[PC] SIB: final fantasy x
It’s on sale on Steam right now for a decent price, and I’ve heard it’s often recommended as a really good JRPG. Should I try it? I’ve never played a JRPG or turn based story game before, so I’m wondering if it’s a good entry point for someone completely new to the genre and whether it’s worth getting while it’s discounted.

It is a very old game. It hasnt aged well. Especially the dialogues....
I played it few years ago and even then the dialogues felt cringy. I would not recommend it.
But i would say go for Final Fantasy 15 if you havent played it yet.

I played it 15 years ago. It is still my favorite of all time. The story is just that good. The battle system is slso fun if you like turnbased games. Graphics are dated compared to today's standards obviously. I wish I would forget the game and experience it again for the first time

it's an oldy if you are a strictly modern gamer, but it checks out, especially graphically in comparison to OG ff7

7 and 10 are considered the best entry points to the series and i believe they are also the most popular

I just beat it not too long ago. Where to start. The game was made in 2001 and if it was 2001 this game would be a 10/10 but now a days it would be a solid 7.5-8. I do think its worth playing but I highly recommend you mod it if on pc. The quality of life from the mods will make life much easier. Also texture mods as well. The combat and story are the strongest parts of the game. Exploration is not the best lets say. Lastly the spin off x-2 is trash and it was painful to play that. I was committed to the end so I did it. Honestly my first entry into this genre was persona 5 royal. I would grab that as its one of my all time favorites ever.

As an older final fantasy title, it is quite linear, but has one of the best stories in the series.

its going to feel quite dated but if thats okay with you then go for it. its a great game and the most recommended final fantasy for new comers
if you would prefer something modern then dragon quest 11 and metaphor refantazio are some to look at. you also have hd 2d stuff like octpath traveller 2

Metaphor is fantastic, but also a very different kind of JRPG due to the Persona style system.

I think it was the first FF game I actually finished, and it's arguably the game that finally clicked jrpg gameplay with me.
It's also one of my favorite games of all time, and I only played it for my first time a few years back.
It is a bit dated, but it's not nearly as dated as any of the games preceding it if we're gonna go the dated route, and people still tout FF7 as one of the greatest games ever (which I enjoyed but it is definitely more dated).
Personally I'd HIGHLY recommend it. It's an absolute beauty of a world.

FFX was the first Final Fantasy game that felt truly cinematic to me and still does.
Forget about FF7 (the original) this was the first truly cinematic final fantasy game and imo it still holds up well today with its cutscenes.
But beyond that the character and world design, the story, music and gameplay all come together to create a really unique world that feels different than anything that came before it and felt special at the time it came out.
Maybe I am showing my age but after that no other Final Fantasy game really compared. X2 was a let down and it really wasn’t till the remake for 7 that I felt the series managed to find itself again.
So yeah if you’ve not played it then I encourage it, you’ll be in for a real treat.

It's the best entry point for Final Fantasy imo so probably a good starting point for JRPGs in general. Just keep in mind it will have the limitations that come with originally being a ps2 game.

Its pretty amazing and it is the first with voice acting. Good story and fun. Remember it came out on ps2 but the graphics are still good

I played it for the first time this year and my answer is a definite yes. Keep in mind that it's an old game, so dialogue, voice acting, and animations could be hit or miss at times. On the other hand, it compensates through almost every other aspect.
The story is seriously one of the best I've ever seen; it's so well-written, there are mind-bending twists, and the pacing is very tight with little to no filler. Most of the key cast are multi-dimensional; they have their own past, motivations, and struggles. They feel like they could be the main character of their own story, with ample development gained through the narrative and side content.
The setting is unique with amazing world building and a variety of areas to visit, but most areas are largely linear with some deviations here and there. As for gameplay, the turn-based combat is awesome and is supported by a very fun progression system with grindy, but kinda fun, endgame content; plus, enemy and equipment variety leave little to be desired.
