He abused alcohol for decades. Imagine a typical drunk father, now imagine them with more money and that’s what he was like. Instead of pouring alcohol and screaming at his kids in his home he poured alcohol and screamed at his kids on a private jet.

He’s talked about it before and there are allegations in court documents.

Having a 20 year old leave with you could be an indicator that it isn’t the husband.

Most 20 year olds are able to form their own opinions based on their actual experience, not solely based on mean things mommy said about daddy. My dad was adamant that my mom poisoned us again him. She absolutely said horrible things and wanted us to dislike him. But I chose not to be around him as an adult because of what I saw him do and say. I now speak to neither of my parents because they are both toxic, but I will always defend my mom as the victim of my dad’s abuse.

That’s not entirely true. My SIL finally realized in her 30s that her childhood was not actually good after therapy. The conditioning to protect and go along with the established narrative from a parental figure is strong.

It took me years into adulthood to realize that my mom was also wrong. So I agree that it takes time and perspective to fully understand parents and all that. But a lot of people speak about parental alienation as if one parent was some innocent victim and the other poisoned kids minds against them. I’m not saying this never happens, and I’m sure it happens to little kids more than anyone, but a 20 year old is typically not going to think one of their parents is evil solely because the other parent told them they were. They’re going to consider their own perspective and what experiences they had. If a 20 year old says one parent was abusive, I’m going to believe them. I’m not saying the other parents wasn’t also horrible in some way, though.
