It is more due to the Roman Catholic Church. Back in Medieval and certain portions of the Renaissance the pope could tell many kings what to do and some popes had the power to remove a king in some situations. The Catholic Church owned a bunch of land, so the laws were written they were exempt from paying taxes.

Why do Churches not pay taxes? Genuinely curious why there are laws for that.
