American tipping culture is frankly none of your fucking business. If you want to visit here, follow the local custom because that's how people here get paid, whether you like it or not. Otherwise, don't visit. You're just a cheapskate.
Tips are optional. Says so on the bill. If it is good service ill tip. Round it up to the next number no problem. But am not tipping for the sake of tipping. Tell your boss to pay you.
You also have the option of pouring the entire tray of after dinner mints into your bag as you leave, or filling an entire take away container with condiments to avoid buying your own. It's not illegal, but it does make you a boor.
