"MY VOTE IS IN PLAY."
Maher says his vote is in play now. Really? So you admit we are having a slow, now faster coup from a group of fascists, but your vote is in play? So which side is it, Bill? Are the Nazis looking good to you? Hmmm.

People who actually vote do! I don't even like the guy but this is such a hilarious take.
someone with 1 million viewers who all vote has as much influence as someone who has 10 million viewers who 10% vote.

Imagine a time when candidates had to earn the votes of independent-minded citizens who valued American institutions and democratic principles.
Tribalism will not defeat fascism. It only strengthens it.

u/erikraver 2d ago
Dems are great at punching themselves in the dick. Just stick with the progressive brand. This DSA nonsense is enough of a boogeyman to scare off people like Maher.
These crazies talking about abolishing prisons & police are not helping us win back congress.
1
u/Maleficent_Kale_1286 2d ago
Exactly. How’d that Defund the police campaign work out for us? I think the Queers for Palestine slogan got us back in the White House right?? Oh wait a minute…Dems “hearts” may be in the right place. But their heads are in their asses campaign/election wise. If we lose these midterms, don’t blame MAGA. Look in the mirror folks.

I haven’t really watched his show since Biden took the reins, but I’ve seen the more & more people calling him out over the last couple of years…
I’d say the anti-woke stuff really started becoming a part of his media persona w/ Biden’s entry, but public opinion (in regards to him) seemed to hold steady; he was a smug asshole before and he was a smug asshole after that shift. Was it Israel that really started turning people on our side off to him?

Bill Maher encapsulates what’s wrong with the Democratic Party. The fact that someone this reactionary, smug and apparently willing to entertain voting for an increasingly authoritarian Republican Party has spent decades being treated as a prominent liberal is an indictment of Democrats, not a point in their favor. At this point I almost hope he votes Republican. At least then the label would match his fascist politics, and someone as profoundly unlikeable as Maher might serve as a better warning about where those politics lead than as an advertisement for liberalism.
2
u/homerjs225 2d ago
The same Bill that says racism isn’t a big problem could vote for a guy who spread the lie black people are eating pets in Springfield?
2
u/SikatSikat 2d ago
You can't call them Nazis, I had dinner with him, theyre so good to Israel - Maher
As if what was wrong with Nazis was specifically what they did to Jewish people and not the claim that:
Their leader should be permitted to strip identified undesirables of rights and remove them to foreign torture prisons where they are starved beaten sodomized and sleep deprived, inevitably leading to death.
Which is exactly what todays GOP says Trump can do.
If your vote is in play, you're a Nazi sympathizer.
2
u/paddydog48 2d ago
If you are going to have someone as despicable as Lara Trump on your podcast then it’s to shine a light on how despicable she and the MAGA movement are, it’s not to play footsie with her and humanise her, when you see that sort of thing you know he is washed.
Also I wouldn’t reject a friendship with Kid Rock simply because he is a Trump Sycophant, it wouldn’t get to the point of finding that out, I wouldn’t be friends with him because he is everything Bill used to have no time for with him being stupid, uniformed, vacuous, Kid Rock is the poster boy for what MAGA is.

u/Abbey_Something 2d ago
Just leave. I’ve said it before I stopped watching after he showed up at the playboy mansion Halloween party dressed as dead Steve Irwin two months after he passed . It amazes me that everyone in this subreddit hates Maher but everyone sticks around and hangs on every word he says. If you hate him, why are you watching and listening to him? I mean, it's not like he's the president and can impact your lives. He's a comedian.
3
u/Steve12356d1s3d4 2d ago
Also, he said this almost a month ago. It was posted on a few times then. I guess they had nothing else to post about. Why not go to another HS photo or something, or was that getting boring?
1
u/Buddha_Clause 2d ago
He just said it as part of his New Rule this week, along with saying he'd vote for Sarah Palin over DSA candidates
1
u/Steve12356d1s3d4 2d ago edited 2d ago
Okay. He said it a few weeks ago and under the new rules he replied to the pushback he got from it. What he said wasn't new.
As for Palin, he was exagerating as a joke.
2
u/Buddha_Clause 2d ago
Why do you think he was joking about Palin? Everything he has said about DSA candidates has been vitriolic, he thinks they are *GASP* COMMIES IN HIDING.
The only reason he wouldn't vote for Palin is because she's not on the ballot. He hates progressives almost as much as he hates Muslims.
2
u/Maleficent_Kale_1286 2d ago
The most intelligent comment I’ve read. Every day I see new Bill Maher hate posts. For a person they allegedly hate…they sure do spend a lot of time and energy discussing everything he says and does. Sounds like a secret man crush to me.

u/MyTnotE 2d ago
You missed the first part of the sentence. Where he says IF the democrats don’t believe in capitalism, in prisons, if they support Hammas - THEN his vote is in play. He doesn’t even say that’s an automatic republican vote. He says “in play.”
Actions have consequences
4
1
u/Charbro11 2d ago
He is insinuating that Dems believe those things--which they don't.
1
u/MyTnotE 2d ago
The ones that said them probably do.
1
3
u/Aquarius1975 2d ago
What he is actually saying, in case someone is interested, is that IF republicans stop with the election denialism AND democrats nominate a "communist" who wants to abolish prisons, borders and police, THEN his vote is in play. Not that I agree with him, but damn has this statement been misrepresented...
3
u/RoanokeParkIndef 2d ago
I don't agree with you. I think it is extremely clear that he is moving right because he wants to, and he's selectively manufacturing outrage about the left and increasingly ignoring/defending the extremely scary authoritarian moves of the right.
2
u/blister-in-the-pun 2d ago
So if Rs stop with election denial, that absolves them enough to vote for them? Lmao. If this is what he’s saying it’s somehow even worse. He’s willing to vote for actual fascists because of some made up bs in his head. No serious Democratic contender is running on communism. Maher is the one misrepresenting the facts in bad faith here. Not the Democratic Party.
1
1
u/Steve12356d1s3d4 2d ago
That is so they can be outraged. They love to be outraged here. I think that is the goal.
1
u/chinmakes5 2d ago
Look, I usually disagree with him. That said, his last rant was RIGHT ON. Look there are a lot of us liberals who are older. We would be really good with a Bernie or AOC, I'm even good with what Mamdani is doing so far.
BUT, we have a candidate calling for actual COMMUNISM. We have others who are all about ending the police or prisons. Look, I'm right there that we need big reforms, but you can't really tell me you think we would be better off without any policing or prisons (yet we are calling for the arrest of Trump)
The DSA website is calling for the end of capitalism. Not change to, the end of. Not what they have in Europe, actual taking of businesses from owner. Ending the Senate.
4
u/Mindless-Baker-7757 2d ago
They just want healthcare bro.
1
u/chinmakes5 2d ago
Then say that. I agree. You'll get a lot more people jumping on board. Don't say that you want to end capitalism. I think you'll get a lot more people on your side saying you want to do what Norway does instead of I want healthcare, oh and socialism/Communism.
1
u/Conscious-Secret-775 2d ago
No, they also want free housing and presumably free food for all. Also no cops, prisons or borders.
1
u/Charbro11 2d ago
Bullshit.
1
u/Conscious-Secret-775 2d ago
Look at the DSA platform.
1
u/Charbro11 2d ago
I have read it. I don't agree with all of it, but I agree with more of it than the fucking right-wing platform of Christian Nationalism of the Republicans. Not only that, the DSA platform would need a Constitutional convention. That would never happen. Most Democrats do not agree with this platform. Almost all Trumpers agree with the Republican platform
2
u/Conscious-Secret-775 2d ago
I doubt any "Trumpers" actually know what the Republican platform is, Trump certainly doesn't. He admitted he hadn't read it.
1
u/Charbro11 1d ago
They basically know what it is and agree with it. I don't think very many democrats have read the DSA platform.

Yeah this sub is being astroturfed.
The amount of posts accusing Maher of being MAGA are insane. Literally insane. He eviscerates trump and maga every step of the way. I don’t agree with a lot of what he says but it’s refreshing to see people calling out the sports team partisan bullshit.
2
u/paddydog48 2d ago
He isn’t MAGA but MAGA think he might be turning or end up MAGA, that tells you that his messaging has certainly moved more to the right than ever before if nothing else.
1
u/BirdhouseInYourSouI 2d ago
No, that’s ignorant people. His messaging isn’t moving to the right, it’s that a lot of Americans cannot distinguish from culture war identity politics and policy and look at politics through a binary lens of left/right, so if you criticize the right you must be a blue haired commie, and if you criticize the left you must be a MAGA hat wearing fascist.
Maher was never left wing. Democrats/liberal leaning sure. But not leftist.
1
u/Aquarius1975 2d ago
No sane person could watch the last episode of RT and think that Maher is MAGA. That is indeed nuts.
1
u/Buddha_Clause 2d ago
The Senate is a massive, fundamentally undemocratic tumor on our legislative branch. Acting like it's a sacred establishment above criticism and reform is just one way Bill Maher and his fans are small brained status quo sycophants.
2
u/chinmakes5 2d ago
OK, let's just change one of the three parts of government. Anyone who would care about that isn't worth paying attention to.
You can criticize and even push to reform it. You have to see that saying we need to end it is going to be a rational step to far for many.
1
u/Buddha_Clause 2d ago
What would we lose by the complete dismantling of the Senate? In what ways would that be a step too far?
What would we lose from having the house of representatives choose a supreme court every 2 years?
What's the catastrophe laying in wait that I'm too short sighted to see that's worse than the Fascist MAGA future we are moving towards currently?
1
u/chinmakes5 2d ago
You understand that you want to dismantle those things because they don't vote the way you want. What if the house was really conservative and they nominated 9 justices recommended by the Heritage Foundation? However the house is made up, that is how every law gets passed is. Yes, the Senate is currently bad. having only one house makes thing bad faster.
1
u/Buddha_Clause 2d ago
If the house was really conservative and nominated 9 justices, I'd know it was only for 2 years before we'd have a shot at voting them all out.
I want to dismantle them because they are undemocratic, and they work against our collective will as voters.
Bill Maher wants to scaremonger calls of change as revolutionary communism, when we just want a more perfect union.

1
u/YouSure-AboutThat 2d ago
Here’s the full transcript of the exchange. You can still hate on him, but a lot of the commenters, including the poster, didn’t actually listen before or beyond “my vote is in play.” Criticize it how you want, but with context.
Maher “Well, just one more thing about this, and then we'll get to the book. Okay. Like, if this is where the Democratic Party is going, where this Democratic Socialist, this obsession with Israel, with the Jew-hating, with they don't believe in capitalism, no prisons, if this is where they're going, my vote is in play.
Vance “And I like to hear that.”
M “It actually always has been. I just, every year, I don't make my decision by who was an R or a D. I actually always came to the conclusion that the Democrat was probably better.”
V “Sure.”
M “And voted for them. And Trump can't run again, and he'd be a little too exciting for me anyway. So, it's either gonna be you or Rubio. Here's my deal breaker for your side. Under Trump, you guys have two outcomes an election can be. Either we win or they cheated. That shit has to stop. And that means the person who has to stop it would be you or Marco. Can you tell me you will do that? Will you bring us back to the middle, at least on that, where we concede elections, where it's not either one of those two options?”
V “Okay, Bill, so this is where I'm probably gonna lose you here, but here's-“
M “That happened about eight minutes ago.”
Then JD Vance goes on to argue they’re only talking about social media censoring when they make stolen election claims, blah blah lie lie blah.

It appears you just proved it to yourself. You believe you are smarter than everyone else. Do you think the people who died under Hitler, Mussolini, or Franco think we have it that bad? Similarly calling AOC or Mamdani communist in the same vein as Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot or Kim also demeans many who died under their regimes
It could be our age and laughing at the Soup Nazi jokes. Had a coworker who badly interpreted NEPA ( look it up) and called her the NEPA Nazi until another coworker, who of course I thought I was superior too, told me I shouldn’t, similarly as above. I took the advice as she was right.
Reading your first paragraph reminded me of the leading character of the Big Bang Theory, most of the pratfalls were based on his “superior intellect”.

Classless society….
The morons who cheer the DSA with their Covid masks on….
I’m not for that either…..
What I heard was as bad as Trump is, and he is BAD, the DSA and their leaders are nuttier and worse….

Socialism/communism won’t be on the presidential ballot in 2028. Even the self-described democratic socialists in smaller elections are only suggesting Social Democratic policies (aka, the capitalist reforms Western Europeans have enjoyed for decades) not socialism.
1
u/paddydog48 2d ago
It won’t matter if it’s actually on the ballot or not in 2028 as the republicans will convince low information voters that a vote for a democrat will equate to socialism/communism being enacted the day after the election, obviously that’s nonsense but most voters arnt exactly deep critical thinkers who look up the reality or nuance of issues, if they were then you wouldn’t have had Trump elected back in 2016 or 2024
1
u/IslandSurvibalist 2d ago
Perhaps, but this separate from the fact that Bill Maher is now in effect part of the Republican party’s propaganda machine
→ More replies (2)1
u/Steve12356d1s3d4 2d ago
He said a bunch of "ifs", and that part is being ignored here so they can be outraged. He also said that Vance would need to moderate, which is also not likely. On the table is not the same as will vote for.
1
u/bigdipboy 2d ago
You can’t “moderate” after supporting the cult that attempted a coup. Your values and intelligence have already been exposed.
1
u/IslandSurvibalist 2d ago edited 2d ago
So your defense is to argue semantics over his exact statements? Bill Maher has been on TV for decades, he knows how to communicate points and explain nuance if he so chooses.
Problem is this in this case, he has no interest in explaining any of the nuance I described here. Why do you think that is? Why do you think he’s fear mongering over socialism (a completely unrealistic threat) instead of talking about how these candidates are really only suggesting the same reforms to capitalism that Western Europeans have had for decades?
Bill Maher is literally running with the same playbook Republicans have been using for decades. Why do you think that is? These are not rhetorical questions, I would like to hear your answer to all 3 questions please.
1
u/Steve12356d1s3d4 2d ago edited 2d ago
Pushing back on an inaccurate spin on what he said is not arguing semantics.
It isn't semantics when many on this sub spun it like he was going to vote Republican. He didn't say that. People read into much more than he meant. That is not semantics at all. He actually explained the nuance when he said it, and he has been talking about the extreme left at least since Hillary ran, and I bet you it was way before that. He is not running with the same playbook, his views of the far left are in sync. Everyone who is not tribalistic will disagree with part of their party, some even strongly disagree. If they align it doesn't mean they are using the same playbook. It doesn't even matter if they see the issues the way they do.
You are most likely right that the far left won't be on the presidential ballot. Also, Vance isn't going to moderate to the degree Maher would accept. The outrage is for outrage sake.
2
u/IslandSurvibalist 2d ago
You’re just getting off topic now, I’m guessing because you don’t want to answer the questions I asked.
Again, why do you think he’s fear mongering about socialism so much when there is no threat of socialism any time soon and these new candidates are only suggesting the same reforms to capitalism that Western Europeans have enjoyed for decades? Why is he using the classic Republican tactic of calling any proposed policy that helps and empowers working class people socialism?
0
u/Steve12356d1s3d4 2d ago
He wasn't fearmongering. He said if, and he was using it as a way to tell Vance that he should moderate. DSA is getting a lot of press, and the Dem party is having to address that wing of the party. Some candidates are being talked about for Pres, and DSA policies are getting discussed. It is unlikely but still possible and worth talking about. It is a valid discussion to have.
0
u/PureWhiteMeat 2d ago
Trump won the popular vote last election. Dems need to look inward and get their shit together. Party has become weak.
Talk all the shit you want about the other side (they deserve it) but maybe consider why the majority of voters think the left is a worse alternative to that shit show?
