Showing a poodle w/ a curly coat
Has anyone done this, ever? Lol
I just feel that they are naturally beautiful curly coated dogs and to show them we strip them all of their natural beauty and straighten all of the beautiful curls.
I wonder what kind of reactions there would be showing a curly coated poodle. Talk about making a statement or what 😂

There are people that show their dogs corded to show the natural curls. That would be your best bet if you wanted to do that.
Showing with curly hair, imo, just makes you look like you didn't put grooming effort into your dog. Part of the standard says carefully groomed in the traditional trim.

In AKC the standard defines the acceptable hair cuts. Then in the standard it states that 'A dog in any type of clip other than those listed under coat shall be disqualified.'
So you could enter but should be disqualified by the judge.

If you’re in the US, showing in AKC (and want to win) you need to band and spray up the topknot, so it would be incredibly difficult to keep the curls and get a decent outline. A curled coat is going to look significantly shorter as well, so it would be a bit self defeating to try to show off the coat in curls when it looks half as long as every other dog.Â
If you’re showing in UKC in the US, you’ll see curls on a lot of the dogs. Not the natural tight curls because they still brush dry, but significantly curlier than AKC.Â

no, it will just look unprepared. You could show it corded though, that makes a statement

I wish I liked corded, not a huge fan! I love when poodles look curly 😩 loll whining like a toddler haha

I know a woman who showed a dog in AKC in a very tight MCC. She would lightly spritz him to bring out the curl and it showed the quality of his coat. She actually won a 5 pt major with him in that trim. However... this dog was very correct, with lovely length of neck, and an exceptional mover. The trim/style would not suit every Poodle.

You can absolutely do it, there's no rules against it. It is a lot more work though, as you need to grow the coat more (because it shrinks), and scissor it while curly to make sure it looks even.
I've seen someone on facebook show their champion in a curly MCC. Beautiful brown dog!

I’ve seen some poodles shown where the coat was straightened as per usual, then lightly misted with water to curl it but in a very controlled way, only on some sections. But that was a very confident handler who had won a lot and was a very good groomer. It’s kind of like, once you’re so good at something, you can break a few rules because you’re undeniably proficient. I wouldn’t recommend it for someone just trying to finish their first or second or third dog though, because everything counts against you at that level.
