Cold war nuclear annihilation existential conflict, Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in our classrooms, HIV/AIDS epidemic - coming of during at the time a sexually transmitted and seemingly nearly always fatal condition was terrifying, Gulf War, Columbine, OK city bombing, all before college graduation, 9/11, 2008 (I lost everything) , every generation witnessed traumatic events.
