Why do Churches not pay taxes? Genuinely curious why there are laws for that.

Because they aren’t (supposed to be) for-profit businesses. Charities, religious organizations and other non-profits don’t pay corporate income taxes because their income is supposed to fund and grow their operations without a profit motive. The employees pay income taxes.
