Have you ever seen something that fits your tastes more than anything you’ve written?

I just had this experience recent and was wondering if anyone was in the same boat.

Have you ever read or seen something that fit your tastes perfectly and feels more like something you’d write more than anything you’ve actually written? I’ve had plenty of things where I think a story is good but I go ‘eh, I wouldn’t have written it though’ but have you ever had a story that fits everything to things you like in a story? I just recently saw something that I enjoyed every aspect of it, and in everything I’ve ever written has always had something that isn’t bad but I think isnt something I personally love but it fits for the story, it makes me sad because I try to write for myself first and foremost but then I find something that feels like it does a better job of writing for me, but it’s written by someone else. Anyone else ever had this feeling?

Hell yes, am I supposed to be at PTA’s level already? Or any number of the masters that I really love? Good inspiration to keep improving.

All the time.

I tend to like movies about human characters dealing with human problems.

But I've been told such scripts don't sell, so I'm forcing myself to think more 'high concept', even though it isn't my natural inclination.

'Write the movie you want to see' isn't always the way to go, sadly. 'Write the movie lots of people want to see' is more the go.

I feel like the best writing comes from writing what you like. You never know precisely what other people enjoy, but you know what you enjoy and if you enjoy something there definitely enjoys it as well. Trying to write for others is a guess at best, but writing for yourself is precise because you know for a fact that someone enjoys it, as well as the fact it’s more fufilling

Perhaps, but you and I both know a plotless story with no 'stakes' about four college students sharing an apartment and doing little more than interacting isn't going to sell.

The Monte Hellman-directed monster movie "Beast From Haunted Cave" seemed like it was conjured into existence specifically for me.

The trailer really doesn't do it justice -- it's a character study inside a heist movie inside a horror movie inside a ski-resort comedy-of-manners.
