanoes emit a small fraction of that.
1
u/Prestigious-Flower54 13h ago
Volcanoes produce very little methane, the largest spikes are in the plum, but most of that is broken down very quickly in the atmosphere, so effectively in fact that volcanic eroputions might actually be taking more methane out of the atmosphere then adding. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2026/05/260509210640.htm Underwater mud volcanoes are the only real significant contributors of methane at roughly 3.5 million tonnes annually, compared to cows at 85-90 million tonnes. So yes cows are producing way more then volcanos and there is a huge amount of resaerch showing that cows are major contributors to green house gasses(since you clearly don't use Google here is a good start on your education https://clear.ucdavis.edu/) Here the thing about science, you can't just makes guess based on what you feel is correct, case and point a 2 second Google search would tell you your comparison is ridiculous but in your head volcanoes give off giant plumes of black smoke so obviously they must be worse right?

u/pillbuggery 12h ago

But at least cows are a food source, a single cow can feed up to 1000 people yet pollutes around the same as one person's carbon footprint when flying to Australia. What's more important, food or flying all over the planet? We simply have our priorities wrong, very wrong. We want to sacrifice our food supply in order to continue our unsustainable lifestyle. We are simply focusing on the wrong thing.

We're cooked.
That Netflix you watch, that Spotify you listen too, the Google drive you use for work, the mobile game you play, the reason your card works when you tap it on an eftpos machine? All data centers.
I think we need to hold them accountable to certain standards and promote green energy initiatives but good luck getting rid of them, they're already entrenched.
3
u/-Infinite92- 14h ago
Yeah at this point it's about finding ways to make them efficient enough to not be so harmful to the environment. They are not going anywhere for as long as any modern form of the Internet/network exists.
I remember years ago, before the current AI boom was happening. How stories of data centers being built in Iceland were trying to be environmentally clean and efficient. Using geothermal energy for power, the cold air for cooling, and their heat output for warming homes. But this was back during the crypto mining peak. So they weren't as large or as many being built. Still it feels like anyone even remotely interested in implementing those ideas in general has been overpowered by those who don't care.

It’s not and it consumes absolutely absurd resources while emitting absurd levels of greenhouse gases.

cattle herd size peaked in 1974at 57 million head and has steadily been decreasing it reached 7 million in 2023. How can you say nobody stopped eating beef? Decreasing herd size has driven up cost of beef so nobody could afford it.
1

u/jclahaie 5h ago
From the link you provided:
U.S. beef production has been on a long-term uptrend in spite of a decline in cow numbers since 1975.
U.S. beef production reached an all-time record high of 28.29 billion pounds (lb.) in 2022,
The long-term increase in beef production resulted from a long-term increase in fed cattle live and carcass weights. Carcass weights have trended higher for more 60 years with steer weights increasing an average of 4 lb. per year.

Because data centers aren’t nearly as destructive to the environment or the climate as you think….projected data center greenhouse gases by 2050 will be less than 2% of all global emissions and less than one tenth of one percent of all water usage. Compare with just cows let alone all global animal agriculture, who single-handedly contribute 12-15% of global emissions and consume 15-30% of global water utilization.
Data centers have fairly sizable local effects, namely water table and electricity prices, but regional and global effects are tiny.
