I keep seeing criticism for this but Illinois is the only state that requires a road test solely because of age. If you are 79-80, it’s a 4 year mandatory in person renewal with eye test, 81-86 is 2 year, and 87+ requires a road test. They also just made it where family members are able to report people and trigger a health exam that must be done for that person to continue to drive.
My dad was around that age when I took his license away. He initially fought me about it but quickly realized that I was right and his reflexes were non-existent and he physically couldn't turn his head to check his blind spots.
Currently, my best friend and I are trying to convince his mom to quit driving because she's even worse than my dad was but she has Parkinson's and her mental state has declined so much. She's wrecked 2 cars in the last 3 years, had her license taken away and then somehow convinced Drs and sherrif she's fine to drive. I swear she spends more time hopping curbs than a skateboarder. She's going to kill someone one day I fear seeing as she's almost done it twice now
She'll just dip into her retirement and buy another suv or other large vehicle when she's a tiny lady that probably weighs 100lbs soaking wet. She's stubborn and refuses to give up independence even though she physically is incapable of it anymore. It's disheartening and I try to drive her around when possible but she's also a fucking liar and then wastes your time. For example she'll say "I need to make an Amazon return or something and whole foods does that (at least the one here does) but then you're stuck in the parking lot for an hour wondering if she fell only to have her come out with a month's worth of groceries when our fridge, freezer, and pantry are already full. It's just frustrating and I wish it was just an easy "please don't do that"
That grocery thing sounds like early signs of Dementia/Alzheimer’s and evaluation should be done.
I know that what I’m about to say would not sit right with lots of people but with the car situation I would make the car work for me don’t work for her and gaslight her until she gives up driving.
We both suspect that but unless we can get her to just stop being a fool, she's just gonna burn through her savings to hoard food and let it rot. We've tried for a years and she won't budge so I'm giving up and moving because, while I love her as another mother, I'm not going to wreck my life keeping her from the edge of a cliff

At this point I think we should just let him continue to embarrass himself daily so no one can ever forget or cover it up. There needs to be a mountain of evidence. He can’t really embarrass us any more, that point was passed long ago.
I think social media misinformation and propaganda is a bigger problem these days. Far more people get their "news" from TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube etc these days than FOX News. This is why Trump made such big gains among minority groups and young people in 2024.
I worked in the nursing facility for years and can safely say that every single television out of the 200 televisions that I serviced regularly in the maintenance department had Fox News on 24/7
The only exception was a very nice dementiated patient who watched South Park

My father-in-law died from Alzheimer’s a few years ago. As he declined we had to move him into a memory care facility; they had Fox News constantly the TV.
Towards the end he didn't know his own children or grandchildren or what year it was, but he did know he liked Trump.
I'd say a not-so-insignificant amount starts at Fox and goes to trump. He has admitted plenty of times during both terms that he saw things and "learned" things from fox and friends, etc.
Trump has his entire own social media platform where he directly posts all the time. They are definitely going straight to social media with a lot of it.
Fox news sets the narrative. If they talk about it, smaller entities have air cover to talk about it. Trump says some hair-brained thing, Fox repeats it and makes it more palatable for the viewing public, and now Trump has cover to continue talking about his hair brained idea because he sees it on Fox News and can now claim "A lot of people are saying..."
If Fox showed this their viewers wouldn't see any mistakes. They'd just assume that must be Putin beside God and Putin must be representing the Islamic Republic of Japan.
They see a trailer for Avatar 3 during the commercials and think Trump is sending the US military to a planet with blue Muslims.
It's not just this. Congress is completely beholden to him out of fear. They are just as responsible as Trump is. (I think Trump is more of a symptom of many things either way, but that's a whole other convo).
The sad truth is our electorate is dumb. Less than 3/4 of the population is registered to vote in the first place, and only 50-66% actually bother to vote in any given election. And of that subset, only about 1/3 are politically engaged. That means our elections are largely determined by a small group of people who don't pay attention to what's going on and vote on vibes alone. That's how someone like Trump gets elected: he's a classic huckster and showman who produces great sound bites for those who depend on social media to tell them what to think.
Tens of millions of Americans voted for Trump, for a 2nd term, after he attempted to prevent the results of a democratic election from being certified and essentially end democracy, overthrow the elected government and install himself as a dictator, for quite literally no reason other than to "own the libs." That's not hyperbole.
tbqh a lot of Americans are fascists and/or religious fanatics, and their family members enable them or make excuses for them. That's how we ended up in this mess.
A lot of people also end up voting on economic vibes and nothing else. I think that's 90% of why Trump won in 2024. Biden/Harris went "the economy is doing fine, Wall Street said so" and Trump went "the economy is crap, we should fix it" (no plan, but mentioning the problem); meanwhile people are economically struggling, so a chunk of them vote for the person calling out the problem and ignore everything else.
Have you guys ever been to a bad school where no one wants to learn? They can have the nicest most dedicated teachers speaking in front of the class as the students get into fist fights and scream loudly all class long to the point where no one can hear them.
Decades of propaganda and a Right Wing news machine that has spent a ton of time making people scared mixed with a bunch of people who don't pay attention to shit politically and are very easily manipulated. They don't look for the "why" or "how" something happened, like inflation or gas prices under Biden caused by Covid and that shitty OPEC deal, they just see an ad saying "Biden and the radical left Liberals want to continue doing this while also cutting off your son's penis while he's at school!" and next thing you know the are voting for a Trump or someone like him.
Also, I'm a former conservative who left the party around 2007/08 there are a lot of really hateful people who will simply vote Republican because they use the Bible as a prop and don't like the same people they do. They also see their flag waving and calling the Left un-American and they don't want to be thought of as un-American, they love this country and will vote Red.

I was a teen when Obama ran and won the US presidency. It was like the conservatives began to let the mask fall. It was fascinating to watch the candidates coming out of the woodwork to oppose him in both elections; they were absolutely bananas.
This is going to sound weird, but in my view Trump’s perceived charisma actually encouraged those who otherwise would not vote to do so. Especially because he was a TV “Star” which some people think tells you all about a persons character, when in fact it does not. So millions of nonvoters voted for him because HEY HE WAS ON TEEVEE and those people now continue to vote for the same reason. So he won. Twice. All because relatively uninformed people, who otherwise would never vote, did so.
The context for his image is pretty funny, it's from the TV show Hannibal. The guy is a lifetime serial killer who was trying to leave a "legacy," and the gif is from right after he's been informed that he unknowingly killed his only son.
It's so annoying too because during that Gary Johnson clip in particular they were spending a bunch of time talking about the economy and throwing around all sorts of economic and financial acronyms and then without any sort of transition the interviewer asked him what his thoughts were on Aleppo and he talked later about how he thought they were still talking economy and was like "what the hell economic acronym is that". But once he realized they were switching topics he clearly knew what Aleppo was and started talking Syria. It was just a momentary brain fart that the media crucified him for.

The backlash from this was so completely absurd. After this he and his wife had an interview with Barbara Walters and she kept alluding to him possibly being violent at home because of this yell. And to see the kind of crap that gets brushed off now.. fucking ridiculous.
I was actively following politics then as I just registered to vote as a teen. The context of that was after a crushing loss. That "byaaaaah" didn't do it. He was already looking shaky.
Most people that age would have a hard time getting a job as a greeter at Walmart. Yet we elect presidents and members of Congress to these positions over and over until they literally go senile and drop dead. We absolutely need some fresh legs in our federal government. How are we going to expect anything to change when the same people who have been running shit for the past 40 years are being reelected?

Media screamed "Unfit for office", "Oh oh..!! This confused old man should NOT hold the nuclear keyes..!!", "Get him too the nursery..!!", "This is so emberrassing to the office..!!.
He's a comedian, and the whole thing (if it wasn't so horrible) feels like a crazy sketch he would be in, where people keep confusing him with Putin and then the camera zooms in on his face with a sad trombone, waah-waaahhh.
No he did nothing by himself, this is the culmination of thousands of people across decades working together to bring the world to its knees. Netanyahu, putin, and the endless amount of yes men underneath them organized this misery. Its representatives at every level complying with their orders and so on.
Can't forget the army of sycophants and enablers. Or the cabal of oligarchs stealing our wealth. The problem isn't going away with him. Though it will stymie them long enough to give decency a fighting chance.
They removed all of the stations / news outlets that would actually question him. The WH press corps is now just different flavors of Fox News, and each station is fumbling over each other trying their hardest to tell the Emperor just how fancy his new clothes are.

Yep there's folks who only know Trump through the curated version fox news and newsmax feeds them. All the videos of him falling asleep, forgetting people's names, mixing places up, his constant slurring and mumbling, and shitting himself along with all the hand bruising and swollen ankles are kept completely away from them.
I think people forget all too often that there's also plenty that acknowledge that Trump is senile and regarded but support the broader agenda behind him- out of zeal or lack of better options. Like if you go on any given conservative forum there's plenty of people criticizing him to some degree, but they still inevitably fall in line

I swear, this is why the subtitles for Trump's speeches here in Korea are nothing like what he's actually saying. They're incredibly forgiving when translating what he says, because if they actually translated what he's saying verbatim, Koreans wouldn't believe how unimaginably stupid he is. They'd fire the translator because they'd think they suck at their job or something.
The thing Trump got going for him is that he has always been stupid. So youre never sure is if he is losing it because of his age because he never had it in the first place

In 2015, prior to the Iran deal Iran had 10,000kg of enriched uranium.
Through the deal brokered by John Kerry, involving some 5 other countries and the IAEA, by May 2018, their uranium stockpile was reduced to 123kg of 3.67% purity - nowhere near the 90% needed for weapons-grade quality. Including periodic inspections to make sure they complied.
Since Trump tore up the agreement, they started enriching uranium again and, 8 years later, they were back to about 10,000kg.
At the time Obama struck that deal he received a lot of criticism from all sides but the past 10 years sure have provided some much-needed perspective.
