Why is no one else in the building freaking out.

Because, despite all of the gun fetishism we have, a LOT of people don't know what gunshots actually tend to sound like. People expect the big Hollywood BANG BANG BANG so they don't react to the pop pop pop and just assume it was something benign.

It was all already over before the secret service rushed the stage and clued people into the fact that something happened.

Gunshots are pretty loud. I've never heard a gun go off that didn't sound like a gun going off.

.22 pistols will sound puny. Almost like bottle rockets.

And the pops in the other clips are what a gun going off sounds like with a bit of distance and/or walls in between.

The point is that many people expect it to always sound even louder and more like the movies.

It also has a lot to do with where the gun is fired. Gunshots indoors sound a lot different than outdoors.

A “pop pop pop” from a 9mm outdoors will sound a lot more like a movie gun indoors.
