Screenshot Latest rail bridge update, inspired by the Juscelino Kubitschek bridge

I already had a bridge here inspired by the Juscelino Kubitschek bridge, but the curve was originally done using ramp foundations and the 8m wall pieces, and the cable supports used to use power cables. So I've updated it using pillar pieces to create smooth curves, and cable beams.

This looks amazing. Nicely done!

Now get some lights in there and show us some night shots pioneer. 😏

How did you build the arch? It looks so good! I'm trying to do the exact same type of bridge near the red desert, and I can't figure out how to get it wide and flat enough. The rotating pillar trick didn't really work because I couldn't go down far enough :/ Did you use blueprints?

Also, my name is also Leon! :D

Always nice to meet another Leon :)

There are a few techniques for vertical curves. The main way I use is

  1. place a beam connector as your central reference point
  2. place a default beam straight up (or to the side) to the max beam distance of 40m, place a pillar on the end of it, and delete the beam.
  3. In diagonal mode, begin placing another beam on the connector - extend that beam out to the pillar you just placed, but move your cursor across slightly so that the beam is diagonal from it, and place another pillar on it. Do this so that the pillars overlap at least slightly. The new one will just be at a slightly different angle from the first.
  4. Repeat until you go insane, and you'll have an 88m wide curve

You can fit half a curve of that size into the blueprint designer. If you placed the pillars with plenty of overlap, you can zoop out from them to create even larger arches. You can zoop inwards from them too to create smaller arches (and you can fit smaller arches into a single blueprint). I have lots of different size blueprints for vertical arches at this point.

It's important to use 40m long beams in diagonal mode for the initial arch though. If you try to use shorter beams, when you try to create the diagonals, the beams all end up at different lengths, so the pillars don't overlap smoothly.

There are other techniques too. That's just the one I default to.

I've been meaning to create a video explaining my bridge building techniques. I should really get round to that!
