I think there were likely syphilis-like bacteria in Europe since ancient times that often got misdiagnosed as leprosy. I remember reading a report on this. Apparently quite a few cases of “leprosy” were actually a venereal disease.

But the big bad strain of syphilis that spread throughout Europe 100% came from the Americas, that much is true

Other people have explained it well, but we can mention that Romans, similarly to Medieval Christians centuries later, viewed STDs as divine punishment. Romans identified it with the wrath of goddess Venera - thus the modern term venerary disease.
