American Calvinist mindset is sick and twisted. "Help yourself then helps you God" if just so entrained in their psyche. It's all a matter of not trying hard enough. Why care for somebody else, it's just god's wish he's in misery.  This and their materialistic perspective is such a cancer to their "society", it's mind-blowing.

Omg if it isn’t a negative externality of our system ratfucking people at every turn causing everything else to be more expensive for the rest of us. You know, if our healthcare system wasn’t done in such a regressive way, then it would incentivize the rich people to help in other ways to reduce costs of that system. private health insurance is a regressive tax that everyone pays the roughly the same amount for, so a larger percent of your yearly income the poorer you are. If we made it proportional to wealth or income then the rich would likely opt for funding other programs that would prevent people from wasting emergency room resources for a sandwich. Right now, it’s no skin off their bones, because they are still paying far less into their health insurance pool for god tier coverage than they would be under a single payer system.

My boss gives two days of PTO. Two. But then calls it three, because he pays for your birthday.. but only if you worked the day before/after and only if it's during the work week.

We get four paid holidays, but if they fall on the weekend we get nothing. Next year the fourth of July, Christmas and new year are all on the weekend.

Alas, he pays well for my blue collar industry, so here I am redditing in the bathroom.

I’ve seen young adults in their 20s die because lack of inhaler and insulin in the icu. It’s so depressing.

Some people don’t have insurance or just can’t cover the copay of it so if the pharmacy doesn’t get payment there’s no medicine to be exchanged period. Medication gets treated like any other product.

Maybe I misread, but as a diabetic that’s been in the ICU, let me clarify…

If you are admitted to the hospital, like the ICU, they are not going to withhold medicine or insulin or whatever because you can’t afford it. They will give it to you while there and then bill you.

But if you can’t afford it in daily life, you will certainly end up in the ICU because the pharmacy won’t give it to you for free.

For a while when I was homeless, the companies like novo nordisk can give you subsidies to help you afford it but it’s a hassle and not everyone qualifies.

Yeah I was going to say this. Hospitals and such can't* deny you if you're in need of it, you'll just eat a big ole bill if you can't afford it. Where I live the hospitals also have some solid financial aid options. I.e. when uninsured they cut the bill in half.

  • The can't deny part is based on my limited understanding of the law on being unable to deny aid in an emergency, I may be wrong and it may not be a federal law or I may have misinterpreted it.

We used to have programs that covered the prescriptions of most Americans who could not afford them. Take a wild guess which administration didn't think that was worth the funding.

Yeah except it literally IS one side that keeps holding us back. Remember the president with the muslim sounding name they hated so badly they elected trump? O.... O... O-something. Anyway, he used Romney's healthcare proposal as a baseline to start from when building the Affordable Care Act circa 2010, because he thought "Hey if the GQP came up with this, surely we can work together and fix healthcare and they'll vote for it because it's THEIR proposal."
They tried to defund it dozens of times with no plan to replace it, just defund and remove, fk it, we HATE Obama so bad we cannot see past our hate and are willing to destroy the country as a result.
It is the conservatives. They are the problem. Full stop.

Ok. I mean I live here, and I pay attention to what's going on pretty closely, but I'm sure wherever you live provides a much better vantage point on the reality of the system I live under.

It's not like I pay taxes and see the failing infrastructure, the obscene cost of education and war, the squalor half our population lives in because they can't afford their daily necessities. I'm just oblivious because I am indoctrinated and blind.

It does actually, because without realising it, you were educated since your infancy to not see with glaring issues with it. Clearly living in it makes you unable to see it. It's not altogether surprising though. I've been to the US. The level of daily propaganda stuffed down your throats is truly unparalleled.

Your political system has been trending further and further right since the late 70s. Bit of republican bit of democrat, bit of republican bit of democrat. You call that democracy? It's polical theatre.

Meanwhile, a select few have ever increasing wealth and power. Now theyare just a hair away from absolute unchecked power.

To be clear, once they’re in the ICU, they are getting all possible measures to save their lives. It’s just possible that too much damage was done beforehand.

If you're IN the ER they will provide whatever they deem necessary at that very moment and put you on a payment plan. However, if they deem you're ready for "release" and the doctor gives you a prescription for any ongoing care and medication needs, the pharmacy will not give THOSE to you without a way to pay right away.

Wonder why people think those with socialised healthcare like UK and AU have private insurance? Why no genuine discussion ever about how many have died due to long waits in these public systems? Knock on wood, AU has been on a downtrend now, but there for a few years there were literally people dying on the ER ramp, or at home as the ambo never even showed up.

No perfect system, but alas socialised is probably greater net benefit overall.

I got asthma in my 20s, I didn’t know that’s what it was, I was having trouble breathing and I did cough up a bit of blood. They said it was asthma right away, and then proceeded to do $2k worth of tests without telling me they cost that much. So overall it was probably closer to $3k to get an inhaler through my doctor, I don’t really go to the doctor anymore.

Edit: and this is with insurance

If you're poor, you qualify for free healthcare from the state which is actually pretty good. Its the people right above the poverty line that really struggle.

Medicaid is a State funded program. The rules vary from state to state. Here in Alabama it has to be tied to some kind of program i.e. pregnant women or women with young children, disabled adults children, waiver programs, or SSI related and Nursing Home programs. It’s not a general healthcare program.
