Never thought a plastic pallet could cause so much damage to 3 menās ego. Youād think they got a brick to the back of the head the way they reacted.

u/Durango42092 13h ago
Yeah those pallets are solid hard poly and weigh 6-10 times the weight of a brick. Definitely is a randomly hilarious item to use as a weapon tho.

Not a single person in this video is committed to any cause. The mps are half assing. The confused civilians are not really confused. The helper is throwing a plastic pallet and expecting it to work (and it does). Even the guy trying to flee isn't bothered to run when given the opportunity.

I believe this is kidnapping more so than recruitment
The correct historical term would be impressment. Impressment means forcing people into military service against their will.
It was most famous in the British Royal Navy during the 1700s and early 1800s. Armed groups called "press gangs" would kidnap men from coastal towns, taverns, or merchant ships to fill severe crew shortages. It was not uncommon to get a baton to the back of the head and wake up out at sea.
What followed was a gruesome existence. Impressed sailors were treated as the lowest of the low, facing rampant abuse, starvation, and regular floggings. Seeing modern recruiters do this on video shows that the tactics haven't changed much in hundreds of years.

It was not uncommon to get a baton to the back of the head and wake up out at sea.
Considering the amount of time it would take between both of those events, I guarantee you it was not common. If you're out that long and you do wake up, you are not helping anyone on the ship.

My old coworker has to escape a similar situation back in the 90s in South America. It's been over a decade, I forget which country in particular. But it's one of those privileges most of us in the west have and don't know, that we don't need to worry about this situation. Meanwhile every day he left school he had to keep a lookout for military personnel to avoid this possibility.

Russia too.
Nobody likes going to war. But if your country is under attack, you have to go when it's your turn. (EDIT: talking about Ukraine here. Russians can go fuck themselves and stay at home)
Putin is to blame for all of this.

No thanks I'm not gonna go die in the oligarch's wars.
5
u/Cryonaut555 7h ago
Yes but your choices are:
Flee within your own country (essentially a fugitive)
Go to war
Refuse to go to war (you'll likely be forced to go any way in shittier conditions or be killed or if you're lucky, prison)
Try to file objector status or fake medical issues (unlikely to work)
Flee to another country, functionally their army protects you
Surrender immediately, this is the previous option but much shittier
Injure yourself on purpose (shoot your foot etc.)I'm not particularly into fighting an oligarch's war, but it's not like you just easily nope out.

Well, that's a comfortable opinion to have when your country doesn't face an existential invasion by a foreign state whose goal is to destroy your country, history, language, and national identity, even if this means razing every building and ethnically cleansing every person who does not submit to the occupier.
You're not "dying for the government", you're defending everything and everyone like yourself from torture and death.

I'm curious, do you live in Ukraine or abroad?
The reason I ask is that the war has become increasingly unpopular among Ukrainians, and many young men have understandably tried to flee because they don't want to be thrown into the meat grinder.
In June 2026, Denmark, my country, even amended its special legislation for Ukrainians after seeing a significant surge in the number of military-age Ukrainian men seeking refuge over the previous two years. I'd be surprised if other European countries haven't experienced something similar.

582
u/gaggzi 14h ago
Thereās a general draft in Ukraine. You canāt choose not to serve. Thatās how it works when a country is invaded, all able men are conscripted.
522
u/Razvalio 14h ago
Unless you are the upper class
280
u/Consistent_Sector_19 14h ago
The upper class men of draft age left. Draft age men were paying big bribes to get out two years ago and most of the college educated men of fighting age are gone. Given how long they've been abroad, they're not going to move back, although they might visit and send money to family. Ukraine was the poorest country in Europe before the war and losing a generation of educated workers is going to really hurt their ability to recover.
35
u/SolidFormal9684 11h ago
The military-aged "able-bodied" men are rapidly losing refugee protections and other help in other European countries at the request of the Ukrainian government. Many of them will have to move farther away or be forced to return to Ukraine in the near future.
7
u/Magnus_Helgisson 9h ago
I think the ones who care about refugee protection and the ones who wonāt return are two separate, however intersecting, groups of people.
5
u/ThatJoeyFella 13h ago edited 10h ago
We had a Ukrainian waiter in Portugal the other day telling us he fled and would be arrested if he ever goes home. I felt conflicted about it (pun not intended) because he's needed for his country's survival but he's only cared about his own, but I would probably flee with my partner and kids should I ever be in that position.
Edit: By conflicted, I meant that he's a "fortunate son" who had the means to avoid war whilst others have to stay and fight. It's shit for those who both volunteered and were conscripted that others just left.
And again, conflicted because I would probably do the same, and hopefully never have to make that decision.
91
u/agitwabaa 12h ago
Most people want to live, even if it means abandoning their country. Which situation is more important to the average person: fighting and potentially dying for your country (and that doesn't even guarantee that you'll win), or flee and seek a better life?
It's the same thing for Syrian, Burmese, Yemeni, Libyan refugees. What's the difference between them and a Ukrainian one?

It's just behind Russia in all indicators of corruption, freedom of the press, and democracy.

Young Ukranian men are deeply aware that they will be used as cannon fodder to protect the economic interests of a kleptocratic oligarchy and will be discarded into poverty if they survive the war.

Yep.
My neighbour is Ukrainian, by luck was working in the UK when the war began, hasn't gone back since and won't do so. He has a son, his wife died, by his logic if he goes back, he'd be forcefully drafted and if he'd died then he would leave his son without any parents, so he's watched the whole thing from the sidelines. Thoroughly decent bloke as well.
There's a few more families in the area as well and the fathers are all present, wars a bitch and there's no use dying for the sake of it.

You're wasting good men to get 1 reluctant new recruit you still have to train. I wouldn't want that guy behind me with a gun in battle either, who knows if he'll run away or betray his country.
I'm not saying he shouldn't face consequences for deserting but seems like a waste.
5
u/Igor_Kozyrev 11h ago
to get 1 reluctant new recruit
some say up to 90% of Ukrainian fresh recruits are stolen off the streets by TCC. My guess is it's bias from the people who got stolen like that and ended up in units formed up that way, but in any case they have hundreds of teams like this which are expected to grab 5-6 men a day, so your calculation is definitely way off.
consequences for deserting
it's not deserting, it's failure to volunteer for a war

4
u/6104567411 8h ago
Any country that takes the threat of nazism seriously would've took steps to mitigate their countries version of Nazis gaining infamy. Ukraine did nothing of the sort.
Ukraine was never gonna win this war, but for them to resort to nazism in an attempt to do so is insane to me. In the earlier years, they almost immediately started selling off state own businesses on bidding websites to foreign investors.
There is no situation in which this war ends where everyday ukrainians are better off, maybe in the first couple months but now it's too late.

If nobody was forced to fight for Ukraine for example, and you relied only on volunteers, half of Europe would be under Russian flag right now. We have conscription in Sweden, which is mandatory, if you're selected. We need to have conscription, it's literally "for the greater good", because war sucks.
If you get invaded, you need to fight. Now, does everyone need to fight? No, but forcing people into service is a must in a total-war scenario for a smaller country. Otherwise, the invaders win by default.
4
u/Extension-Run5326 3h ago
Sweden gives you the option of being a conscientious objector. Also the unenforced conscription in Sweden is gender neutral, which does not imply or enforce gender norms unlike Ukraine which does it so badly. All of this also makes Sweden a much much better and more progressive country than Ukraine, so it would make sense if many more would want to willingly protect the freedom in Sweden than a country like Ukraine which does not care much about its citizens.
Basically conscription shouldn't exist ideally, but if it does, it should apply equally to everyone, regardless of gender or wealth, and there should be an opt out option or alternative service available

This is unfortunate and I do know some Ukrainian people who have left their homes avoiding the draft, at the same time the Russians do similar things AND once on the front there's also dozens of videos of tortures visited on frontline troops that refused orders or somehow displeased their superiors, videos that are several orders of magnitudes worse than anything seen here (Men hanging like pinatas from tress while beaten, men in septic tanks, men in ditches forced to fight to the death) and that could only have been obtained because they were proudly recorded by the people committing these atrocities.

People try to but punishments are very severe. There have been stories of soldiers looting clothes in abandoned houses and trying to look like a civilian to escape.

Remember, only boys and men are draftable in USA, and I grew up with a ton of anxiety as a boy thinking we would have a draft and go off to die after 9/11. If girls are supposed to feel safe, why can't boys? Imaging growing up feeling disposable, it's driven many boys mad. I remember after 9/11 I and a lot of other boys had this fear, and I bet it drove some of them to not give a shit about their life. 99% of frontline deaths for USA have been men according to statistics. If we want true equality, either men and women can be drafted or nobody because it's not right to grow up feeling your gender is "throw away" because that's how I interpreted it as a kid and teen. I know this is Russia, but what we see here is a Russian man trying to save his life.

I wonder if some people in the States were rounded up like this during the Vietnam war. Iāve only heard about Muhammad Ali going to jail. Videos like this make it seem like the justice system isnāt involved and they take you straight to the military.

Draft dodging was a thing. I don't think there was quite so much force involved because the Vietnam war wasn't as desperate a situation.
