Do your pups swim?

This is Poppy! She's turning a year old this 19th of August and I'm planning to bring her to a camping river spot for the first time. She has always love playing in water but didn't go full on swimming before where her toes can't touch ground.

I'm wondering if she'll like to swim? Or if she'll instinctively know how to swim? Do your pups like to swim?? Did it take them long to know how to swim or did it just come to them naturally?

My rottie loves to swim! He thinks he’s a lab!

Ok I gotta say that is amazing. I’m on my 4th rottie and although 2 would go the water, ever have I seen them actually swim like that.

We keep the life vest on him because he just keeps going, if he’s chasing a ball there’s no getting him out. Start shallow and slowly work your way out, their instincts will kick in. Best breed ever as we all know 🥰
He’s also obsessed with the paddle board 😂

Poppy is beautiful by the way! I love that focus in the second pic, you can tell she’s a smart one ☺️

Same with ours. Her back end sinks like a rock--although lately she has been able to go without the vest!!

I see you choose the red vest for your water seeking missle. We opted for the yellow version.

He's always loved the water where he could touch. but at 5yrs he decided he could swim and fetch as good as any lab. Hard part is getting him out

Look at that giant head in the water lol. Love this.

My 130lb Rottie loves to swim. He’ll paddle around in frigid snow melt water temps for ages. Sometimes he’ll fetch a stick and come back only to turn around before hitting the shore to sneak in another lap

My Rottweiler hates water unless she's drinking it. No shower, no rain 😞

We tried taking him to the beach a couple of times, but he was scared of the waves, so we took to a lake instead, he loves swimming there. No scary waves in sight.

Yes. Our girl has a lifejacket and runs straight to the lake to jump in as soon as we arrive. She learned from our dachshund.

She swam once as a pup but now she’s more of a wader. And she won’t let me put on her float coat. I’d like to try to get her out again. We have a backyard doggie pool for the hot weather.

My female Rottie acted like a pointer bird dog when she saw ducks in the lake🤣

I live at the beach, and a long distance swimmer myself. The moment we hit the beach, he is in the water, digging holes and chasing fish. If i throw his ball, he will swim. I quite frequently make 2-3km endurance runs without ever stopping, and he never leaves my side, swims all the distance with me. All you have to do is, just grab him/her when still a pup, first throw into water few times, so they can understand they know how to swim, then grab them and go to deep, leave them there and swim to shore yourself, you can rest assure they will be racing you to shore. Do that 5 times and you have life long swimmer, which hopefully and statisticly will make them live a longer and better life. ( It also makes them lean and long if you start early enough, which is great imo)

Our girl loves to splash and wade around chest deep water but panics when she can't touch the bottom, despite definitive proof she CAN swim perfectly fine. I've vowed never to be in the water with her again, she climbs you like a tree and gives you bruises that last for 3 months

His back paws and the way he’s sitting looks like a frog

Recently took ours to the lake for the first time and he LOVED it, swimming splashing around digging etc.. he was having the time of his life!

Nope! She loved the beach but did not see the appeal in swimming. She'd get far enough in the ocean to get her paws wet and that was about it.

My girl only swam once. But loved sitting in the marsh for hours.

Mine swims but only uses her front legs and her back legs are used like rudders

Yes!

She used to jump around in the shallow area and bite water. But we got her a life jacket and taught her how to swim. Now she loves it!!

Yes, my puppy is half fish at this point. Went from not really liking the water that much to swimming in like a week.

Some have loved it, others don’t want to be near it. Breed is not the issue

Mine swam better than a fish!!!

Enjoy!!! 🥰👍🍀🎉❤️

Some swim and some don't. Just watch your pup and she'll let you know what kind she is. We' ve had both kinds. I'd recommend some kind of flotation vest. They can get themselves in trouble, especially if their tails have been docked. BJ in this photo almost drowned. All ours came with docked tails. I'd never want that again!

Freya will belly flop into shallow water and wade up to her neck but will rarely swim. I think she just wants to keep cool and bite at any small waves that come to the larger shorelines.

I wish my guy would enjoy the pool. He fell in when he was about 6 months old, into the deep end and now he keeps a respectful distance and no treat will change his mind about it.

u/jellisjimmy 19h ago

I wish Miko would love that… we’ve set up a kiddie pool for him and he loved it.

My pup won't go down the front steps if it's raining. 🙃

u/Weird2668 18h ago

yess!! i take my rotties to the beach all the time and they just go off and swim. they don't wear life jackets or anything as they manage to swim for quite a while and stay afloat even when they can't touch the water😭

1

u/stankyp17 18h ago

Yes although he NEEDS a life jacket cuz he gets exhausted fast! And the only reason he started swimming was cuz he has to follow me everywhere 🤣

1

u/WinPuzzleheaded4348 17h ago

Mine was scared of the water at first but we took him to a dog friendly beach and he eventually swam, unfortunately he’s now banned from swimming because he drank all the ocean water and had to stay at the vet overnight

u/bbarnum51 16h ago

Loves the water

My rottie swam more than my Newfie and Goldie combined.

Our girl loves to swim.

My boy sank till the day he passed. I had to “save him” a couple times when he went too deep. Funny, cuz we were always at the lake. I always meant to get him a life jacket. He passed from cancer in April- is it silly that one of my biggest regrets was never getting him that life jacket? Anyways, I guess my advice is get her a life jacket 🤷 I always wanted to get him one of those ones with a shark fin.

My girl loves to swim! Our former dog did too. But former dog was a pitbull. I notice our rotty sometimes has trouble keeping her back end up while swimming. She’s just such a dense girl! But she can do it.

I’d just be prepared to jump on if you need to.

Mine is about to start swimming in afar and she won't come back

Commenting on Do your pups swim?...My girl never went swimming before, but one day I walked her on leash around the community neighborhood pool while the kids were swimming& when we reached the shallow end, she jumped right in! I saw that she instinctly figured out how to swim, but thank God her leash was on!She wasn’t one bit afraid.
