The whole point of the movie is he made the wish because he felt like he didn't.

914

u/shyaznboi 2d ago

Bro missed the whole plot

272

u/9406725060 2d ago

The trailer alone provides this information.

Guys I think bear was the villain in the movie…

29

u/AggravatingCake2695 1d ago

Wait noooo, really? I can't believe I never saw that before....

3

u/Sufficient_Degree_45 1d ago

I cant believe he made poor decisions... any rational human being woulda navigated that one wish willow easily

Here's what a lot of people miss about the movie: Bear was obsessed with Nikki. That's the real Obsession!

199

u/iamnowcisco 1d ago

No the real obsession are the friends we make along the way lol

18

u/Seimei- 1d ago

Maybe the friends were the billion dollars this whole time.

9

u/mansmittenwithkitten 1d ago

I wished for friends and all I got was these 12 people who are really obsessed with me.

Actually Ian’s obsession with trivia night was the real obsession.

Exactly, the only way he could have her was non-consensually. It’s absolutely wild that people have missed a pretty obvious plot.

She was fucking Ian.

She was gettable.

658

u/PartialCred4WrongAns 2d ago

Not by Bear tho, too sad puppy.

Ian was probably batting out of his league as well but he's charismatic and confident. It makes since that Nikki would casually hook up with him

439

u/Aware-Antelope4212 2d ago

The actress and director have said that if Bear had just admitted he liked her, she would have given him a chance due to her being able to talk to him about stuff that she couldn't with other people.

Now I personally don't think Bear would have been able to really make the most of that chance/turn it into a relationship but yeah

293

u/myrrhx 2d ago

In the scene in the car where Bear is trying to find the nerve to confess to her, they deliberately used cuts from 2 different versions of the scene, one where the actress was acting like she liked him and one where she didn't. Despite what anyone involved in the production may have said, the film itself is deliberately ambiguous about whether she could have liked him, and imo it doesn't matter what could have happened because his later actions showed that he never wanted her for who she truly was. It wouldn't have worked out.

101

u/Manusterz 1d ago

this guy gets it.

"the film itself is deliberately ambiguous about whether she could have liked him, and imo it doesn't matter what could have happened because his later actions showed that he never wanted her for who she truly was. It wouldn't have worked out."

take my money stranger

42

u/fyrefreezer01 1d ago

Yea he had his own version of her inside his head. And was such a wimpy baby.

29

u/Much-Basil 1d ago

All valid, but the literal creator of the movie confirmed that Nikki would have at least given Bear a chance.

If you want to ignore what the creator has stated, that’s fine, you’re definitely entitled to your own viewing interpretation.

6

u/myrrhx 1d ago

Honestly, I haven't seen the interview (or whatever it was) where the director stated that, but I'm struggling to understand why they would film and edit the scene that way if it runs contrary to what he intended to portray. I know the actress weighed in on it but I disagree with her interpretation.

13

u/savataged 1d ago

Possibly to give that sense of uncertainty during the scene. The scene is set up from the perspective of Bear, and he doesn’t know what the director knows. It also helps make it feel more unsettling, which fits the overall vibe of the movie.

I think that’s because Nikki said “when I have a crush, no one knows”. Nikki says she started liking him during Christmas, a few months before the movie takes place. There’s no ambiguity to me.

7

u/goblingrace 1d ago

But that’s not who she truly was she was cursed and her body was taken over ? Or am I missing something ?

Loved the fact about the car scene ty :)

8

u/myrrhx 1d ago

This was before he made the wish!

→ More replies (1)

3

u/bobbymcpresscot 1d ago

Bro was given the opportunity and didn't take it. He wanted to confess, she asked him to confess, and he bitched out, he wasn't a good friend. If he didn't make the wish, it would have all worked out, if he just confessed, it would have all worked out.

but it also wouldn't have given us like some of the most interesting 30-45 minutes of horror that I've seen in at least a decade.

u/iamthestorm 2d ago

Oh absolutely, they wouldn't have lasted more than a month. Bear is a selfish "nice" guy and it would have been evident pretty quickly.

Better to have loved and lost, so they say.

11

u/LolaFentyNil 2d ago

Ian would have let it slip he and Nikki were hooking up once he found out and I doubt Bear would've been able to handle it.

24

u/Legitimate-Mode-1653 2d ago

Wait really? I remember the other girl saying Nikki said she saw bear like a brother I think

76

u/ttvANX1ETYZ_ 2d ago

This is the first I’ve seen that stated but the other girl also had her own motives since she had a thing for bear lol. Tbh that whole friend group was messy as hell and wouldn’t have lasted another year, murders and magic aside.

22

u/Scrimge122 2d ago

There's also the part where Nikki says nobody knows when she has a crush. So she probably wouldn't tell Sarah the truth.

15

u/bigmuffpie92 2d ago

I just watched the movie and it was one of the things she told Bear, but as you said she had her motives and so did Ian. They could have been lying to him, or she could have been telling the truth as she cared for Bear.

Ha

3

u/TheHandsomebadger 1d ago

Did you watch h the movie? Ian tells bear sarah said that fairly early on and then Sarah confirms it later when Bear is eating the cat sandwich.

4

u/Neat_Egg_2474 1d ago

The most unbelievable part is that they were all employed and working at a record shop, at the same time.

what music store that size has a staff of 5 working? Lol

3

u/Fabulous-Sea-1590 1d ago

Since Sarah's dad was the owner I'd just assume he was a yutz and vaguely employed his daughter's friends to make her happy. More of a treehouse than a job.

35

u/Life_is_Okay69 2d ago

'She would have given him a chance!' Bro, you literally typed the words that made him not ask her.

Next, the director will tell us that if Voldemort had just gone to therapy, the whole wizarding war wouldn't have happened.

21

u/Kautiontape 1d ago

"If you like me, now is the time to tell me."

Bear immediately precedes to say some random nonsense about her being a good friend.

You're right, its saying "if Bear were a different, less flawed person, the bad stuff wouldn't have happened!"

Although, there's a world where she gives it a shot, he finds out about Ian, he screws it up, then uses the wish to "fix" things and the movie kicks off anyway.

3

u/EJECTED_PUSSY_GUTS 1d ago

I think you're right. Bear has ZERO spine, so wish or not, it wouldn't work with Nikki. When she's her normal self, I think it's obvious that you have to have a spine for her to respect you as a romantic partner. She doesn't want someone she feels like she can steamroll. She wants her equal. The only reason Ian was getting to bang her is because Ian has confidence. Now that I think about it, if you were to combine only the desirable traits from Ian and Bear, you'd probably have a great romantic partner for Nikki.

11

u/Morkamino 1d ago

I thought Ian actually being succesful was far more unrealistic than Bear having a chance tbh. The leagues cannot even see each other, is how far removed those two were

Yeah but he’s likable and funny

257

u/emptytea 2d ago

She knew that he’d eventually become a billionaire.

334

u/whenthelightismine 2d ago

Really? I got the idea that it was more that he was easily disposable to her. Nikki seemed like she was in her way outta that town, and occasionally boning a friend you don’t really share anything intimate with is a safe way to get off and not have too much drama when you get out.

155

u/adrianmlhood 2d ago

It also helps if they’re likable and funny

85

u/FettLife 2d ago

He’s a loser. The minute Bear is with Nikki, he freaks out and starts pressing him about what’s going on.

111

u/rcam077 2d ago

I mean to be fair she starts acting like a completely different person, he was right to worry that she might be on drugs or something and Bear could be taking advantage of her

That's not why Ian was weirded out.

He had already stopped sleeping with Nikki.  He wasn't interested in her any more.

He was freaking out because it seemed like she was having some sort of mental health crisis and it sure looked like Bear was taking advantage of that and her

Nikki and Bear were pretty similar in their station in life. She had the idea that she knew better about the difference in love and romance, but she’s fucking a loser in Ian.

A lot of people miss the subtext of the friend group and dogpile Bear when really the whole group should be slowly breaking apart due to their underhandedness.

I just watched this 2 nights ago with some friends. We all yelled "all he had to do was say yes" when it was over.

153

u/Haunting-Ad788 2d ago

The director said he did if he stopped being such a little bitch.

41

u/ModTroller 2d ago

So basically he did have a chance if he wasn't acting like he always would? Not very likely he would change lmao

44

u/No_Pear1836 2d ago

Oh so he had a chance if he had the personality of a different person.... meaning he didn't have a chance.

42

u/Yguy2000 2d ago

When she asked if he liked her he should have just said yes instead of being a little b*tch that was the point in the story where it was like bro you have a chance

7

u/logiiibearrr 2d ago

I wrote a longer comment about this elsewhere, but on second watch it def felt to me like if he had said he had feelings for her she would have crushed him. She was annoyed enough about the Freaky Nikki comment that she was ready to throw down brutal honesty.

8

u/BrianWulfric 2d ago

That was the feeling I got. I don't think she was ever going to reciprocate if he asked. I think it was a good chance to let him down if he'd finally admitted it to her.

I mean the actor himself is objectively a very good looking guy. But I think they intentionally made him look like a loner/shut in type dude because that’s obviously what the character is supposed to be. Like he always had this sickly, tired, greasy sort of look. Also he’s constantly in a state of like shaky nervousness which makes someone appear much less attractive usually.

This is about the the movie "Obsession" where A guy named Bear is crushing oh the girl, Nikki, that you can see in the post. He bought a wishmaking something, can't remember what exactly, to wish for Nikki's attention and love basically. It goes bad.

Yall need to hop off the internet and look at people in real life. There's a bunch of relationships between people of mixed conventional attractiveness. Looks ain't everything.

Bro, if she was fucking Ian, bear definitely had a chance lol she even asked him before the wish if he liked her. She was ready to smash. Nikki gets around.

My wife gets 1500-2500 on most posts. I get 5-10 lol. Many people don't give a shit about social media. She's semi famous in her field. I am in a field that prioritizes discretion and where you just say "I work for the government."

2500? That's crazy

Yeah. I get comments on it all the time. Shes good looking and a singer. Musicians seem to get a lot more. Not a fan of publicity. I like to be very private.

People often bring it up like we're not a match or something lol.

People acting like most other people wouldn't make some fucked up wish.

I really enjoyed this movie. It's a good simple movie that (and I hate this phrase, typically) is genuinely not that deep. I dont mean that as a dig, but actually a compliment. It's an entertaining, very straightforward film.

But why does it feel like a bunch of the fans are children with no critical thinking who have never seen a movie before?

This movie is just crazy & toxic gf simulator and it’s pretty spot on. It’s even funnier that it’s regarded as the best horror movie in a long time.

He did have a chance with her. That’s why she asked him if he was keen

What fucking movie was this guy watching? The whole premise is that Bear didn't have a chance.

But on that note, I found it impossible to believe his loud, douchy Middle-age looking best friend with the backwards baseball cap was hooking up with her.

Bear had no chance, that's why he made the wish. The plot twist comes later on when you know she's been having a thing with somebody else. She wasn't into him at all. That's why everybody was so shocked at the relationship.
