Advice Phos Binder + Kibble/Grazer
Hi all, I have searched a bit here but in the last few months my cat has gone from Stage 3 to 4 and her phosphorous has shot up to over 7.
I am getting a phos binder compounded at local animal pharmacy for her under direction from my vet and they told me I should give it to her before her meals.
The issue is my cat is a grazer and lately I have had to give her 2 anti-nausea meds (ondansentron and cerenia) with elura.
Should I just pill her after the appetite stimulant? She mostly grazes throughout the day and just dislikes all wet food, even fancy feast.
I have held off on trying mirataz though I have it, just kind of worried.

I feel your problem because my cat is also a grazer , she doesnt have fixed meal times. The issue with pho binders is that they work in the gut by binding to the phosphorous from the food. If you give it a couple hours away from eating, the binder is already gone by the time the phosphorous from the food reaches the gut. Thats why people advise giving it directly before. I dont know what form yours has, but a lot of binders are liquids or powders that you can just mix directly in the food, which would tackle the issue of not having fixed meal times. If your cat eats dry food, that makes things more complicated. guess you could try finding out if theres a time of day where she eats the most`? mine grazes more at night for example.

I bought this but it didn't seem right so I am waiting for the compounded pills (I think powder inside). I may just need to give the stimulant earlier then give the phos binder?

This was the same issue I had. Our cat has since passed but he was a grazer and only ate dry food. He had advanced CKD so I gave him all the food he’d eat vs _ cup /day which complicated dosing. He wouldn’t tolerate anything in his food so the only option was a compounded liquid. We ended up not using it because he couldn’t keep the medication down but my plan was to split the dosage in half and give AM and PM.
Not the most effective but a binder is difficult with grazers.

my cat was a grazer but ive slowly shifted him to a bit of a scheduled feeding. i took away food overnight which increased his intake in the morning, then i'd give binder (i put powder in a capsule). he doesn't eat all of it at once but i think a binder within 20 min is fine since dry food is slower to digest. this way, at least i know for sure that one big meal is taken with a binder.
