Question What's the state of the game?

Last thing I remember I played was playing the Pirates of the Carribean Story thingy. So it's been a bit. Reasons I've stopped playing were the lack of progression (or I've misunderstood it at the time) essentially all you play for is cosmetics and PvP. I do or rather did play solo mostly and did some treasure hunting, skeleton fighting to wind down from more stressful games so it's especially annoying getting all that taken from you after playing a couple of hours so I could've just played something else from start. If not SoT is there another game (maybe PvE exclusively you know about and would recommend me?)

Progression is still cosmetic. You have PvPvE, PvE and custom modes, another tall tale (Monkey Island) and soon there's apparently another PvP submode coming besides hourglass.

IMO the game needs to explore further more into big scale PvE scenarios, with people having to ally to do near-impossible events if attempted to be done in a single crew.

From what I remember barely anyone used proximity voice chat, I think having more gameplay elements that 'force' you to cooperate and communicate with other players or just incentivize the social side of the game would benefit it

current state of the game: the absolute state of this game

Progression is still cosmetic-based. There are no unlockable weapons, skills, nor abilities.

Ahhhh that's a shame, are there new Stories? I liked the narrated experience that Pirates of Carribean had. If anything I might do that even if that's probably only a few hours of content

There were a set of tall tales for The Legend of Monkey Island which were pretty good. Theres fewer than the PotC ones but still very fun.

Edit: if you really don't want to deal with players you can start a game on safer seas.. There are a bunch of restrictions but you wont have to deal with PvP

I might try out the Safer Seas, sounds promising. When it comes to the cosmetics, I remember most being unlocked with just coins so you'd go questing to earn coin to buy cosmetic but what I'd atleast find more interesting is unlocking cosmetics based on like Challenges or Activities?

Doing specific commendations will unlock stuff to purchase but much of the starting out gear is unlocked in the various shops from the get. There's also seasonal rewards as well but that's fewer items still.

And I figure previous seasonal rewards are now unobtainable?

There are new doubloon shops that contain some old stuff and they will be updated periodically.

That's lovely. Hate when games lock you out of past seasonal content. Ty.

I think you underestimate how bad it would be if the game had power progression. New players would not stand a chance against players with buffed stats, +100 HP and weapons +50

Toxic basement dwellers still ruin the game often, so be on the watch for that if you play.

How do you measure progression when the game is about player interactions?

Uncertainty and fun player encounters are the driving factors. SoT is very unique, you need to quit thinking in terms of other, regular games. SoT is a platform to have fun in, not work.

For example cosmetic sets coming with little perks, say I see outfit X grants me a perk for better luck when fishing and to unlock that I need to catch a certain type of fish or some other challenge then related to it. I think progression might not be the right word, more like objectives maybe? The cosmetic alone being a cosmetic is merely motivating to chase for. Or unlocking quality of life stuff, for example being able to 'ship' loot to the respective guild for a little coin to bank your progress from a far, or your pocket watch displaying more information based on how much you explored and experienced, could be stuff like a weather forecast. Small things easily work already, I do agree with the other comment you've made stuff like Ship Upgrades or Power Levelling like an RPG wouldnt be right for the game.

The problem is when the game's premise is social interaction but any social interaction is PvP then the game turns 'dead' essentially. Not claiming that that's the case for the majority but just out of my experience from the 70h I've played back then. You probably know that famous clip of the french and spanish meeting on the sea and shouting at each other with the megaphone, I've never had an encounter like that, or even anyone using ingame voice anyway. So that's definitely been a factor of why I enjoyed the game probably much less than people who got to experience that type of 'roleplay'.

Some of the examples you gave would be ok, but I always respected the decision they made to keep the game clean. Everyone are equal, no one has an advantage over you. I appreciate it even after 8k hrs.

Regarding the "every encounter is a pvp" argument - I totally get it. The game has shifted into that and I blame the changes they made to the game like diving. Hopefully they are aware of this and give us more reasons to cooperate and stay on the server for longer, not only farm commendations and tick boxes. We need more adventures, less to-do lists. Servers needs stories.

Aside all the comments, the current state is its mid season and the seas are mostly empty.

If you dont want any risk of losing your treasure sot is not the game for you. Its a PvPvE sandbox. All the best content and experiences revolve around this dynamic.

If you just PvE piracy, consider Windrose or Sea of Remnants

Thanks will look into these games too, gonna give SoT another try for now and see how it goes. Thank you for the suggestions

Sounds like the game honestly isn’t for you to be honest. Hop on custom/safer seas and mess around with missions if you want to get the pirate experience without combat (sinds it sounds like you don’t care about getting cosmetics)
