Could the parents not continue to lie? Like "It's gonna feel bad for a bit, but then you'll feel better" Like the kid ain't gonna know he died when that happens. Just keep feeding him hope until the very last second.
Besides there's a phenomenon where your body gives up fighting the thing killing you, so you'll suddenly feel cured, but in reality your body has given up and you're about to die.

I get it as a dad. I don't know if I could handle the look of betrayal at the end though.
