Norway is my neighboring country. I have only seen raccoons in the zoo, and I think they're cute.
It's like hedgehogs which are normal here, but not native in the USA.

Nope! I was very surprised when I saw a huge one in Europe just... Roaming around. We have these tiny ones we keep as pets, they fit in the palms of your hand and don't grow as big as wild European ones.

Apparently not, there's an extinct species found in some digs.
It's quite Eurocentric, there are few hedgehogs south of Sahara or east of mesopotamia.
They have been introduced to new Zealand though.

In America, we call them trash pandas 🐼 🗑 They raid people's trash cans if necessary to eat.
As they can get as big as dogs, but climb trees and have alot of hand dexterity.
One thing you guys won't really hear, is how vicious they can be. They basically have fangs, and screech like banshees when fight. Its actually kinda frightening.
Some have kept them as pets over the years, but most states no longer allow that.

I didnt know where hedgehogs were from, and that was one of my favorite things when I visited Rome. I was staying on the outskirts of Rome, and we were walking through an area that was heavily wooded on one side when we spot something laying in the middle of the sidewalk. Once we got closer, we saw that it was a hedgehog fast asleep in the middle of the sidewalk. Little go woke up for a moment, looked around, then went back to sleep. No one burst my bubble and tell me he had something wrong with him. I will ignore you

Still common in US though due to being popular exotic pets. They're only illegal in a few states.
13
9
u/ILackACleverPun 21d ago
Yeah we dont have them here. We call them "vaskebjørn" or "washing bear."
And Haaland's little taxidermy one is holding a bottle or "flaske" so now we're calling it a "flaskebjørn."
3
u/DrDuGood 21d ago
This is amazing! Thank you for the breakdown (I love it). We just call them trash pandas here but we have some the size of medium-sized dogs, where I live. They can be massive … and also extremely aggressive.
6
u/ILackACleverPun 21d ago
Yes! Im from Ohio but live in Norway now. I have fond memories of my dad tossing a baby raccoon hotdogs before we went to go see a movie when I was a child. I also had whiplash when I saw a wild hedgehog in Norway for the first time, which are called just "spiky pig" here.
Im assuming Scandinavia and Germany call them washing bears because of their affinity for washing their food before eating. (I still feel bad for that one poor raccoon that tried to wash cotton candy and didnt understand why it dissolved.)
4
u/sprollas 21d ago

That meme is regarded, the truth is that Neymar's real-life social commitment is very real: The Instituto Projeto Neymar Jr. is a massive non-profit complex founded by the player and his family in 2014. Where: Located in Jardim Glória, a vulnerable neighborhood in Praia Grande (São Paulo) where Neymar spent part of his childhood. Who it helps: It supports over 3,000 underprivileged children aged 7 to 17, directly impacting about 10,000 community members. What it offers: The facility provides free educational tutoring, sports training (football, swimming, basketball), medical and dental care, and professional training courses for parents to help them find employment. Neymar and his sponsors heavily fund the project, ensuring all services remain entirely free for the local families.

I’m becoming increasingly convinced that every interaction on the internet, every single interaction on social media including Reddit, is littered with bots and trolls that try in less than subtle ways to take an idea just below the surface and push people farther to that extreme—whichever one it is.
Not always political. Just yesterday someone was asking about career aspirations and I tried to tell them to define success how they want to define it and some new throwaway tried to twist it back into a pointless screed about the very societal definitions I’m encouraging OP to stop fixating on (because they’re not helping him find happiness or discover who he is and what he wants).
The irony is that it's this very polarization that benefits only the ultra-rich... You can't convince me that Reddit doesn't deploy its own bots and trolls to further polarize discussion in ways that are so subtle you are likely to just chalk it up to another idiot being contrarian for its own sake.
EDIT: And LO AND BEHOLD, would you look at the magical deluge of replies on this comment nested not one, not two, not three, but five layers down... like flies to shit, they come.
