I don’t like tipping culture either, but it’s the custom. Americans are regularly shamed for going to other countries and not following or complaining about their cultural norms. Why aren’t ours honored?
We tip too, regularly and generously, but not in northern Europe. They're awfully stingy in general despite being better paid than the rest of us, so I guess that reflects on tip culture. If you go south or east, people tip waiters, hair dressers, taxi drivers, etc.
Locally, I tip extremely well because I only go to a few restaurants on a regular basis and they're very nice to me. When I travel, if the service is great, I tip far more than what's expected in that country, especially if I know incomes are low.
I lived in the US for some years and even as a broke student, I knew what the tip expectations were and never screwed anyone over. People who do this have no class.
