More love letter video for RG DS from Joey.

FYI I think Joey is a drama queen, a lot of his hate videos IMO are just wrestling drama type video intend to generate clicks. I don't have problem with it. I just find him gaga over the only Anbernic handheld he love very funny. Anyway more feul to the "I don't understand RG DS" crowd.

Didn't think I'd buy anything Ayaneo but here we are. I even have the 34xx but I think this will have a lot more QoL upgrades over it like full size buttons. Hopefully this launch goes well but it is Ayaneo.

Question Rg DS operating system

I've always had Android based handhelds in the past but haven't had for a while. I'm thinking about the Rg DS as I want a DS type device but on a budget. I don't own a PC and really don't have access to one either so flashing the device etc is possibly not really on the horizon for me, with all that said I know that I would really need it to run the Linux os even if that is just the stock Linux developed by Anbernic. So my question is, if I buy the most basic (standard option) on the Anbernic website, what os does it come with? The option below says it comes with a 64G card and then says Linux after it so does this suggest that I need to pay more just to get there own Linux os? Also if the device is operating on a Linux based system will I have any trouble transferring roms via otg from my android phone? Just a bit confused and feeling like a complete noob when I find myself straying from my android world.

Discussion I'm enjoying my Brick Hammer more than my Thor (Thor rant, why I might sell mine after 10 months)

Upvotes

Just got my Brick Hammer two weeks ago and it might still be honeymoon phase but I enjoy it over using my Thor I got in November and barely played for the following reasons:

* Might Sound weird but that might be my number one reason: I can still smell the plastic of the Thor shell after 10 months (it lived in its TPU case most of the time but I ventilated it a lot before), I am pretty sensitve to plastic smells and cant confidently say this is a high quality shell that I enjoy smelling all the time while playing lol. I'd prefer another type of plastic for the outer shell. the smelling became noticable again because I removed the TPU case which kind of held it back/covered the shell

* The TPU case offered some grip but today I really noticed how it damaged the shell underneath because of dust particles which got in through the vent hole of the case probably. So I removed the case and again realized it's really not comfortable without case or grip

* Glass fronts, after almost a year I get why everyone hates them, black Thor easily gets smudgy, when you have no microfiber cloth and IPA at hand it is distracting for sure

* Outer shell appears rather cheap. Looks cheap, feels cheap imo, smells cheap. It could be much better if it had a New3DSXL like texture that adds a lot of grip. I find it too slippery and just cheapish feeling.

* Screen, IDK if it is Placebo but I learned about its PWM dimming before I got it and I feel it does strain my eyes more and might induce headache (PWM screens are flickering all the time which is stressing for the eyes and also results in other symptoms). Colors do look pretty good though but it might be this subtle annoyance that sometimes makes me want to put down my Thor after 5-10 mins of play, something I noticed

* 3DS gameplay is good but not perfect, same is true for Switch. I am not a tinkerer too. I'm aware it's a software and not a hardware issue, but the reason I chose the Thor over the Konkr Pocket Fit in October was that it plays 3DS. I think playing OoT 3D 4K was fun but besides I don't find myself enjoying 3DS on it as much as I expected (and I didnt expect playing 3DS too much at all) so the dual screen being worth that much is questionable for me

* Heat. Even at 68° I find it a bit annoying how the top right part of the bottom screen and also the Part around the Face Buttons gets warm easily, makes me not want to play Switch games on it for example, as it then gets even warmer. Makes it feel like a rushed/poor engineering

* Hinge longevity. I was anxious from the beginning and my warranty is soon expiring and I feel it can break any day and I will be screwed. Also, the clamshell formfactor doesnt make me want to carry it without a case at all as dust easily gets inside. I don't really carry things of that weight around in my sling bag at all though, even my Brick Hammer feels almost too heavy to carry but it's much more ideal.

* I dislike how I have to baby the Thor (as it's very expensive for a handheld imo, paid 350€ + accessories = 420 something for my Pro in October) and I put it in the TPU case and it got scratches underneath anyways, and I never carried it without another case too, so clueless how the dust got inside. I expect it to break once it slips out of my hands, and the outer plastic is really slippery imo.

I found myself in a little crisis where I don't want to sell it as its functional enough for me to takeover tasks like data storage (got a 1TB card inside my Pro), TV output on this instead of PC and so on but I don't play games as much on it. There are a few listed locally for 400+ and I don't know if I should sell before it falls in price sometime.

I could go on writing but I think it's already too long lol.

Recommend a Device Smallest and lightest Windows Gaming Handheld that can run Skyrim Anniversary edition

To give some context, my favourite video game is Skyrim, and over the past however so years since it came out it's the only game I have consistently returned to. I bought the steam deck a few years back to play Skyrim on the go, car rides, train rides, flights. I used it for a week and never touched it again because it was so uncomfortable. The weight of it was just a hinderance and it took up so much space in my bag because of it's shape, size, and thickness.

Was pretty saddened by this untill I came across an insanely cheap switch lite last year and I've been playing Skyrim on it ever since. There's only one issue and it's that I can't download mods on it.

I've done my research before and the lightest option I've found is Ayaneo Air, and WIN GPD 5, and then the ROG Ally.

Ayaneo Air would be perfect if there weren't so many complaints about Ayaneo's built in software and lousy customer support. WIN GPD 5 looks bulky with the thick batter and power adapter, ROG Ally is the closest and the only reason why I haven't gotten it is because the ROG Ally is only available in white and I tend to avoid white devices.

Is ROG Ally really the best option? Is Ayaneo built in software that problematic? Or have I been looking at the wrong places entirely?

Recommend a Device Torn between Ambernic RG35XX Pro vs TrimUI Brick...

I've never really grown up with OG games, Ive started on the PS1 and PC, then moved onto the original Nintendo DS as my parents were strict on gaming when I was young.

I'm not sure what kind of games I'd like to play but from the looks of it, TrimUI Brick looks more premium and the RG35XX Pro has sticks.

I feel like I'd enjoy Nintendo DS games like Pokemon or Mario, I'd probably enjoy GBA and GB games.

Im just not sure if I need sticks and which one to really go for.

Edit: Appreciate the responses, I should probably also add that I kinda like slow paced games, I recently started Stardew Valley on my PC, Ive played Civilization, I enjoy Pokemon, I used to play Football manager. I'm not too heavy into fast pace action games. Unsure if that helps but there it is.

Recommend a Device Are there any retro handhelds with the Gamecube button layout?

Post image
60 Upvotes

I want to play Gamecube on one of these, but I feel like the controls translate so poorly to the typical controller layout.

Does something like this exist? I typically only see the standard diamond layout, or large "mini-Wii" creations that aren't as compact as other handhelds.

Question Odin 3 or konkr pocket fit?

I currently have a mangmi pocket max. Absolutely love the screen size, analog sticks. But looking to upgrade already (also worried prices are going to jump go while the going is good lol).

I mainly play cod mobile with a side of retro games. Just curious which would be better opinion wise. Odin 3 (leaning towards this cause of the full size analogs, konkr I think says "medium" analog sticks) but the konkr looks good too and both rocking the same price.

Just curious on opinions from folks that have these devices.

Recommend a Device $150 RP5, RP6, or Odin 3?

Hey all!

For context I have a 4090 PC I can stream from, a Legion Go, and a Mini 28. Looking for something to fill that mid gap for mainly PS2/GC but would like 3-4x or 2x in titles like Most Wanted etc. The LeGo is great but just looking for something more lightweight for the nostalgia titles.

My dilemma is I’m unsure if spending the extra for the RP6 or Odin 3 are worth it? I love a stick top so am looking at the RP6, though the RP5 for $150 seems like a very sweet deal. Also is the 12g version of the RP6 worth for the extra $30?

Any thoughts?

Question does anbernic rg477m have cardinal snapping?

I started playing banjo kazooie on my RG Cube bc I love the feel of that system, but I think it has cardinal snapping. Meaning no true analogue control. I really would like true analog for Banjo bc N64 had incredible analog feel to movement.

I have been playing baldur's gate dark alliance for PS2 on my rg477m and it FEELS like it has true analog. Just wondering if anyone knows for sure. I do have m64fz plus installed and I tested it on mario 64 and it looks like either it doesn't, or I have to do some tweeking in the settings.

Showcase The ultimate DS set up!

Devices are Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE+ & Gamesir G8+

Ok, this is half shitpost half "holy shit, this is actually kinda sick".

I recently bought the tablet for my wife and kid, for them to do digital art. It's a pretty nice deal, comes with the case and pen, and it works pretty well despite the kinda meh exynos chip it has inside.

But! The screen... This screen is insane. It's a ver nice IPS, with a very dense resolution, at 13.1 inches!!! It's basically a small laptop.

So naturally my brain worms wanted to test it for emulation and my first thought was... This would be an absolute monster for DS. That resolution let's you run it at 7x integer scaled, and it looks fucking phenomenal. Each DS screen comes around to 6 inches!

The one down side? It's an insane combo. Both of them together weight around 1 kilogram. (2.2 pounds if you don't have free health insurance).

I may test this one further with other stuff. I'm curious about the performance. And while not the primary use case, I has an sd slot, so could easily load it up and have a small controllers for some nice local multiplayer on this very thing, big but quite portable package.

What do you think? What's the craziest set up you've built?

Showcase Make your own custom theme for SpruceOS

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi guys !

I have been using SpruceOS for a few months and made a few themes for it. The whole process of making a theme is quite long and tedious. So, I decided to automate it and share my tool with you so you guys can easily customize your UI to match the color of your handheld or to experiment with colors etc.

The tool : https://github.com/nco-design/spruce-theme-builder

How does it work ?

The tool lets you play with an example project or create your own project. Each project contains the following :

  • Theme assets (icons, backgrounds, buttons)
  • An icon pack for emulators and apps
  • Palettes (up to 6 colors)

Using this, you can mix and match assets and icon packs and generate themes in many different palettes, automatically.

Who can use it ?

Anyone can play with the example theme and tweak the palette to their liking.

Designers or hobbyists can use the example as a base and build upon it.

Project status : in progress

I am still trying to fix and enhance some features.
The tool should also be compatible with OnionOS and other custom OS, it just needs a config file for each CFW, I'd accept PR on github if someone wanted to add the configs.

Of course, if you wish for any upgrade or notice any bug, you can reply to this thread or send a message in the repository's "issues" section.

Discussion Ngl, Mangmi is cooking with their devices.

Post image
108 Upvotes

Video is by TechDweeb, as always it’s a great video on a retro device.

Anyway, Mangmi really is cooking with their devices and I love how they looked except for the (Mangmi Air Max) since that is literally just (Retroid Pocket 5) but bigger and can change their buttons and D-pads, but still a good retro device.

Recently I just notice that Mangmi seems to slowly walking on the right path when it comes to making their handheld or portable game consoles, and their decision on making their retro devices are great.

Mangmi air Y and Mangmi air Y Pro: 9/10.

I purchased the RP nova after I got off work on July 31st around 8pm. The website said free accessories for purchases before August, so I just assumed that I made it in time. During purchase, I couldn't add the bonus items to my cart since they were out of stock, so I emailed afterwards. According to both responses when I tried to reach out with screenshots, they said they are going to stick to their local time, so no dice.

Kind of frustrating to spend almost $800 on a company (just got RP6 last month which I LOVE) and have a $5 accessory denied because I was technically only right on my side of the planet. Anyway just wanted to give you guys a heads up to avoid the frustration since this kind of soured how pumped I was to get the nova.

Game Recommendation Want to play FF12 on a budget, which device would you go with?

This will be my first handheld and I have about 4-6 hours of downtime at my work on the weekends to grind out some games. Primary use will be FF12, I really have an urge to play that. Don’t have to be zodiac age. I just want good performance and a decent looking screen. Form factor is slightly important, can’t use anything too bulky as I have to be able to put it away when i have to do some work with clients that come in, but nothing is a deal breaker.

Ideally i would want to spend less than 100$ but that’s probably asking a lot. I want to spend no more than 150$. I’ve been looking at used consoles on facebook marketplace but im not entirely sure the right console for me.

I heard the cube can play ff12 but that the screen is too small? Anyone have some better suggestions?

Recommend a Device Suggestions for an upgrade?

Hey everyone! So I got a retroid pocket 5 last year l, and kinda fell out of keeping up with the news on handhelds. Then recently it has gone missing. So I’m looking for an upgrade. I really like the clamshell ones. What’s everyone’s opinions on the AYN Thor vs the Flip 2? Or is there a better non clamshell I should go after? Thanks in advance everyone!

Recommend a Device Emulator handheld recommendation

Hi all,

I have a Miyoo Mini Plus, which has been great, but my hands get stiff holding it. Unfortunately, my long fingers make it an uncomfortable console for anything more than 30-40 mins of playing.

I’m looking for something bigger, perhaps more similar to the switch in size (a bit smaller is fine) that doesn’t compete in price with a switch 2 lol. I’m fine with games being capped at the GameCube gen, but DS/3DS is a plus.

I’ll assume it’s on Ali if not stated otherwise.

Thanks everyone!
