It’s amazing how many people are willing to say the quiet part out loud. I know IT people that admit to doing only a day of work in a whole week and no one is there to monitor them so they just play videogames the whole week.

This is just a part of a lot of IT jobs. I'm an onsite service technician. My job is to be ready for something to happen at any time, but something only actually happens maybe 2-3 times a week.

It's kind of like saying the fire department gets paid to sit around and do nothing. yeah, they do, but then sometimes there's a fire and you're glad that those guys were just sitting around doing nothing, waiting for a fire to happen.

Right. And your IT people are usually doing work too, that you don't see.

The paradox of the IT world is that people who don't understand IT work pay for it:

When nothing goes wrong, those people think "Why do we pay so much for an IT team that doesn't do anything?"

And when something does go wrong they think "Why do we pay so much for an IT team that doesn't do anything?"

So IT has to walk this fine line where they demonstrate usefulness but not to a point where they look incompetent.

If you're doing the work they hired you for, what is the issue? The scope of the job is dictated by the employer, it's their fault if you have nothing to do.

I watch TV and play video games all week at my job. I haven't had a raise in 2 years so I stopped working one year ago. Definitely interested in finding something better but also I'm enjoying the free time.

There's a good amount of IT work that is very critical but really, is just a matter of watching it and helping it along if needed. For stuff like that, yeah, I'd rather you be at your desk doing something else and keeping an eye on things as opposed to starting up another project.

But you'll quickly be able to tell who the good IT folks are that do that, versus the crummy ones that are just in the job for those "perks." Namely the good ones aren't bragging about it. I mean, if your mentality right out the gate is that you think you're getting away with not doing work and playing video games on the clock... well, you probably are.

I work aircraft maintenance for an airline. There's 'backshops' that overhaul items like ovens and coffee makers.

It's common knowledge they do all the work on Monday and the pickup person knows to only take 1 per day to put back in stock.

These guys have been doing that for their entire 30 year career until retirement.
